Results Of The August Roadside Survey For Upland Wildlife In Iowa: 1963-1988, Willie J. Suchy, Ronald J. Munkel, James M. Kienzler

Results of the August roadside survey collected from 1963 through 1988 were examined to determine if trends could be detected in the counts of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), gray partridge (Perdix perdix), cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus), and white-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus townsendii). The counts also were compared to harvest estimates co determine if correlations exist. Statistically significant linear trends were detected statewide for pheasants, gray partridge and jackrabbits during the 1963 co 1988 period. Trends were downward for all species except gray partridge. During the late 12 years (1977 through 1988), the only significant trend detected was …

The role of mechanical injury in transmission of Flexibacter columnaris to walleye fingerlings (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) was investigated. Two groups (1 and 2) of 10 fish each, 7 to 9 cm total length, were exposed to a suspension of F lexibacter columnaris containing 3 X 105 cfu/ mL; fish in group 1 were injured with a scratch along their flank; fish in group 2 were not injured. Two control groups (3 and 4) of 5 fish each were exposed to a sterile broth; group 3 was injured with a scratch and group 4 was not. In 72 h, morbidity was …

Middle Woodland Field Camps In The Cedar Valley, Michael J. Perry

Archaeological survey and testing of two proposed road projects within the Cedar River valley resulted in the location of several prehistoric occupational sites. Ceramics recovered at three of the sites, 13LN226, 13LN236, and 13LN243, are identified as late Middle Woodland period specimens, dating to ca. A.D. 200. The three sites border Cedar River tributaries, occupying high terrace formations within the broad bottomlands of the Cedar valley. The type and distribution of artifacts suggest that 13LN236 and 13LN243 functioned as repeatedly utilized, short-term extractive and processing camps. A Study Of Sphacelotheca Occidentalis, Cause Of Kernel Smut Of Big Bluestem, Karen M. Snetselaar, Lois H. Tiffany

Sphacelotheca occidentalis causes kernel smut disease of Andropogon gerardii, a prairie grass. The smut fungus is systemic, perennial, causes severe stunting, and sporulates in florets. Spores develop in gall-like sari composed of grass and fungal cells. Spores initiate in a meristematic area near the base of the sorus, and progressively more mature spores are found toward the sorus rip. The cylindrical sari have a central columella of host vascular tissue permeated by hyphae, sporogenous hyphae and developing teliospores that surround the columella, and a peridium of host and fungal cells. Sporogenous hyphae ramify in a gelatinous matrix that disappears as …

Iowa's Climate As Projected By The Global Climate Model Of The Goddard Institute For Space Studies For A Doubling Of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide, E. S. Takle, S. Zhong

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Results of a global climate model that simulates climate under a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide (estimated to occur by the latter half of the twenty first century) have been interpolated to Iowa. Summer temperatures under such a doubling are projected to rise by 4 to 7°F (2.2 to 3.9°C) and winter temperatures by 10 to 11° (5.6 to 6.1°C). Estimates of space heating and cooling demands from these data suggest a 30 to 35% decrease in space heat demand and a 200 to 300% increase in space cooling demand. The capacity to fix atmospheric N₂ and thus reduce the use of N fertilizer is an important reason for including legumes in forage mixtures. Selection for more efficient N₂ fixation could improve red clover (Trifolium prateme L.) (RC) production and its contribution to soil fertility. An isotope dilution study was conducted in two greenhouse experiments to compare the N₂ fixation and N transfer potentials of three commercial and one experimental RC cultivars. Rocks from a buried igneous body, herein called the Otter Creek layered igneous complex, were recovered by drilling in Archean rocks in northwestern Iowa. This complex consists of layers of ultramafic and mafic cumulate rocks, including bronzitite, harzburgite, dunite, gabbro, and anorthosite. These rocks have been subjected to low-grade metamorphism with a patagenesis including serpentine, chlorite, talc, uralitic amphiboles, magnetite, albite, epidote, sericite, and minor quartz and calcite. During its intrusion, the magma which gave rise to the layered body engulfed a large block of rock consisting of banded iron formation and thin lamprophyre dikes. Both the iron formation and …

The known vascular plant flora of Guthrie County, Iowa, based on field, herbarium, and literature studies, consists of 748 taxa (species, varieties, and hybrids), 135 of which are naturalized. Species which appear on the state's list of endangered and threatened species, or are otherwise rare, are discussed.

