Helping The Community: An Untapped Resource For Troubled Children, Alec J. Allen, Martin L. Mitchell

Special Topics, General

All too often adults have cornered the market on helping. They work within voluntary organizations and church groups to meet the needs of the community. for many this service continues within their jobs as educators and social service providers. Occasionally a place is cast aside for youth to participate. The challenge becomes how to involve troubled youth in helping others to reap the benefits popularized in the phrase "It is more blessed to give than to receive." If there is strength to be derived from.giving, then let us be creative in sharing these opportunities with those who have more to …

Applications Of Developmental Theory To The Design And Conduct Of Quality Field Experience Programs: Exercises For Educators, Michele Whitman, Albert Erdynast

Service Learning, General

Much has been made in experiential learning circles of the implications of empirical findings in developmental psychology for the formulation of a theoretically convincing rationale for field experience education programs of every kind. Of particular significance has been the identification of cognitive structural stages of intellectual, moral, social and ego development through which individuals have been shown to progress--structural transformations of the individual's intra- and interpersonal capacities which closely mirror the traditionally articulated goals of higher education for students' growth. Even as such concepts have been advanced, however, practitioners have voiced persistent reservations about the theory's seeming elitism, the values …

With the demand for state and local government services increasing at a rate greater than most present tax structures can accommodate, either additional resources must be shifted from the private to the public sector, or public services must be adjusted within tax revenue expectations. The recent debates surrounding the extension of the additional one-half percent sales tax in Omaha and the continuing public pressure to minimize the burden of taxation highlight the basic problem that, at …

Businesswomen In Small Town Nebraska, Rebecca S. Fahrlander, David Sharon, Kathleen Sullivan Nov 1981

Businesswomen In Small Town Nebraska, Rebecca S. Fahrlander, David Sharon, Kathleen Sullivan

Publications

Social and economic changes during the past two decades have contributed to a substantial increase in the number of women participating in the American work force. The women's movement, for example, has increased the social acceptability of married women working outside the home and has raised single and married women's professional expectations and opportunities. From an economic perspective, inflation has probably motivated more married women to seek employment, and, at least until the past few years, the American economy has been healthy enough to provide jobs for most of them.

A total of 64 male and female infants were shown videoptaped presentations which involved changes in form and functional attributes of selected stimuli. The stimuli consisted of striped figures which could vary in form (shmoo-shaped or H-shaped) and function (side-to-side movements or up-down movements). During habituation, all infants were shown multiexemplars of a specific figure performing a single movement pattern; the figures varied only in color. During test trials, the infants were …

In 1980 however, with the 1970 base number of 66,200, the dramatic rate of gain of the previous decades simply could not be maintained. (See Table 1.) The recorded growth in the 1970's nevertheless was very significant with a gain of 19,815 or 29.9 percent, numerically larger than the 1950-1960 increase.

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "An Analysis of the Omaha Apartment Market," by Donald A. Nielsen and John P. Zipay.

The housing construction industry has always been looked on as one of the key indicators of the American economy. When the economy was soaring, the housing industry often saw favorable conditions. In the past several years, however, it has not seen the best of times. New residential starts, both locally and nationally, appear to be headed for a 1981 total that falls far below the levels of only a few years ago.

The Effect Of Mother-Infant Bonding On Maternal Attitude, Roxanne Hughes Sep 1981

The Effect Of Mother-Infant Bonding On Maternal Attitude, Roxanne Hughes

Student Work

The attachment relationship that develops between parents and their infants has been the focus of extensive research. The results suggest that parent-infant attachment can be crucial to the survival and development of the infant. Research has further shown that strong feelings of affection could be easily disturbed or altered permanently if prolonged separation between parents and their newborn occurs during the immediate postpartum period (first few hours). This study investigated whether differing amounts of early postpartum contact between mothers and their normal full term infants would be reflected in maternal attitude toward the newborn infant* documented through a questionnaire administered …

Attitude-Behavior Relationships: A Comparison Of The Fishbein-Ajzen And Bentler-Speckart Models, Arlene J. Fredericks Aug 1981

Attitude-Behavior Relationships: A Comparison Of The Fishbein-Ajzen And Bentler-Speckart Models, Arlene J. Fredericks

Student Work

This study compared the Fishbein-Ajzen (1975) model of attitude-behavior relationships with Bentler-Speckart's (1979) modifications of the model. Subjects were 236 undergraduate college students and the measures of behavior were repeated self-reports of class attendance. An analysis of linear structural relationships, using multiple indicators for each underlying construct, supported the Bentler-Speckart addition to the Fishbein- Aj zen model of prior behavior as a direct causal influence on both subsequent behavior and behavioral intentions. However, consistent with the original Fishbein-Ajzen model, a direct causal path from attitude to subsequent behavioral intentions was not found. Directions for future studies and respecification of the …

Behavioral Observation Versus Behavioral Expectation Rating Scales: Development And Psychometric Properties, Calvin C. Hoffman Aug 1981

Behavioral Observation Versus Behavioral Expectation Rating Scales: Development And Psychometric Properties, Calvin C. Hoffman

Student Work

Rating scales to assess the level of proficiency of human performance have come in a wide variety of formats. The objectives of the scales, types of questions asked, and procedures followed vary widely. Prior to 1960, most rating scales utilized what is known as the graphic format. According to Guion (1965) the rating scale was relied on in 81% of the validation studies using rating scales. While this has declined somewhat (Landy § Trumbo, 1976) performance ratings still play a major part in validation. This study will compare behavioral observation and behavioral expectation scales in terms of psychometric properties. Central …
