As in similar schools in cities throughout the nation, Omaha's Mercy High School has been confronted with enrollment declines during the past decade, with the city expanding toward the west and as educational preferences of Omaha Catholic families change. The Board of Directors was asked to consider four alternatives for changing the basic program of Mercy High School in order to reverse this trend. The Center for Applied Urban Research was then asked to assist the Board in assessing which of the alternatives would have the greatest potential for maintaining Mercy's educational excellence.

The achievement of an optimal allocation of rural lands between agricultural and nonagricultural uses requires attention to the suitability of the land for both uses. A complete study of land use would include a cataloguing and classification of those factors or conditions that make rural land suitable for agricultural and nonagricultural uses, with special attention to differentiation between the two, and an identification and classification of the rural areas suitable for rural residential development.

This report is an account of research progress on rock glaciers of Afghanistan, Colorado, and Utah. Because of the preliminary nature of this work, some speculation is present; nevertheless, we think there is evidence for each major, new point expressed. The main thesis of our work is that rock glaciers are polygenetic and appear to be part of a continuum of similar landforms grading morphologically and, presumably, mechanically from one type to another type.

The Attraction Of Interstate Radial Freeway Corridors For New Office Sites, Murray Frost, Armin K. Ludwig

This paper discuses the impact of Interstate radial freeway corridors upon the location of new office developments in the 1970-76 period in seven United States cities. Data indicated that in each of the seven cities, greater growth occurred outside of the downtown Core than in it. Growth of the office sites compared to previous development ranged from 12% to 110% in the Cores with an average of 24%, compared to 106% to 307% for non-Core areas with an average of 207%. Evaluation is a skill which is often surrounded with an aura of mystery. As a result, many program coordinators are reluctant to undertake evaluations. Some feel they do not have the necessary and special skills. Others do not see how evaluation -- which seems to concern itself with past activity-- can work to make programs different or better in the future. In point of fact, however, evaluation is one of the administrator's most important tools for planning future operations. Sixty-two male Caucasian undergraduate Psychology students were randomly divided into four treatment groups wherein they all performed an identical task under the direction of a "supervisor." The supervisor dispensed either non-evaluative verbal feedback, Structured Praise, Considerate Praise, or a combination of Structured and Considerate Praise to subjects in treatment conditions one through four respectively. Considerate praise is characterized as aperiodic, unlinked (to the giving of a formal performance appraisal), informal (not required by the "system"), spontaneous, generally unwritten, "from the heart" type praise while structured praise is essentially just the opposite.

The formal operational stage seems to differ considerably from earlier Piagetian stages. The first three Piagetian cognitive stages seem to develop fully in all individuals, unless there is a major cultural difference or a major psychopathology (Bruner, 1966). In contrast, there is disagreement in the literature as to whether formal operational reasoning fully develops in all normal individuals. Both Dulit (1972) and Tomlinson-Keasey (1972) found evidence that some normal individuals never attain formal operational reasoning. Others however (Jackson, 1965; Lovell, 1961) agree with Piaget (Inhelder and Piaget, 1958) that the emergence of formal operational reasoning occurs invariably between 11 and …

The structure of employment by industry and occupation in the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) 1 has been changing. Trends in various industries and occupations in the Omaha SMSA do not, however, differ ·significantly from national trends. Agricultural employment is increasing in absolute numbers, but represents a declining proportion of the Omaha SMSA labor force, as is true for the nation. Similarly, employment in the manufacturing sector has become less and less important as a proportion of all employment.
