The need for education reform is evident in public schools across the nation. Researchers, school officials, parents, and teachers have been looking at different ways to promote a better learning environment that will allow students to feel safe, equal, and free to express themselves in different ways within the classroom. In recent years, many of these same people have contended that implementing school uniform policies within schools is the way to create that kind of learning environment.

A Survey Of Lidar Use By Iowa Professionals, William G. Burkett

A combined quantitative and qualitative study was done to assess use and adoption of State of Iowa obtained lidar data by Iowa mapping professionals. A 47- question online survey had 106 respondents from throughout Iowa and neighboring states. Eleven follow-up interviews assessed adoption successes, challenges and attitudes toward the Iowa Lidar project. The data were analyzed using the theory of adoption of innovations as a theoretical framework. Results from the online survey indicate lidar is being adopted most quickly in the government sector, but private and academic users are readily adopting as need arises. This research seeks to evaluate the influence of advanced information processing technologies on police discretion. I have developed three propositions. First, advanced information processing technologies used in municipal law enforcement enable policing managers to easily collect and analyze large amounts of information. Second, the information acquired from these same technologies is used to create and/or modify bureaucratic rules regarding police work. Third, this combination of technological and bureaucratic processes has led to a reduction of patrol officers' discretion. The purpose of this study was to determine if students' motivation to read is influenced by the use of Accelerated Reader or SSR in their school. Fourth grade students had been selecting books to read based on Accelerated Reader levels. After reading each book the students took a quiz. SSR was implemented for two weeks to determine if students' attitudes towards reading would improve.

Work-family balance is a common term used in organizations with important implications for employees. The purpose of this research was to determine if the antecedent variable family-supportive organizational perceptions were related to four positive outcomes: engagement, intent to quit, physical health, and job tension/strain. More specifically, this research focused on determining whether or not work-family balance was the mediating variable in these four relationships. This research project sought to discover the potential role participating in a tuition reciprocity program had on affecting a state's ability to stem the impact of brain drain. In order to do this, alumni records were analyzed from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), Minnesota State University-Mankato (MSU), and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC). The purpose of this grounded theory research was to develop an understanding of administrators' expectations of the responsibilities, roles, and tasks of paraprofessionals and teacher librarians in Iowa schools where the teacher librarian travels between three or more buildings while paraprofessionals serve in the day-to-day operations of the school library. The findings from this research indicated that individuals involved in the upper echelons of administration and support for public schools possessed knowledge about and expectations for the role of school library programs, teacher librarians, and library paraprofessionals in Iowa schools. The present study sought to examine the utility of the MMPI-2-RF (Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008) in assessing psychopathic personality traits. In past studies, the Restructured Clinical scales (RC4, RC9, RC7, and RC2) have been positive predictors of psychopathic characteristics. The aim of this study is to validate and build upon the previous research by re-examining the Restructured Clinical scales (RC4, RC9, RC7, and RC2) and investigate the MMPI-2-RF fear scales (Behavioral-Restricting Fears & Multiple Specific Fears), High-Order Scale (Behavioral/Externalizing Dysfunction), Externalizing Scale (Juvenile Conduct Problems and Substance Abuse) and the Personality Psychopathology Five scales (Negative-Emotionality/Neuroticism-Revised & Introversion/Low Positive Emotionality-Revised). The Federal Bureau of Investigation releases data about crime statistics. They publish the raw data and provide factors that influence the crime rate. They provide the general public with a few variables that they deemed most influential, but do not provide the statistical analysis to support. After performing a statistical analysis, I support or disprove their claims. Competitive Balance And Team Payroll: The Case Of Major League Baseball, Tyler Veach

Major Themes in Economics

I examine the connection between Major League Baseball (MLB) team payrolls and team success. Previous studies attempted to quantify the effect that increased spending has on success. In 2000 MLB commissioned a study of competitive balance. The Blue Ribbon Panel concluded that MLB had lost its competitive balance and measures were needed to save “America’s pastime.” Since 2000 new data has become available. I have used the new data to update the Blue Ribbon Panel’s study. I show that the dominance of the high-spending teams in the 1990s did not continue, and that competitive balance exists in MLB.

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel

The current structure of the American animal agriculture industry is fraught with problems. The externalities from it are disproportionately felt by a limited group of individuals who lack political and economic influence. Far from taxing or constraining animal agriculture, The U.S. Government subsidizes its worst practices through a variety of direct and indirect methods. This paper recommends four specific reforms in agriculture policy that will level the playing field for small farmers and push the industry toward greater economic efficiency.

Can The ‘Fat Tax’ Carry Its Weight?, Carl Bakker

Obesity is a rising problem in America and is blamed for externalities such as increasing health care costs. Some have proposed taxes on “unhealthy” foods so as to internalize the externalities and to generate revenue to subsidize “healthy” foods. I examine several such proposals and conclude that taxes based on perceived externalities from the obese are not the best options. Other solutions such as increasing awareness and nutritional programs would be better.

The Motherhood Wage Penalty In America, Jennifer A. Boden

Major Themes in Economics

The difference in pay between mothers and otherwise comparable non-mothers is called the family gap. Mothers are paid less than non-mothers on average. Is it because mothers are different than non-mothers or are mothers penalized because of their decisions to have children? Previous studies have found that after controlling for demographic and human capital characteristics, mothers are paid less than non-mothers on average. This study uses 2008 American Community Survey data and finds evidence that the family gap exists in the United States.
