Fertilizer application technology has improved fertilizer use efficiency in ridge-till systems, but little work on planting methods and application timing within these systems has been done. A study was conducted to evaluate corn (Zea mays 1.) response to injected nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied to different planting methods at common application times. The performance of the late spring soil nitrate and the basal stalk nitrate tests was examined within these systems. The Species Richness Of Birds Visiting A Yard Is Influenced By The Feeders/Seeds Present, David Joseph Horn

Although seed preferences of species that visit bird feeders have been well documented, we know little about feeder/seed combinations most appropriate for attracting highest species richness or increasing abundance of individual species. I studied how the species composition of birds visiting a feeding station was influenced by addition of feeders filled with mixed seed, thistle, and suet in a yard that previously contained only a feeder with sunflower seeds. Addition of a seed mixture consisting of hulled sunflower, hulled peanuts, hulled millet, and hulled "tree" nuts in an elevated platform feeder increased species richness and total number of birds visiting …

The Vascular Flora Of Doolittle Prairie State Preserve - A Prairie Pothole Wetland Complex, Paul R. Wetzel, William R. Norris, Kevin M. Lyles

Doolittle Prairie State Preserve is a 10 ha prairie pothole wetland complex located in Story County, central Iowa. A vascular flora of Doolittle Prairie is compiled and the prominent vegetation communities and zones described based on field observations by the authors and several additional investigators from 1982 to 1997. The preserve contains 14 shallow wetlands comprised of low prairie, wet meadow, and shallow emergent plant communities, as well as a disturbed prairie community and fence rows. These communities support a diverse vascular flora of 223 native species, plus 42 non-natives, representing 59 families and 178 genera. The Asteraceae (40), Poaceae …

The Habitat And Distribution Of The Stinkpot, Sternotherus Odoratus, In Iowa, Kristi K. Sutton, James L. Christiansen

Twenty years of study have shown that the stinkpot, Sternotherus odoratus and the Illinois mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens spooneri) occur in Iowa primarily in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Even though the turtles are found within a kilometer of each other, they are never sympatric. Illinois mud turtles are most often associated with ephemeral ponds and soils of nearly pure sand (Sparta sand and Chelsea loamy fine sand), whereas stinkpots inhabit permanent water, often fed by cold springs, and are limited to sandy, loamy soils (Aquolls and Perks sandy loam). Community Composition Of Dry Prairie In Iowa And Southeast Nebraska, Thomas R. Rosburg

Results from quantitative research on the community composition of dry prairies across Iowa were consolidated from three different studies completed since 1983. Information is provided on the distribution and abundance of 204 dry prairie species. The most abundant species included little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), side-oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torrey), prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis (Gray) Gray) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Multivariate analyses were completed using two independent measures of species abundance-relative cover and community constancy. Controlled pollination in field cages is used at the United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service North Central Regional Plane Introduction Station (NCRPIS) for seed increase of several plane species. Honey bees, Apis mellifera L., have been used almost exclusively for several years. Recently we began investigating other pollinating insects for controlled pollination. 0smia cornifrons (Radoszkowski), a solitary bee imported from Japan, has been an excellent early-season pollinator. We placed domiciles of these bees in backyards of the NCRPIS staff to aid us in providing adequate numbers of bees for use in field cages the following growing season. …

An inventory of natural areas in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa was conducted (1990-1994) in response to conflicts arising when significant natural areas were encountered on lands approved for development by the City of Ames (Iowa) Planning Office. Methods for objective evaluation of woodland and prairie quality were developed for use during the inventory. The woodland method is based on four components: I) Diversity of expected species, H) Structure of canopy and understory layers, III) Fidelity of species to the habitat and IV) absence of Introduced Species. This study compared more recent research findings, 1990s to present, with the results of earlier research studies, 1970s and 1980s, to determine whether children's perceptions of older adults have changed. Factors that contribute to and inhibit children's positive perceptions of older adults were identified. Guidelines for facilitating children's positive perceptions of older adults were suggested, and conclusions were drawn from the literature. Recommendations were made for further study of children's perceptions of older adults.

This study is intended to examine further psychometric characteristics of the Reasons for Living Inventory for Adolescents (RFL-A), a self-report measure developed specifically for use with adolescents. Three separate groups were utilized in this study: a psychiatric suicidal group, a psychiatric inpatient non-suicidal group, and a non-clinical control group from a local laboratory school. Specifically, the factor structure, discriminant validity, internal consistency reliability, and convergent validity of the RFLA total and subscales were examined. Overall, results indicated that the five-factor structure that was identified by Osman et al. (1998) was replicated. Further, results showed that the measure demonstrated adequate internal …

"KBBG-FM: Communicating to Educate" is a qualitative study conducted to examine an African-American owned and operated, public, listener-supported radio station in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls community in Northeast Iowa. The researcher wanted to study how such a local radio station reaches out to its community. A review of literature revealed since the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, radio has become less and less diversified, harming community localism in radio. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behavior among Namibian adolescents.

Data were collected by using a ~edified version of the Prevention Minimum Evaluation Data Set (PMEDS) instrument. The participants were 45 twelfth graders, of which 23 were females and 22 males.

Analysis of the data included an examination of intercorrelation between sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behavior, and an investigation of gender differences among these three variables. The purpose of the present study was to examine the link between parent-child and child-peer relationships. This study tests a hypothesized model suggesting that adolescents' self-esteem, self-concept, and attribution styles mediate the association between parenting attitudes and social competence. The sample consisted of 170 students in the 6th through 9th grades (83 males, 87 females) and 113 of their parents (49 males, 64 females). Student questionnaires were administered in a school based setting and consisted of self-report and peer report measures. This study examined the correlation between aggression and ADHD symptoms across several age groups in children. Participants were elementary and secondary students recruited from grades 1st through 12th in a suburban, university-affiliated laboratory school (N = 426). The students' teachers also participated in the study. The study consisted of administering questionnaires to students and teachers. These included: (a) The Self-Report Inventory, (b) The Peer Nomination Inventory, and (c) The Teacher Report Inventory. All of these measures were designed for this study. Flow is a state of mind that has been found to occur when people become immersed in a challenging activity that matches or slightly exceeds their skill level. It has been suggested that some people may be more likely to enter this state of mind than others. The purpose of this study was to attempt to identify personality traits common to people who frequently experience flow.
