Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The potential economic impact of biotechnology in production agriculture is discussed. There are challenges and difficulties in completing economic research when little production information is available on biotechnologies. I argue that little impact differences exist between cost-reducing versus output-increasing technological change. Rapid technological change results in low average returns in agriculture but continuous early innovators earn higher returns. Various plant and animal technologies are presented and discussed.

The officers and Board of Directors of the Iowa Academy of Science dedicate this issue of the Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science to Jim Macmillan in recognition of his five years of exemplary leadership. During this period, Jim's managerial expertise has served the Academy well and membership has grown significantly. Under Jim's guidance the Academy has improved its financial base through sound fiscal policies, and important steps have been taken in the area of computerized record keeping and data management.

Benthic Macroinvertebrate Habitat Associations Of The Channelized Middle Missouri River, James B. Barnum, Roger W. Bachmann

Benthic macroinvertebrates associated with navigation structures (dikes, dike pools, revetted banks) and abandoned channels on the Missouri River at the Iowa-Nebraska border were sampled in June, August, and October 1983 to determine the invertebrate community structure of these habitats. Invertebrate densities were greatest in the abandoned channel habitat (to over 13,000/m²), while diversities were greatest in the dike and revetment habitats. Greater habitat diversity contributed to greater organism diversity in the dike and revetment habitats while sediment homogeneity and stability presumably contributed to greater organism densities in the abandoned channel habitat. Fry stockings of walleye Stizostedion v. vitreum into the Cedar River, Iowa began in the early 1950's, and two studies of the success of these plants gave conflicting results. The objectives of my study were to identify some genetic characteristics in three stocks of walleye and to utilize these characteristics to assess the genetic impact of fry stockings in the Cedar River. Electrophoretic analysis of malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) was completed for walleye stocks from the Mississippi and Cedar Rivers, and Big Spirit Lake, Iowa. Recompact Iowa Soil Materials Before Using As Liners For Waste Containment, G. J. Kluitenberg, R. Horton, M. L. Thompson, J. F. Mcbride

Soil materials are often used in hazardous-waste disposal facilities to provide a physical barrier to leachate movement. Both existing soils and recompacted soil materials have been used in barrier construction. Solute transport experiments and measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity were used to characterize the solute transport properties of three Iowa soil materials. Experiments were carried out by using undisturbed soil samples as well as recompacted samples. The experimental results show that recompaction greatly altered the solute transport properties of the three soil materials. It is concluded that recompaction is necessary for any of these materials to satisfy Environmental Protection Agency …

This study investigates the history and role of the native forest in an urban area of about 100 square miles, encompassing the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It examines various human influences in an attempt to determine how important each has been in preserving or destroying the natural forest.

The original forests in the study area were concentrated along the rivers and adjacent bluffs. The most serious impacts to the upland forests have been agriculture, residential and commercial development, whereas the floodplain forests have been most affected by industrial expansion, gravel mining, flood …

The purpose of this study was to examine and describe selected administrative practices and policies in the areas of staffing, recruiting, and budgeting for NCAA Division III football programs. Subproblems inherent in this study were (a) to compare these practices and policies according to the institutions size and (b) to compare these practices and policies according to the football program's winning percentage over the last 5 years.

The purpose of this study was to describe the different components of the pre-season conditioning program of men's basketball programs at selected NCAA Division I universities in the United States. The universities chosen for this study included the top 100 ranked teams in the final 1988 Dunkel computer basketball rankings. The average won-loss record of the participating universities in this study for the 1988 season was 23-10.

A questionnaire was constructed that included sections on general background information, conditioning and running components, strength conditioning components, and flexibility conditioning components. This questionnaire was used as the tool for collecting data. Of …

This study sought to discover a relationship between competitor self-efficacy and judge perceptions of competitor self-efficacy in individual events speech competition. Specifically, measures of competitor self-efficacy and measures of judge perceptions of competitor self-efficacy were compared. The subjects for the study were collegiate individual events competitors and judges. Subjects were competing and judging in the events of sales speaking, prose interpretation and informative speaking. The study hypothesized that a positive significant correlation would exist between competitor self-efficacy and judge perception of that efficacy. This study's primary focus is an empirical analysis of the Bem Sex-role Inventory (BSRI). This sex-role inventory has been heralded by many in the social sciences and has received wide acceptance. It has not, however, been without its critics. Specifically, Bem's scale has been criticized for failing to adequately protect against response tendency, for the inclusion of some of the masculine, feminine, and social desirability traits, and for claiming to measure the specific, orthogonal dimensions of masculinity and femininity. It is unclear what the relationship is between juvenile delinquency and adult criminality. Many people assume that an individual who commits several crimes as a juvenile will also commit crimes as an adult, yet most juvenile offenders do not become adult offenders. It is also unclear what role institutionalization of juvenile delinquents plays in arresting or intensifying criminal careers. Some reappear in the adult correctional system while others become lawful citizens. Historians have traditionally viewed the Westward Movement in terms of the male experience and ignored the role of women completely. Because the woman's role in the settlement of the West was often a domestic role, it has been assigned little importance. Women were, however, instrumental in the pioneering of the West, especially in the Midwest and Great Plains. History textbooks often provide little information on women. The Effects Of Storytelling Experiences On Vocabulary Skills Of Second Grade Students, Gail E. Froyen

Subjects were 40 second grade students from Lowell School, Waterloo, IA. The students met for 14 weekly forty minute sessions where they heard folktales, learned folktales to tell, and told or listened to each other tell folktales. All second grade students were tested with the ITBS Primary Battery in October 1986 (pre-test) and the subjects took the post-test in April, 1987.

The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference in standard scores at p<.05 using as pre-and post-tests ITBS Primary Test V-Vocabulary when compared using NCE's to the national norms of that test. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference at the p<.005 level. Therefore, the hypothesis was rejected

A content analysis of eighteen novels for readers in grad•• five through nine was conducted to investigate the portrayal of children's emotional reactions to their parents' divorce. Novels were limited to those published between 1981 and 1986 and recommended in Best Books for Children, Booklist's "Best Books for Young Adults" or "Notable Books for Children, or Booklist reviews prior to July 1, 1986.

The results of this study may indicate that while Iibrary professionals in Iowa view cooperation as a desirable goal, there is little formal activity between and among school and public libraries. The attendance at state sponsored workshops may have little effect on actual practice in the 18 communities which participated In the ICEMS program. There may be increased cooperative activity in those communities which made some attempts prior to the workshops. However, these activities tend to be fairly traditional and conservative. This research was based on a concern for libraries in third world countries. A study of literature about public and school libraries in two developing countries in the Middle East was conducted. Based on the evidence that certain conditions were present in the United States and Europe before library development began, this researcher isolated eight of these conditions to research whether they were in existence or growing in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

This study was done to determine the extent to which the two juvenile correctional institution libraries in Iowa met selected standards from Library Standards for Juvenile Correctional Institutions, prepared by the American Correctional Association. The hypothesis of the study was that neither of the institutions would meet 50% or more of the selected standards.
