Use Of Storytelling By Iowa Elementary Library Media Specialists, Frances E. Lachance

Seventy-five percent of 41 randomly selected Iowa public school library media specialists who answered a storytelling questionnaire in November, 1990, indicated that they used one or more storytelling activities with students in grades prekindergarten to six. Eleven of the 12 storytelling activities were used more with students in grades three or below than they were with students in grades four to six. Just 22% of the library media specialists indicated that they taught students to do storytelling, and this activity was done about equally with upper and lower elementary students.

The purpose of the present study is to determine if there are sex and age differences in the experience of mental health problems (anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse) in a working population. Previous research findings suggest that females experience more problems with anxiety and depression. Also, previous research shows that males experience more problems associated with drinking alcohol. The subjects in the present study are 244 volunteers from summer psychology classes at the University of Northern Iowa and the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel. This ethnographic study sought to identify language functions present in the dentist-child patient relationship. Specifically, the study identified language functions in the dentist's talk and determined their possible role in comforting the patient. The dentists that participated in this study were from Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Hudson, Iowa. Five dentists were randomly chosen using the Nth Skip Method. The study asked two primary research questions. The first question asked "Are dentists making use of communication skills t hat the dental literature describes as comforting?" The purpose of this study was to ascertain the occupational outcomes of bachelor's degrees earned by individuals when they are 25 years or older, here called nontraditional graduates. The subjects of the study were 212 nontraditional graduates of the University of Northern Iowa. They were randomly selected from a list of individuals who received their college degrees from 1984 to 1988 and who were 25 years old or older at the time they graduated. The purpose of this study was to compare the locus of control between those individuals who indicated they had terminated their high school athletic participation because of burnout and those who did not. It was hypothesized that athletes who dropped out of sport due to burnout would have a higher external locus of control (individuals who perceive that outside factors control their lives) as compared to those who did not. Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton

Ninety-nine species of plant-parasitic nematodes are recorded from Iowa. Twenty-seven are new state records. Most samples were collected from around maize or from prairies or woodlands. Similarity (Sorensen's index) of species was highest for the maize-prairie habitats (0.49), compared with maize-woodlands (0. 23), or prairie-woodland (0. 3 7) habitats. Nematode communities were most diverse in prairies with a Shannon-Weiner index (H') of 2.74, compared with 1.65 and 1.07 for woodlands and maize habitats, respectively. Evenness of species (J') was 0.41, 0.78, and 0.48 for maize, prairies, and woodlands, respectively.

Maize (Zea mays L.) breeders emphasize selection within F₂ populations derived from crosses of inbred lines: Studies of the inheritance of quantitative traits in maize have been conducted primarily for generically broad-based populations. Objectives of our study were to estimate the generic variability in F₂ populations developed from crosses of related and unrelated lines and to determine the effects of five generations of random intermating of plants within F₂ populations on the estimates of genetic variability. Semiquantitative Measurement Of Fission Produced Gamma Ray Radioactivity In Soils At Dubuque, Iowa, James A. Dockal, James A. Dockal Sr.

Residual fission-product radionuclide contamination (fallout) in soils at Dubuque, Iowa was evaluated with an Exploration geometrics gamma ray scintillometer in 1985 and after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Anomalous amounts of gamma ray radiation were found near where downspouts discharged storm runoff from the roof of a dwelling. The 1985 residual cesium-13 7 activity in the soils of the area was found to be 0.2 pCi/gram with an areal contamination of 16 ± nCi/m2. Activities associated with the soils near the discharge points of the downspouts ranged as high as 8 pCi/gram. This contamination seems to have occurred prior to …

Thirty sets of reciprocal isopopulations, each with 20 Fi-derived oat lines from the BC₀, BC₁, and BC₂ of all possible matings among five Awia slerilis L. accessions and two A. saliva cultivars, were evaluated in a replicated field trial to determine whether groat protein content was influenced by cytoplasmic inheritance and to study associations between protein content and agronomic traits. A. slerili cytoplasm had no direct effect on groat protein content, but significant interactions between the cytoplasms and nuclear genes from A. saliva and A. s1erilis were detected. This study focused on the development of an annotated bibliography of fiction books exploring the theme of hospitalization to be used as a tool by media specialists, teachers and adults doing reading guidance for children in grades kindergarten through six (ages five through twelve).

Information from the data gathering instrument identifying bibliographic citation, grade levels, story contents and pre-admission and in-hospital fears reflected from the thirteen books read was complied identifying those fears, their frequency rates and their location in the titles in the bibliography. A subject index alphabetically listing those hospital fears and location sites follows the annotated bibliography.

The adversarial relationship between journalists and public relations practitioners is nothing new. No matter in what era or in what context, there has always been friction between those who mind the media gates and those whose livelihoods depend upon getting information disseminated. It is inherent, it is argued here, for cultural discourse of public relations practitioners and journalists. Several studies examined the adversarial relationship, and most had consistent findings -- the two occupations view each other quite differently. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a personal plan of enrichment on library use by thirteen mildly mentally retarded adolescents, ages 14-18, These students were members of a special education class at Tripoli High School, Tripoli, Iowa. Students were interviewed at the beginning and ending of the fall semester, 1988-1989, about their attitudes toward the library media center and staff. Before the study began the students did not use the library media center during any free periods at school by their own choice. Additions To The Iowa Pteridophyte Flora - Iii, James H. Peck

To prior reports on the studies of the Iowa pteridophyre flora, five taxa (Botrychium campestre Wagner & Farrar, Botrychimn matricariifolium A. Braun, CyJtopterislragilis (L) Bernh., Cystopteris laurentiana (Weath.) Blasdell, and Lycopodium inundatum L.) are added, along with 215 new county occurrence records for 39 taxa. Currently, the Iowa preridophyte flora consists of 70 taxa, supported with 1656 county occurrence records; only 72 (4%) of these records are based solely on collections made before 1950.

To add insult to injury, many insects, including the disease vector, the mosquito, are now virtually resistant to standard chemical pesticides. Biotechnology is now providing a positive response to these dilemmas through the production and development of improved forms of microbial pest control agents: biological pesticides. Characterization Of Aminoisobutyric Acid Transport Systems In Mcf-8, A Line Of Malignant Mouse Mammary Epithelial Cells, Bruce A. Voyles

Uptake of α-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) by MCF-8, a line of malignant mouse mammary epithelial cells derived from a D2 hyperplastic nodule outgrowth, was found to be mediated by two different transport systems. In actively dividing cells about 60% of total AIB uptake is mediated by an A-like system: transport was Na+ -dependent, was inhibited by N-methyl-AIB, was maximal at pH 7.5 and ceased at pH 6. Transport by this system was reduced by nearly 65% when cell division ceased in confluent cultures, but the addition of insulin and/or calf serum to the medium of quiescent cells restored activity. A Non-Gall Forming Eurosta Solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae), W. Bryan Stoltzfus

Eurosta Jolidaginis (Fitch) can parasitize Solidago canadensis without forming a gall. This non-gall former apparently escapes most of the parasitism and predation of the gall forming fly. Levels of host-plane infestation by non-gall formers may approach the frequency of gall formation.
