The exodus of rural populations to urban centers which dominated internal migration during the nineteenth century continued into the twentieth. American Migratory Patterns between 1970 and 1976 began to reflect a growing tendency for metropolitan counties (SMSA's)1 to suffer net migration losses and for nonmetropolitan counties to record net migration gains. The nonmetropolitan counties which had the largest net gains were those which are contiguous to an SMSA and which thus form a metropolitan fringe. A Behavioral Study Of Maternal-Infant Interaction With Focus On Infant Attachment And Infant Cognition, Bruce Mcnickle

Student Work

This study examined the interactions between 15 maternal-infant dyads using an operant learning format with special emphasis on the relationship of infant attachment to maternal behaviors, specifically the securityinsecurity dimension of infant attachment. Observations of maternal-infant interactions were made each month from infant ages 9 months to 12 months. Maternal and infant behaviors were coded and each category was scored for frequency and duration of behavior with an Esterline-Angus Event Recorder. Maternal ratios of responding and latency in responding to infant behaviors were calculated from the Esterline-Angus charts. The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of the survey data collected by the Center for Applied Urban Research concerning Nebraska women and their participation in the labor force.

The survey, conducted in November and December, 1978, involved a random telephone survey of 1,640 women between the ages of 18 and 64. The survey focused on three broad areas: 1) current labor force characteristics and other questions related to current work, 2) attitudes and perceptions related to work and working women, and 3) needs for·training and information. In recent years the administration of criminal justice in this country has become increasingly dominated by the process known as "plea bargaining." In plea bargaining a defendant waives the right to trial by pleading guilty in return for certain advantages offered by the state. The state benefits in terms of the time and money saved by avoiding a trial. The practice is so pervasive that in many jurisdictions fewer than 10 percent of the criminal defendants ever stand trial.

Higher Education

Although field study is as ancient as the apprenticeship concept, field study programs have been recreated in recent years as innovative features of many colleges and universities. These programs are as diverse as the institutions that sponsor them. Some are part of cooperative education plans whereby students alternate between a term on campus in regular classwork and a term off-campus in paid employment. Others combine working and studying in the same term. Nearly all have as a primary objective exposing students to a world or perspective beyond the traditional classroom, usually for the purpose of advancing career planning.

Murray Rothbard is a prominent spokesman for neo-Austrian economics, yet the economics profession has not taken him seriously enough to investigate his claims. He and his disciples invite this neglect by treating the Rothbardian corpus more as creed-to-be-adhered-to than as theory-to-be-tested-and-improved-on. The profession's neglect is nonetheless unwise. Even if neo-Austrian economics turns out to be unsound, it should be taken seriously because of the growing number of intelligent people who identify themselves as Austrians.

The successful delivery of human services requires rational program planning. Rational program planning, in turn, requires evaluation of 1) the needs of targeted client groups, 2) the availability of established services to the potential clients, and 3) the utilization of available services by the client population(s), The success of human service delivery systems, therefore, must incorporate the assessment of public programs in terms of the correspondence between client needs and service provision and usage.
