The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among superstitious concepts, academic abilities, cognitive abilities, locus of control, and gender. This study explored the hypotheses that adherence to superstitious concepts is associated with a greater external locus of control and lower cognitive abilities. Consequently, little or no adherence to superstitious concepts results in an internal locus of control and higher cognitive abilities. This study also investigated hypotheses that an internal locus of control is associated with higher academic abilities, that females have higher superstitious belief than males, and that higher cumulative GP A is associated with higher …

In recent years criminal profiling has gained increasing popularity and attention as a result of media and law enforcement interest. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the field is lacking in essential empirical support. The FBI's Crime Classification Manual, used to train FBI profilers, states in its opening pages that the information provided in the manual is not empirically derived; rather it is based on the collective opinion of those with experience in law enforcement (Douglas, Burgess, & Burgess, 1992). The development of methods that estimate travel demand and predict travel behavior is among the most significant advances in urban planning. The traditional transportation model has four steps: trip generation, trip distribution, mode choice, and trip assignment. This four-step model (FSM) encompasses an evolving methodology that determines the origin and destination, method of travel, and chosen route of each traveler. Some school staff may have an incomplete understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the school library media specialist. This research project, designed for school staff to view shows the activities of school library media specialists. The project is set up in a thirteen minute video project. The research project also consists of a survey of three Iowa schools to see how the perceptions of school staff compared to what media specialists actually do in a day. The purpose of this study is to reveal the state of public speaking courses in Japan. The survey was conducted as a heuristic study for future Japanese Communication Education. Six out of 80 Japanese universities or colleges participated in this survey. The sample included two private universities, two private colleges which were classified as intensive language schools, one private college which was an intensive business school and one university or college that did not indicate what kind of school it was. The purpose of this research was to test the effectiveness of the computer program, ClassWorks Gold (CW) in improving student reading and writing scores. ClassWorks Gold is a computer program that merges parts of 150 commercially available language arts program with a built-in assessment and internal e-mail system.

Garfield Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a grant from the Iowa Department of Education for the purchase and implementation of CW as a supplement to regular language arts classroom instruction. This paper looks at the issue of leaf burning in the city of Cedar Falls, Iowa from an economic standpoint. It discusses the costs and benefits associated with leaf burning. A cost-benefit analysis was done over a 10 year period. The analysis suggests that a burning ban would be beneficial for Cedar Falls.

Flaws In The Kyoto Protocol's Pollution Permit System, Adam Mellem

The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 attempts to address the problem of global warming by establishing national greenhouse gas emissions targets and timetables. To reduce emissions, the protocol outlines a tradeable pollution permit system. The system would allow countries with high abatement costs to purchase permits from countries with low abatement costs, equalizing global marginal abatement costs. The protocol, however, is destined to fail because of the free-rider problem and the problem of trade leakage. Given the correct guidelines, a tradeable pollution permit system would provide a market-based, cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

E-Commerce: Choosing The Appropriate Tax Model, Jeffrey A. Scudder

The Internet’s economic role has increased dramatically over the past decade. Along with many benefits, e-commerce has brought with it some important policy questions. One question relates to tax policy, and whether Internet transactions should be subject to sales or use taxes. This paper examines that question, considering factors such as feasibility, efficiency, fairness (virtual v. “brick-and-mortar” retailers), and legality. The relationship between e-commerce tax policy and state and local government revenues will also be addressed. Based on these factors, the evidence suggests that taxing Internet sales would be feasible, efficient, and provide revenue for important public services.

Legal And Economic Strategies For International Intellectual Property Protection: The Case Of Software, Liz Dunshee

Intellectual property is an important asset for business and society. In 1998, the worldwide software market was estimated at $135 billion. Piracy, however, is reducing profits, innovation, investment, and tax revenues. In order to curb piracy, international intellectual property protection must be improved. This paper analyzes the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights Agreement and the World Intellectual Property Organization. It also examines other methods of intellectual property protection, including arbitration, Digital Rights Management Systems, and price discrimination. Evidence suggests that optimal protection includes a mixture of international laws, pricing strategies, and governmental intervention.

This paper reviews legal issues related to NCAA intercollegiate athletics. More specifically, the paper will discuss Title IX, discrimination against student athletes with disabilities, drug testing, and other of today's highly publicized legal issues. Legal issues of smaller athletic associations such as the National Association of lntercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) are not addressed in this paper. Rather, the focus is on NCAA institutions, particularly large member institutions at which legal issues have surfaced.

The experience of studying abroad is a period of transition for a college student. The impact of this transition on a student's life can be explored through the application of Schlossberg's transition theory to the experience, and more specifically, how the resources available affect the student while in a new culture. About 30% of clients worldwide are diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) (Bohus et al., 2000). BPD is a complex disorder and difficult to treat. Therefore, it is necessary for counselors to gain as much knowledge about treatment modalities and their effectiveness as possible. This paper attempts to define BPD by looking closely at its history.and describing the criteria for diagnosis. Depressive disorders are chronic illnesses affecting women and their families for extended periods of time. This paper summarizes research related to the effects of maternal depression on children's short and long term adjustment. Children of depressed mothers are at risk for internalizing and externalizing disorders. Genetics account for a small portion of these problems. Since depressed mothers tend to withdraw or show intrusive, hostile behaviors with their children, parent-child interaction problems account for the majority of youth adjustment problems, particularly when mothers' depression is severe, occurs during infancy, is chronic, and is paired with high family conflict or separation. Treatment for self-mutilation has also focused primarily on mentally ill and mentally retarded patients. There has been little research done on the specific topic of adolescent female self-mutilation. Self-mutilation has become increasingly prevalent among female adolescents.

Maladaptive mechanisms due to an impoverished self-esteem have often been seen as part of dual-diagnosis as well as an underlying component in most presenting problems. Since Cognitive Therapy has had excellent results in addressing and elevating most self-esteem issues, a variety of cognitive interventions were explored. However, the Cognitive Therapy framework does not always accommodate specific client needs such as an inability to verbalize due to trauma, intellectual or immaturity levels of cognition as well as cultural or language barriers. It is estimated that one out of six children will lose a parent by eighteen (Dutton, 1999). Ninety percent of junior and seniors in high school have experienced loss associated with death, forty percent the death of a friend, and twenty percent have witnessed a death (Dutton, 1999). Children and adolescents are exposed to grief, but they are not equipped to handle the grief process.
