This study analyzed one part of the physical arrangement of public libraries -- the shelving of nonfiction books. The results of the study could offer practical help in one aspect of new or remodeled public library buildings, that is, would it be better to shelve the children's non-fiction books in a separate area, perhaps with the children's fiction books? Or would a better approach be to shelve all non-fiction books, whether on a second grade or college reading level, on the same shelves?

The purpose of this study was to determine if knowledge of a male or female individual's sexual orientation and HIV status was an indicator of perceived attractiveness and social acceptance by college students. A male and female actor were recruited to film short videos portraying either gay or straight and either HIV-positive or HIV-negative individuals. The eight separate videos were then observed by eight randomly selected groups of college students in human sexuality classes. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a label per se on the acceptance of persons with mental illnesses. The design was a two (Sex of Subject) by two (Sex of Vignette Character) by two (Label of Mental Illness versus Label of No Mental Illness) factorial design. Sixty male and 72 female undergraduates participated. Each subject read one of four vignettes which provided a mildly positive description of an individual who was either male or female and who either had or did not have a label of mental illness. This study explored the influence of pregnancy on evaluative ratings and recommendations of salary increase in a paper and pencil performance appraisal exercise. Research relating to the status of women in employment, the performance appraisal process, bias in employment decision making toward women and persons with disabilities, and reactions toward pregnancy was examined. It is suggested that women who experience pregnancy during employment, especially in male sex-typed fields, may be negatively evaluated and compensated, relative to women who experience non-sex-typed medical conditions. Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke

Over 200 extant fens of varying condition were documented during an extensive inventory conducted in Iowa between 1986 and 1991. Approximately half of the extant fens support endangered, threatened, special concern, or other rare plant species. Approximately 25 fens are outstanding conservation prospects with intact vegetation, high species richness, and rare species. Nearly 40% of all potential fen sites have been destroyed by cultivation or damage; another 30% remain unknown due to lack of a field visit, but most appear on aerial photographs to be very small, disturbed fragments. Charles Reuben Keyes (1871-1951) achieved recognition during his lifetime as the "founding father" of Iowa archaeology, and later assessments confirmed and reemphasized Keyes' stature as Iowa's pioneer archaeologist. The collections and documents Keyes compiled, his interpretive publications, and the records of field work he coordinated have proven more valuable to Midwest and Plains archaeology every year. This article emphasizes Keyes' involvement in the development of professionalism in American archaeology and Iowa’s position in the growth of the discipline from 1920 to 1950. Keyes' contacts with the principal archaeologists of his era ensured Iowa’s involvement in the development of survey methods …

Harold W. Beams, long time Professor of Biology at the University of Iowa, died at his home in Iowa City on January 26, 1992 after an illness of several months. Professor Bearns was born in Belle Plaine, Kansas on August 3, 1903. He received the B.A. Degree in 1925 from Wichita State University, the M.A. Degree in Zoology in 1926 from Northwestern University, and the Ph. D. Degree in Zoology in 1928 from the University of Wisconsin.

The Distribution Of Amphipods In Southeastern Minnesota And Their Relation To Water Quality And Land Use, James A. Muck, Raymond M. Newman

The distribution of the amphipods Gammarus pseudolimnaeus and Hyalella azteca was determined from 97 designated trout streams in Minnesota, along with temperature, conductivity, and nitrate levels. Streams were classified into 4 land use/geology groups. G. pseudolimnaeus was found in 11 counties and at 123 of 168 sites in 83 of the 97 streams sampled. Hyalella azteca was found in 7 counties at 26 sites m 21 streams. Spearman rank correlations showed a high degree of correlation between nitrate (range: 0-11 mg N/L), conductivity (range: 325-870 μS/cm), and geology. The relative abundance of G. pseudolimnaeus was negatively correlated with nitrate, geology …
