The Relationship Between Team Payroll And Team Performance In The National Hockey League, Brandi Glasnapp

The National Hockey League (NHL) is in serious financial trouble. More than half of the 30 teams lost money during the 2002-03 season. Player salaries have increased dramatically over the last decade and payroll costs account for the majority of total operating costs. This paper analyzes how team payroll affects team performance. Linear Regression analysis is used to determine the effect of payroll on performance. A Granger Causality test is performed using payroll and performance data from the 1998-99 to 2003-04 seasons. No conclusive evidence is found that supports the common belief that payroll can be used to predict a …

Ending An Internet Auction: Is Ebay's Approach Optimal?, Andrew Behrens

Internet auctions can be ended in different ways. EBay auctions, for example, end at a predetermined time while Amazon auctions do not. The auctions at Amazon are extended by ten minutes if a bid is submitted within the last ten minutes of an auction. EBay’s hard closing rule induces bidding strategies that can produce inefficient results. Nevertheless, a hard close ending rule is more efficient than the automatic extension rule used by Amazon. EBay’s hard closing rule can be modified to resemble a Vickrey second-price auction. The modifications would make auctions on eBay more efficient.

A Look At The Inefficiencies Of The U.S. Tort System And Reforms To Correct Them, Ryan Koopmans

The two goals of tort law are to compensate victims and to deter unsafe behavior. This paper judges whether changes are needed in the current system by looking at how well it meets these goals. The current system is inefficient and ineffective. Three reforms are analyzed and suggested: contingency-fee reform, the elimination of punitive damages for corporations and large business, and the creation of a no-fault system of compensation for the worst areas of tort law. By enacting these reforms billions of dollars could be saved, while leaving the goals of tort law intact.

In the summer of 2002 President Bush made good on his campaign promise to steel workers. He enacted tariffs of up to 30% on 10 types of steel imports, claiming the U.S. steel industry was suffering from unfair trade practices by foreign firms. Were the integrated steel firms really harmed by foreign competition, or were there other reasons for the decline in the steel industry? Did President Bush have other motives when he placed tariffs on steel imports?

One reason firms engage in research and development is to lower production costs. Strong patent protection provides an additional incentive because firms may earn royalties from licensing their discoveries. This paper models the decision to engage in process research and development in a duopoly. A three stage game is posited and the equilibrium quantity and price of knowledge is calculated under various assumptions.

Understanding the differences between the male compulsive gambler and the female compulsive gambler can play an important role in the healing process of the female compulsive gambler. This manuscript describes these differences and discusses treatment methods and issues specific to the female pathological gambler including the Twelve Step program for gamblers and cognitive treatment methods. The co-occurrence of other addictions and mental health issues are also examined.

It is the purpose of this paper to review the current statistics of suicidality, known risk factors of attempting and completing suicide, crisis intervention techniques, how to carefully conduct a mental status exam, models of suicide assessment, and implications for counselors. Literature on spiritual calling, work, and family was reviewed. This literature included definitions of calling, historical roots of calling in the Christian tradition, possible relationships of calling to career and counseling theories, and writings that address the various combinations of work, family, and calling or vocation. The author concluded that the limited literature encompassing the influences of calling on both family and work suggests a need for further research on this topic.

Diagnosing elderly depression is a difficult, overlooked process. Many elderly seek out family physicians, but few visit mental healthcare professionals (Lyness et al., 1997; Sable & Dunn, 2002). When assessing elderly depression, it is important for counselors to be aware of symptoms, ensuring correct treatment.

According to Friedrich ( 1999), it is difficult for healthcare professionals, including counselors, to diagnose depression in the elderly. Although many books and articles have been written on the topic of adolescence and the challenges having to do with this developmental stage, there is an increasing need for school counselors to provide programming to empower today's adolescent girls. Research has long shown that a decline in self-esteem accompanies puberty (Dee, 1997). Attachment is a bond formed between two individuals over a period of time, dealing with how they relate to one another through their interactions (Sable, 2000). In this paper, a review of the literature is discussed regarding how the attachments between individuals are formed and the four different patterns of attachment: Secure, anxious-ambivalent, avoidant, and disorganized. Following the review, practical interventions are also provided for counseling professionals to use when working with clients who have attachment disorders.

The elderly are the fastest growing population in the United States. With this increase in population comes the need for help in improving psychological well-being and enhancine adjustment. This paper explores three factors that may benefit the adjustment process for the elderly population. These factors are religion, social support, and intergenerational programs. The need for mental health counselors in this field will continue to increase as the population continues to grow older. The prevalence of bullying is very high among elementary students, and students are affected by bullying, whether or not they are the bully, victim, or bystander. When working with bullies and victims, it is important to be aware of the different types of bullying, as well as the various forms and characteristics of bullies and victims. The school staff and community can help prevent bullying by gaining knowledge about various aspects of bullying and making the school a safe environment.

In the next few decades, the number of chronically medically ill individuals in the United States will increase dramatically. To implement necessary interventions to improve their care, the United States health care system must make changes in the approaches used for these individuals. Counselors can play a critical role in these changes. Flow cytometry (FC) is a laboratory method used to detect genetic damage induced by environmental contaminants and other stressors in animals, including amphibians. We tested FC methods on three species of ranid frogs collected from farm ponds and natural wetlands in southeastern Minnesota. We compared FC metrics for Rana clamitans between ponds with direct exposure to agricultural contaminants and reference (unexposed) ponds. Concentrations of atrazine in water from our farm ponds ranged from 0.04 to 0.55 ppb. We found that R. clamitans from exposed ponds had DNA content similar to frogs from unexposed ponds. In the present study, we extended previous research by examining both the primary appraisal and buffering functions of social support on work-school conflict. Moreover, we looked at social support from both supervisors and coworkers. We also advanced the literature by examining two previously unexamined consequences of work-school conflict. We measured job satisfaction as a psychological indicator of strain and somatic complaints as a physical indicator of strain. We viewed work-school conflict as a stressor and predicted that higher levels of it would be related to lower job satisfaction and more somatic complaints. Plant Parasitic Fungi Of Ten Tallgrass Prairies Of Iowa: Distribution And Prevalence, Lois H. Tiffany, George Knaphus

During the 1980s and 1990s, collections of fungal parasites on above ground parts of prairie plants in Iowa were made throughout the growing seasons. This report presents the fungi recorded from three groups of Iowa tallgrass prairies. The western group was composed of Dinesen, Steele and Stinson Prairie State Preserves, a Loess Hills group of collecting sites in Five Ridge and Runkel Prairie State Preserves and prairies at Waubonsie State Park. 180 species of fungi were collected on 116 hosts from these prairies. A central Iowa group of prairies associated with the Des Moines Lobe landform, Anderson, Doolittle, Kalsow and …