There is an affinity of the plants of Guthrie County with those of the Ozark plateau, and with specialized habitats providing extensions of ranges for species normally found farther north or east.

Thus, I decided to compare the personality types of the University of Northern Iowa Presidential Scholars to those members of Omicron Delta Kappa, which is the highest academic honorary society on campus. Arend's Kettle is a 5 ha glacial landform in Dickinson County, Iowa. The flora of this kettle was studied over two years prior to acquisition by the Nature Conservancy in 1973. The known vascular flora of Arend's Kettle as of 1973 consisted of 299 species, representing 177 genera and 59 families. The vegetation ranged from xeric short grass prairie along the rims of the kettle to mesic prairie along the middle and lower slopes. In the bottom of the kettle, there was a marsh/seasonal pond community that varied greatly in the amount of water present, depending on rainfall within the …

The following essay will examine what type of public policy, if any, was pursued to combat the high levels of unemployment that plagued the American economy from early 1937 until the signing of the Lend Lease Act in 1941. The writer will attempt to explain why Roosevelt failed to bring unemployment to a more acceptable level during these years. The following chapters include detailed analysis of federal relief programs, the isolationist movement, fiscal and monetary policy, all vital components of public policy towards unemployment.

The study considered whether changing the physical location of paperback books on the shelf from an eye-level position to a lower position on the shelves significantly affected the selection of books as measured by the number of charges of these books by sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at the South Tama Middle School library in Toledo, Iowa. A sample representing 20 percent of the paperback collection was selected and tracked over two, nine-week sessions in alternating eye-level and foot­ level locations to determine if there was a significant effect on selection by location. This research study used a content analysis technique to analyze 25 fiction books which featured a character having a physical disability. All books were published between 1980-1990 and were at a fourth through sixth grade reading level. A comparison was made to determine if the portrayal of physically disabled characters has changed from their portrayal in books written prior to 1980.

In the books chosen for this study the physically disabled characters were typically juvenile, Caucasian, and male. Orthopedic disorders were most frequently portrayed. The majority of the physically disabled characters were portrayed in important family and societal roles, and …

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of race and socio-economic status on children's food preferences. Twenty-four obese and 43 non-obese young children (mean age 5.3 years) looked at an array of pictures of food and selected the pictures of items with which he/she would like to make a lunch. The mothers of the children were escorted into the room after the children had left the room and were instructed to modify, if they wish, their child's food selections. Technology, as a form of knowledge, can be an important explanatory variable in empirical sociological investigations. In this thesis the macrohistorical concept of technology within the discipline of sociology is traced and critiqued, with special attention given to analytical misconceptions and reifications, e.g., confusing technology with its processes, products, and social consequences. An analytical model is initially presented which attempts to facilitate a better understanding of the dialectical interrelationships between technological, social, and natural (scientific) phenomena. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences ln trait competitiveness between girls' basketball starters and non-starters at the junior high and high school level. The study was designed to test the hypotheses that high school girls' basketball players would have higher levels of competitiveness than junior high school basketball players; that there would be no difference in the trait competitiveness scores between girls' basketball starters and non-starters; and, that there would be no difference in the trait competitiveness scores of starters and non-starters at either the junior high or high school level.

Plentiful precipitation in the central United States is one of the basic components of the successful agricultural industry in the Corn Belt. A combination of moisture, wind, and topographic factors creates an ideal condition for rainfall over most of the region during the late spring and early summer. A bibliography of literature on Iowa's Loess Hills includes references containing information on the cultural or natural history of chis western Iowa landform region. The bibliography is divided into six parts: general, archaeological, botanical, geological, historical, and zoological. Annotations are included only where necessary to clarify contents. Because of their rugged topography, the Loess Hills of western Iowa have resisted large-scale conversion to agriculture. This has permitted noteworthy persistence of native prairies and woodlands, along with their associated species. This bibliography complements two special issues of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science devoted to Iowa's Loess Hills.
