Voting At Home Is Associated With Lower Cortisol Than Voting At The Polls, Jayme Neiman, Karl Gieseffi, Kevin Smith, Jeffrey French, Israel Waismel-Manor, John Hibbing

Faculty Work

Previous research finds that voting is a socially stressful activity associated with increases in cortisol levels. Here we extend this research by investigating whether different voting modalities have differential effects on the stress response to voting. Results from a field experiment conducted during the 2012 presidential elections strongly suggest that traditional “at the polls” voting is more stressful, as measured by increases in cortisol levels, than voting at home by mail-in ballot or engaging in comparable non-political social activities. These findings imply that increased low-stress voting options such as mail-in ballots may increase political participation among individuals who are sensitive …

Disability, Gender, And Employment Relationships In Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Augustina Naami

Faculty Work

The exploratory quantitative study sought to develop an understanding about the relationships among disability, gender and employment in Northern Ghana. A total of 110 individuals with disabilities (20–60 years) from various disability groups participated in the study. The results indicate that many persons with disabilities are unemployed, the majority being women. Discrimination is cited as the greatest barrier to the employment of persons with disabilities, particularly women. The majority of persons with disabilities, typically women, live in poverty; given that some are unemployed and those who are employed worked mostly in marginal, seasonal and menial jobs. Ithaka University Of Northern Iowa Faculty Survey: Report Of Findings, University Of Northern Iowa

The University of Northern Iowa implementation of the Ithaka S+R Faculty Survey was launched on April 2, 2015, and was closed to new responses on April 30, 2015, with a total of 113 complete responses. The questionnaire covers topics in several key areas, including: how faculty members discover materials for research; how faculty members select research topics and collaboration within research projects; the role of the library in supporting faculty members’ needs; faculty members’ usage of scholarly communication services; faculty members’ perceptions of students’ research skills; and faculty members’ undergraduate instruction practices. Suppression Of Stereotype Threat Negatively Impacts Self-Evaluations And Interpersonal Outcomes, Zheng Li

Stereotype threat is the situation when people under the pressure of confirming a negative stereotype that applies to them. Research shows that when people try to suppress the thought of being threatened, they tend to perform even worse. This study examines the effect of suppression of stereotype threat on females’ confidence on a gender-based stereotypical task (about spatial skills and science knowledge) and cross—gender interaction outcome. Participants first completed the moon task and then had a discussion with a male confederate before evaluating the willingness of future interaction and the perception of how the confederate views them. Predictors Of Racial Prejudice: A Meta-Analysis Of The Influence Of Religion And Political Orientation, Kristin Broussard

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of religion and political orientation on racial prejudice through meta-analysis. 153 independent studies were analyzed with a random effects model using the Robumeta package in R, and moderator analyses were conducted for year of data and region of the U.S.

This qualitative study helps individuals to recognize what the United States and the state of Iowa are doing for the children coming from the countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Through interviews, the research was able to identify what other resources are still needed in helping the children capture a better life.

A literature review over the differences between suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents. This review looks into several factors and differences about why adolescents engage in the behaviors, reactions they receive when asking for help, and implications for future practice.

Children with Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) are characterized by a hypoactive, sluggish behavior pattern that does not fully fit the conceptualization of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as was previously believed. Interest in this topic has surged recently, perhaps due to the fact that many researchers now view SCT as a construct that exists outside of ADHD (Barkley, 2014). SCT is associated with unique etiology, impairment, and comorbidities. Unlike ADHD, SCT represents a more passive form of inattention that may not disrupt the classroom.
