Self-Awareness And The Evolution Of Leaders: The Need For A Better Measure Of Self-Awareness, Greg C. Ashley, Roni Reiter-Palmon

A growing body of empirical research suggests that self-awareness is associated with successful leadership. Although self-awareness research has generated a number of scales to measure self-awareness, none have done so with the explicit focus of leadership. The present research is a summary of three studies designed to develop and begin validation for a scale to measure self-awareness in the context of leadership and leader development. The result of Study 1 and 2 was a 54-item self-awareness scale. A confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for a marginal fit. Predictive validity was assessed in Study 3 by looking for associations between self-awareness …

This special issue contains articles that examine Latino individual and community level issues in various locations around the world. The articles bridge research and theory across disciplines and include studies incorporating a variety of methodologies to examine these important areas. These articles begin to fill some of the voids where a systematic and robust corpus of knowledge is lacking. The contributions address topics ranging from issues of undergraduate coursework, literature, transnational relationships and socioeconomic examinations. Finally, each contribution provides a context in how these important transnational adaptations may play out among individuals of other races and ethnicities.

Nebraska ranks 9th nationally in the 2012 Kids Count report on child well-being.

The 23rd annual Kids Count Data Book: State trends in child well-being, released in July by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, compares and ranks the 50 states on 16 child and family well-being indicators. The 16 indicators are grouped into four dimensions: economic well-being; health; education; and family and community.

2010 Census efforts to count every person and find the characteristics of every household provide researchers with an abundance of data. One item census data accurately provide are the numbers of households that have one resident, a person living alone. Individuals living alone have become a more common living arrangement over recent decades. Especially for the elderly, living alone can create challenges that policy makers need to evaluate and potentially address.

While US-led unipolarity may still be the guiding frame for post-Cold War international economic, political, and military relations, we argue that its applicability to global science and environmental issues is waning. We begin by discussing the global problem of anthropogenic climate change, and the technologies involved in geo-engineering as one possible response. We then recognize both the abundance of oil in Alberta and the near-term melting of the Arctic as critical inputs into Canadian climate change policy. Technology can be defined as “the social, material, or cloud/cyberspace tools used to manipulate human behavior to achieve a specified objective.” In the classroom, teachers use a variety of technologies to elicit desired student response or output and ultimately to achieve a level of learning appropriate for particular students. Natural change and the net movement of persons to/from an area are factors that lead its population to change. Evaluation Of Self-Perceptions Of Creativity: Is It A Useful Criterion?, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Erika Morral, James C. Kaufman, Jonathan Bruce Santo

Self-evaluations or self-perceptions of creativity have been used in the past both as predictors of creative performance and as a criterion. Four measures utilizing self-perceptions of creativity were assessed for their usefulness as criterion measures of creativity. Analyses provided evidence of domain specificity of self-perceptions. The scales correlated with self-report measures of creativity, but not with objective measures. Self-perceptions of creativity had strong to moderate relationships with personality and creative self-efficacy. These results suggest that while self-perceptions of creativity may provide some information about creativity, researchers should be cautious when using this measure as a criterion.

“The Implications of Africa-centered Conceptions of Time and Space for Quantitative Theorizing,” looks at Eurocentric scientific conceptions of time and space, how they effect theorizing concerned with these matters, and how they are altered as one considers non- Eurocentric conceptions. For example, one might look at the assertion of circularity, holism, and continuity in contrast to linearity, disjunction, and discontinuity. The example focused on is a scholarly article focusing on constraints associated with time travel. The article deconstructs the piece as Eurocentric and re-conceptualizes it from an African-centered cultural and social perspective.

Full Metal Jacket remains embedded in the consciousness of the popular culture mainly because of its abundance of profane language, violent imagery, and salacious set pieces. The juxtaposition of profane language and imagery with sacred language and religious symbolism reveals that Kubrick’s Vietnam film has powerful religious overtones that comprise an important element of the film’s critique of homo religiosus and the modern human condition. The purpose of this study was to gain a more holistic view of the association between depression and visual functioning by examining possible mediating and moderating factors. Previous research has established a linkage between low life satisfaction and coping skills and depressive symptoms. Results of this study contribute to this literature by indicating that life satisfaction partially mediates the relationship between visual functioning and depression. Furthermore, a significant coping by visual functioning interaction was discovered, revealing that among this sample, visual impairment is associated with higher levels of depression among individuals with low coping skills; however, little effect was found …

The executive summary documents the major findings of an assessment of organizational-capacity to provide substance-abuse prevention programming conducted by the Consortium for Organizational Research and Evaluation (CORE) of the University of Nebraska at Omaha for the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition (NUIHC). The purpose of the study is to provide an analysis of local Native American community needs and attitudes and the capacity of NUIHC to provide appropriate and effective substance-abuse prevention services.

Although promising dating violence programs have emerged, little is known about their effectiveness for Mexican American youth, a vulnerable and understudied population. The purpose of this study was: (1) to offer culturally-grounded recommendations towards the development of effective Teen Dating Violence (TDV) programs and/or the modification of existing programs, and (2) to identify potential barriers to Mexican American youth’s participation in TDV programs. Using the perspectives of Mexican American youth (15 to 17 years old) and a phenomenological study design, focus groups (N = 14) were conducted that were homogeneous by gender and level of acculturation (low/bicultural/high).
