The Double Edged Sword Of Depersonalization: An Examination Of Depersonalization's Role In The Police Profession, Michael J. O'Connor

The role of depersonalization is the central focus of this study. A major issue in examining the role of depersonalization is whether the present concept of burnout is an appropriate indicator of bumout for police officers. The commonly accepted conception of burnout is a process of emotional exhaustion that leads to depersonalization, followed by a reduction in work accomplishment. Depersonalization, by this conception, is a symptom of burnout. By definition,depersonalization is the psychological distancing of emotional and psychological trauma in stressful situations—a coping technique.

This study examined the effects on performance and attitudes of three different types of influence tactics including exchange, personal appeal and inspirational appeal. The sample consisted of 78 undergraduate students from the University of Northern Iowa. The researcher conducting the study gave instructions for a paper-folding task to construct miniature paper tents. The instructions were given in a manner demonstrating one of the three influence tactics. After hearing the instructions, the participants' attitudes toward the researcher were evaluated using the Supervisory Behavior Description (as cited in Robinson, Athanasiou, & Head, 1974). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship among millennial irrationalism and the degree to which people believe they have control over the events in their lives as reflected by performance on a locus of control scale. This belief is referred to in this study as internal or external locus of control. The last ten years have brought major advances in the fields of medicine and technology, advances that have illuminated many of the dark comers of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This article seeks to pull together those illuminating advances, condensing the voluminous information available into comprehensive, but readable, pages. The causes of the disorder are discussed from both the scientific and psychological/social perspectives. The controversy resulting from medicating so many, so young is an integral part of this country's interest in ADHD, due largely to coverage by the popular media.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between childhood sexual abuse and adult revictimization. Two hypotheses were examined. It was hypothesized that childhood victims of sexual abuse were more likely to be revictimized as adults. It was also hypothesized that there would be significant differences in demographic and psychosocial correlates between victims of childhood sexual abuse and those who did not report childhood sexual abuse.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between gender, self-efficacy, anxiety, experience and the WAIS-III, short form. This study investigated the hypotheses that gender differences occur on select subtests of the WAISIII, short form, that math self-efficacy, math attitudes, and math experience affect Arithmetic scores, and that motor speed affects performance on the Digit Symbol subtest. The sample consisted of 93 undergraduate students from the University of Northern Iowa (36 males, 57 females). Adolescents need access to vital information on how to help a friend who is contemplating suicide. They need to be able to identify the signs and seek assistance from an understanding adult.

This research project, What About Me? The final question of a suicidal teen, was designed to determine whether reading an adolescent novel can educate teens about depression and suicide awareness. I wrote the adolescent novel so young adolescents would be able to relate to the main character and learn from her mistakes.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was created in 1933 in an effort to help solve the problems associated with the lack of jobs for young men, the nations dwindling natural resources, and problems associated with soil erosion. The CCC's work in Iowa was primarily in the areas of reforestation and erosion control. Company 1749 of Cresco, Iowa stands out as an example of how the CCC worked to halt erosion. As a part of their erosion-control strategy, Company 1749 built a large number of rubble and masonry dams on gullies. These dams were designed to trap sediments and prevent further …

The ability to acquire and use remotely sensed data has revolutionized large-scale ecological studies by reducing dependence on difficult and expensive field survey techniques for acquisition of land use and land cover data. Multispectral satellite imagery, typically from the Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS), Thematic Mapper (TM) and the SPOT High Resolution Visible (HRV) instruments, has proven particularly valuable in surveying and classifying vegetation cover (Frank & Thorn, 1985). Further studies have concluded that alpine vegetation communities and habitats can be mapped successfully by including the geomorphic parameters of elevation, slope, and incidence when classifying remotely sensed data.

The purpose of the study The Effect of Displays on Students' Book Selections was to investigate whether students would choose books from a display more often than when the books were shelved in regular order at the Starmont Community Schools K-8 Media Center. The thirty items selected for the display had not circulated five times during the current school year and were recommended in the 17th edition of Wilson's Children's Catalog. Parade Of Protection: A Survey Of The European Reaction To The Passage Of The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act Of 1930, Mark Milder

Major Themes in Economics

One of the most egregious errors committed during the Great Depression was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. It was the highest U.S. tariff of the century and sparked massive foreign protest. Immediate retaliation from Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Canada destabilized the Western market. It nearly collapsed when Great Britain, France and Germany reacted to the crisis. Smoot-Hawley did not cause the Great Depression, but it certainly worsened it by initiating a wave of trade barriers that severely reduced world trade. It should be a caveat for all international trade issues and persuasively shows why protectionism is a dubious policy.

Trade Liberalization And Environmental Quality: Opposing Viewpoints, Additional Issues, And The Necessity Of Intervention, John R. Ubben

Major Themes in Economics

International trade, while promoting economic growth and development, is one of many suspects contributing to excessive rates of environmental degradation. Free trade compromises environmental quality in favor of welfare improvements and economic prosperity. The difficulty of measuring environmental amenities, trade theory’s inability to address externalities and decisions overtime, and numerous market failures regarding socially optimal prices, serve as red flags requiring intervention. The most successful form of intervention is domestic policies that internalize externalities. Intervention is also necessary to balance the interests of environmentalists and free traders and to ensure that the gains from trade are devoted to environmental protection.

Demand-Side Determinants Of Wage Inequality, Corey Lorenzen

Major Themes in Economics

Since 1979, there has been an increasing gap in earnings between skilled and unskilled workers. Supply-side factors were shown to offset the demand shifts in the 1970’s, but the supply of college graduates stabilized during the 1980’s. As the wage inequality began to grow, focus turned to demand-side factors that contributed to the wage inequality. Three main factors were highlighted: changes in the industrial structure, international trade, and increased investment in technology. These factors expanded the relative demand for skilled workers, increasing the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers. Increased educational subsidies is recommended as the best policy response.

The Search For A Simple, Efficient, Less Intrusive Substitute For Our Current Income Tax System, Aaron Sauerbrei

The subject of tax reform seems to emerge as a highly debated topic of discussion every few years because our current income tax system is too complex, inefficient, and intrusive. There are two unique proposals that would change the face of our tax system, the flat tax and the national sales tax. This paper examines these proposals on the grounds of complexity, efficiency, and intrusiveness to determine which plan would be the best substitute for our current income tax system.
