This thesis presents a review and modification of Wilson and Herrnstein's integrated theory of criminality in an effort to explain serial murder and serial rape. The crimes of serial murder and serial rape are described as offenses which appear to be unprovoked and "senseless" and as well are predatory and repetitious in nature. The objective of this thesis is to further understand and explain the occurrence of these particular criminal offenses through the integration of existing theories of behavior.

A Status Survey of the Reading Habits of Starmont High School Graduates reports on the reading habits of the graduates of the classes of 1976, 1981, 1986, and 1991. The purpose of the study was to determine if Starmont is producing graduates who are self-motivated readers . The author's intent was to also gain insight into the relationship between ability, education level achieved, reading attitude and the actual reading habits of Starmont graduates. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sport participation on self-concept among mentally retarded adolescent athletes. It was also the intent of this investigation to contribute to an understanding of the relationship between self-concept and sport participation. It was hypothesized that sport participation improves self-concept among mentally retarded adolescent athletes.

Rosenberg's (1962) Self-Esteem Scale (RSE) (cited in Corcoran & Fisher, 1987) was administered to 12 mentally retarded adolescent athletes, aged 13-21. The objective of this study was to explore the possibility of using global advertising in the United States and Costa Rica. The researcher used content analysis to study words and images related to social values presented in 375 North American and 125 Costa Rican corporate advertisements during the decade 1980-1990. The social values found in these samples were classified according to the categories of the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS). Specifically, the researcher used what Rokeach called terminal values which are more socially oriented than personal values. The purpose of the present study was to examine the differences and similarities in relationship-termination adjustment between divorced and non-marital populations. The two populations have been assumed to be similar, but this assumption has not been investigated formally. The present sample consisted of 90 subjects, 34 of whom were volunteers from a local divorce support group, and 56 were volunteers from the student population at the University of Northern Iowa. The criterion for inclusion in the nonmarital group was having experienced the break up of a romantic relationship that had lasted at least one year (during one's adulthood). Subjects completed …

In 1841, with the involvement of European powers, the Ottoman Empire distinguished by Firman territory subject to a Khedive of Egypt from that subject more directly to Istanbul. With British pressure in 1906, a more formal boundary was established between Egypt and Ottoman Palestine. This study focuses on these events and on the history from 1841 to the present. The study area includes the Sinai peninsula and extends from the Suez Canal in the west to what is today southern Israel from Ashqelon on the Mediterranean to the southern shore of the Dead Sea in the east. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of consumption of carbonated beverages on maximal aerobic capacity, as measured by maximal oxygen consumption (VO2MAX), and respiratory physiology, as measured by ventilation frequency (f), ventilatory equivalent for oxygen and carbon dioxide (O2VE, co2VE), expired minute ventilation (VE), carbon dioxide output (VCO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and tidal volume (VT).

The Inventory of Negative Thoughts in Response to Pain (INTRP) and the Pain Cognition List (PCL) are two instruments recently developed to assess pain patients ' cognitions. Although both measures appear to be psychometrically sound, the reliability and validity of these measures have received inadequate attention. The norms and psychometric properties of both measures were investigated in a nonclinical college population. For each measure, items loading on the extracted factors differed somewhat for the normative samples. Five hundred and ninety-six participants working in lower level clerical positions in 21 work groups from five insurance organizations in the U.S. were administered the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS). It was hypothesized that work group size would have an effect on four dependent measures provided by the JDS, which were: general job satisfaction, social satisfaction, growth satisfaction, and Motivating Potential Score (MPS). Two separate sets of statistical tests (Pearson r correlations and one-way ANOVAs) indicated no support for the hypotheses tested. However, one separate correlation (growth satisfaction x MPS) which examined a psychometric dimension of the JDS was significant.

The intent with this qualitative study was to explore the communicative acts involved in the coming out process of male homosexuals. The participants in this study were 10, male, selfidentified homosexuals living in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The participants ranged in age from 21 to 40, and also differed in how long they had been involved in the coming out process. The participants were selected through personal encounters or referral by other individuals. Two research questions were posed. The purpose of the present study was to determine if gender differences exist in assigning blame following a sexual assault. Based on the review of the literature it was hypothesized that women would be more predisposed than men to self-blame following a sexual assault. It was also hypothesized that, overall , those who possessed low rape myth acceptance would be less likely to see the victim as blame worthy and more likely to see the perpetrator as to blame for the sexual assault. Felsic pyroclastic rock occurs in the Precambrian basement in northwestern Iowa. This rock was recovered by drilling and originally logged as rhyolite; however it is severely depleted in K₂O, Rb, Ba, Cs, and other mobile elements and is more properly called keratophyre. The volcanic unit lies atop a layered mafic/ultramafic complex and contains xenoliths of gabbro apparently derived from the layered body. These xenoliths are severely altered and are composed of secondary hydrated and carbonated minerals. The gabbros are enriched in incompatible trace elements, whose abundance patterns complement those of the keratophyre. Trace element abundance patterns for the …

Use of tritiated gibberellins ([³H] GA₁, [³H] GA₄) of high specific activity and purity has allowed the determination of GA-specific binding sites in several plant tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In cucumber hypocotyls and pea epicotyls which have been most investigated the binding of [³H] GA; occurs to soluble proteins. This binding is saturable ('n' =about 30 pmol. Mg^-1 soluble protein), of high affinity (K_D= about 70 nM), and is competed for by other GA, and derivatives in proportion to their biological activity in these …

The purpose of the study was to find out what the role perceptions of the media specialists are and if there is any significant differences held among teachers', media specialists', and administrators' perceptions of the media specialist's role in the elementary school. A sample group of eight teachers were systematically selected from each of the 24 schools in the target group along with all 24 administrators and media specialists. The participants were sent a questionnaire to obtain their perceptions of the three major roles of the library media specialist: instructional consultant, information specialist, and teacher.
