Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn

The effects of two vacuum packaging methods (hot and cold vacuum packaging) on the storage stability and sensory characteristics of cooked meat were compared. Ground turkey breast and leg meat patties were cooked, vacuum packaged appropriately, and stored up to 22 days. Lipid oxidation was measured by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. In addition, Total aerobic count and sensory evaluation (flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall acceptability) were conducted. There was no significant difference in aerobic plate count by packaging methods; however, panelist rating revealed that hot-packaged turkey leg meat had higher juiciness and overall acceptability scores than cold-packaged ones. Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann

Fecal samples from 34 raptors admitted for rehabilitation were examined for helminth ova. All 34 birds, representing 13 different species, passed helminth ova in their feces. Six different types of helminth ova were identified, including strigeid trematode, cestode, Capillaria, Porrocaecum, Ascaridia and spiurid nematode. From this study, it appears that helminths, particularly tapeworms, are common parasites of raptors.

Johan August Udden served on the faculty of Augustana College from 1888 until 1911. His research during that time was directed toward an understanding of the geology of areas close at hand, the region around Rock Island and nearby areas in Iowa and Illinois. Udden's most significant contributions to Iowa geology were in his treatment of 1) Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary stratigraphy; 2) subsurface geology, including information on bedrock elevations and topography; 3) characteristics and origin of the loess. Most of this information was included in the Annual Reports of the Iowa Geological Survey published between 1899 and 1903. He …

Nesting Status Of The Cooper's Hawk In Iowa: 1988-1996, David. J. Conrads

The Cooper's Hawk was once considered a common nesting species in Iowa. Organochlorine pesticides and their residues, along with habitat loss contributed to its decline throughout the Midwest after the 1940's. This species was classified as endangered in Iowa in 1984, but recent trends in nests found indicate that the population of these hawks has increased. Since April 1988, 53 nests have been discovered in Iowa. Due to the apparent population growth, this species was removed from Iowa's endangered species list in 1994.

The primary focus of this paper is the causes of divorce and their effects on elementary-age children. The adjustment problems of children of divorce in classrooms are examined. The importance of teachers' roles in easing the transition to school for children of divorce is emphasized. Teachers are assumed to be in a better position to observe the changes of children of divorce and to help them to adjust to their parents' divorce. This paper's main focus is on the peer relations of children with ADHD. Many interventions are used with children who have ADHD. One of the most widely used intervention is medication. The drug that is most associated with ADHD is methylphenidate or Ritalin. Medication, which can reduce some problematic behaviors associated with ADHD, has not been found to be very beneficial in peer relations.

It is hypothesized, due to the commonly held assumptions that older women are "asexual" and that the popular image of homosexuals is extremely negative, that the lesbian identity will go unrecognized by others outside of those to whom they have disclosed their sexual orientation. The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Pain Related Self-Statements Scale (PRSS) in a college sample. Specifically, the purpose was to replicate the two factor structure of the PRSS, evaluate the instrument's internal consistency, and examine the convergent validity of the PRSS with other measures of coping with pain. Each of the 52 matches of the World Cup-- USA 1994 soccer tournament was viewed on video tape. Time of ball possession, attempts made, and success at scoring goals were recorded. Most workers agree that soil properties vary with geomorphic position along a hillslope. This variability in soils is termed a catena. In this study, soils developed along Pinedale (20 ka BP) and Bull Lake age (140 ka BP) moraine catenas at Whiskey Basin, Wyoming are compared with soils developed along moraine catenas previously described at Willow Lake, Wyoming. Whiskey Basin is located on the northeastern slope of the Wind River Range. Willow Lake is located on the western slope of the Wind River Range. Recently, a growing number of states have enacted truth-in-sentencing policies which will ensure that certain violent offenders serve at least 85% of their sentence. These policies are designed as a general deterrent to crime by placing an offender behind bars without the chance of parole. Theoretically by increasing the incarceration rate, "the effects of incapacitation will grow because fewer offenders will be free to victimize the population at large" (Parent, Dunworth, McDonald, & Rhodes, 1997, p.l). The study was a content analysis using a checklist to record methods of HIV infection for characters, methods of HIV/ AIDS prevention presented, and whether the information presented was consistent with an HIV/ AIDS fact sheet. This fact sheet was derived from information provided by the American Red Cross.
