This presentation was part of the OMB Public Listening Sessions on Federal Race and Ethnicity Standards Revision. The presentation addressed the use of racial and ethnic categories and their impact on medical subject headings managed by the National Library of Medicine.

The presentation was on behalf of the Medical Library Association (MLA) comprising more than 400 institutions and 2,500 professional health sciences and medical librarians and a joint collaboration between the Latinx Caucus and the Social Justice and Health Disparities Caucus. Online tutorials are a frequently utilized method for academic libraries to meet student and instructor needs and adapt to the growing digital learning environment. There is little guidance for creating holistically inclusive tutorials and fewer standards for avoiding deficit thinking, which decenters students’ prior knowledge and experiences and perpetuates harmful assumptions. In this session, presenters will share early findings from a mixed-methods content analysis of tutorial offerings from R1 academic libraries. Introduction: In 2012, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) was designated as a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) in the United States. As of 2019, UNLV serves approximately 26,000 undergraduate students with 31% reporting as Latino, 16% Asian, 8% Black, and 10% as multiracial. The Las Vegas metropolitan area also indicates diverse demographics with 31% of the population reporting as Latino, 11% as Black, and 10% as Asian. UNLV Special Collections and Archives (SCA) serves as an intellectual hub for the interdisciplinary study of Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada region, and the international gambling and gaming industry. This training introduced the large-scale approach to describing multi-page digital compound objects. It was developed to disambiguate and clarify the new approach of describing compound objects in Project client/ContentDm. The training focused on important metadata fields, provided practical examples and instructed student assistants and staff how to apply the new rules consistently across all collections. Perhaps the most interesting thing about UNLV Libraries' transition from passive to active diversity recruitment is that the transition has been the organic & iterative. Individual choices made by specific hiring managers & search committees were repeated and improved upon by subsequent committees & hiring managers, slowly filtering up the organization until such choices were codified by HR and administration. In our experience, anyone can participate in promoting active diversity recruitment. Such initiatives do not need to come exclusively from the top down.
