In 2018, 48,000 deaths by suicide were reported out of 1.4 million attempts in the United States. Those most at risk are Native Americans, Veterans, people living in predominantly rural areas, and LBGTQ+ Youth. Of these at-risk demographics men are 3.7% more likely to commit suicide than women. In the state of Nebraska alone suicide occurs in 12.5 per 100,000 people, keeping in line with the national average of that year. Within the last year, the number of staff reporting alarming phone calls from distressed patrons has grown. The pandemic has exacerbated mental health issues among the population, which lends …

Objectives. While terrorism studies were once castigated as atheoretical and unempirical, criminology has been well suited to apply theories of crime to terrorism and to then test those theories with rigorous methods and robust data. The present study takes stock of how criminologists have theorized about terrorism and tested those theories over time in 13 of the discipline’s leading journals. Methods. The study systematically examines theoretical framing, hypotheses, methodological approach, focus within criminology and criminal justice, and policy recommendations in terrorism-focused articles. Yearning For Popularity: How Are Popularity Goals And Self-Perceived Popularity Related To Aggression And Victimization?, Sunmi Seo, Joo Young Yang, Kristina L. Mcdonald

Many adolescents want to be popular. Popularity goals are associated with adolescents’ relational and overt aggression and aggression has been linked to greater risk for victimization. The current study sought to examine if popularity goals may be linked to victimization through associations with aggression and if self-perceived popularity and gender may moderate these relationships. Participants were 292 adolescents (60.3% girls; 44.5% seventh graders, 55.5% eighth graders; 79.5% White/Caucasian) from the Southern United States. Results indicated that relational aggression accounted for the association between popularity goals and victimization and that self-perceived popularity strengthened this indirect effect for girls but not for …

Many industries across Nebraska are experiencing workforce shortages, and the transit industry is no exception. Recently, the University of Nebraska at Omaha Center for Public Affairs Research partnered with the Nebraska Safety Center at the University of Nebraska at Kearney to conduct a survey of transit drivers across Nebraska. This work is supported by an ongoing grant both Centers have with the Nebraska Department of Transportation to enhance rural transit operations throughout Nebraska.
