Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease responsible for high levels of morbidity and mortality in the United States, especially among some ethnic minority populations. Diabetina tea, a commercially-available herbal blend tea, is a well known herbal remedy for high blood sugar among Hispanic American diabetics. This study will examine the effect of twice-daily unsweetened Diabetina tea consumption over an 8 week period on glucose (sugar) and lipid (fat) metabolism. Potential effects of Diabetina tea consumption on glucose metabolism will be measured by glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting glucose tests, while the potential effects of Diabetina tea consumption on …

Many, if not most, Strategic Plans are organized along library departmental lines and/or library functions, and use language with which librarians frame their efforts—not language with which patrons would necessarily resonate. In an effort to drive home the concept that it is “impact on the patron” which should be the touchstone for all we do, the UNLV Libraries Dean and Assessment Librarian have created a framework which turns the Strategic Plan document on its head, making it patron-centric. This paper examines the interfaces between Erving Goffman’s biography and theory. It rests on the premise that Goffman’s Behavior in Public Places can be profitably explored in light of Goffman’s behavior in public places, and vice versa. The tentative conclusion I have reached after examining available biographical accounts is that Goffman was a student of civility whose standards he flouted, that his demeanor was sometimes intentionally demeaning, his deference willfully deferred, and his incivility painfully obvious to those present. The argument is made that Goffman’s infringements on the interaction order were strategic, systematic, theoretically significant, and worthy of close study …

The omnipresence of consumption in advanced societies is indisputable; spaces designed to facilitate consumption (or means of consumption) are one aspect of that presence. On the surface, these spaces appear to be quite harmless dreamworlds full of possibilities, but at another level they are highly instrumental, composed of various mechanisms that work to sell commodities through the manipulation of consumer behavior. I argue that consumption spaces express a logic of movement, and a consumption logistics, that is based on the commodity form and relatable to warfare that works to domesticate consumers into the commodity system. Developing a theoretically driven causal model of state failure is necessary if scholars are committed to improving the predictive power and forecasting ability of early warning models of state failure. Building upon the work of the State Failure Project(1) and earlier statistical models of state failure(2), this study develops a causal model of state failure that is based upon a theoretical foundation that satisfies the parsimonious condition that policy forecasting models typically rely upon. This interview with Vladimir Shlapentokh, professor of sociology at the University of Michigan, East Lansing, was recorded on July 3, 2008. Dr. Shlapentokh recounts his meeting with Erving Goffman that took place in 1979 at Erving’s home in Philadelphia. Dmitri Shalin transcribed and translated into English the Russian notes taken over the phone, after which Dr. Shlapentokh made corrections to the following transcripts and gave his approval for posting the present version in the Erving Goffman Archives. Citizen participation rates in Clark County Town Advisory Boards (TABs) and Citizens Advisory Councils (CACs) were assessed. We measured citizen participation by analyzing attendance at TAB and CAC meetings over a two-month period. We designed a survey and distributed it to TAB and CAC meetings to profile volume of attendees, demographic characteristics, and other relevant data. Each member of our group also personally attended two TAB and CAC meetings to collect observations and conducted an interview with the Clark County liaison for that group. This poster highlights the Nevada Test Site Oral History Project (NTSOHP); a digitization collaboration dedicated to documenting, preserving, and disseminating the stories of persons affiliated with and impacted by forty years of U.S. Cold War nuclear weapons testing.

The project is a partnership between the UNLV University Libraries, the director of the NTSOHP, campus, and community partners to create an online, fully searchable, digital re-search collection from the collected oral history research. Project participants include scientists, miners, military officers, contractors and corporate executives. This article discusses the impact electronic books have had on collection management in academic libraries. Using the experience at University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), the authors describe how the library incorporated e-books into its print book collection. The article also discusses the impact of e-books on areas such as selection and acquisitions, as well as the role of vendors in this emerging field of collection development. Finally, the authors compare and contrast collection assessment methods for print and electronic books. The article concludes with some observations regarding what comes next for libraries and e-book collections.

The Bibliotherapy Education Project began as a teaching collaboration between faculty at Oregon State University's Libraries and School of Education. The project's evolution from 1999 to 2004 was previously described in this journal (McMillen 2005). The core of the project is a book evaluation tool, which builds counselor skill and knowledge in selection of books; since 2004, book evaluations created with the tool populate a searchable database. The accompanying Web site supports emerging counseling professionals in learning to competently use books in therapy. Assessment is a vital component of any program or initiative in terms of monitoring and strengthening its impact. Assessment involves establishing outcomes (programmatic, learning, etc.), verifying that efforts are aligned with those outcomes, assessing impact, and “closing the loop” by using what is learned to make improvements. This presentation focused on characteristics of quality assessment, such as the need for it to be valid, reliable, actionable, and efficient.
