Depth Perception As A Function Of Age, Benjamin Bell M.D., Ernst Wolf Ph.D., Charles D. Bernholz

Binocular depth perception was investigated in 164 healthy Ss of the Normative Aging Study, in connection with a model of ocular aging which explains change in the dioptric media in the forties on the basis of mechanical change and later change in the retina on the basis of metabolic change. A modified Verhoeff stereopter was used. The results showed a marked diminution to make stereoptic judgments occurred in the forties decade. This is in accordance with the model. In a companion paper, retinal field shrinkage will be explored as an illustration of later metabolic age change.

At the time NCR-54 Committee was activated in 1966, the membership was charged with recommending new directions for housing research by home economists and others associated with Agricultural Experiment Stations. Basic to this charge, the committee determined to compile a list of housing research publications which had had an impact on the teaching and research responsibilities as perceived by the committee members. The compilation took the form of abstracts of research on selected aspects of housing: i.e., design and aesthetic, physical-physiological and socioeconomic, as well as influential general studies.

Reasonably accurate measurements of breeding bird populations on large land areas are needed if the overall effects of man's impact on the environment are to be measured and understood. Through use of these data, we will be able to detect the average response of these populations to generalized environmental changes caused by diverse and widespread land-use practices. As this kind of information becomes available, it will serve as the basis for developing appropriate management programs for the purpose of maintaining or increasing breeding bird populations.

This thesis will be a study in microcosm of Melvin R. Gilmore’s Nebraska research. The study analyzes his ethnobiological field work and writings in terms of biographic factors.Gilmore’s ethnobiological research manifests both bioecological and cultural ecological rationales. The thesis shows that Gilmore’s pioneering work in ethnobiology, together with studies by Harrington and others, laid the groundwork for modern cultural ecology as practiced by Julian Steward and others. The author of the thesis used original documents from the Nebraska State Historical Society in his research.

In his article J. Kirker Stephens demonstrates the possibility of simultaneous inflation and unemployment in a simple Keynesian model by relaxing the assumption of labor hornogeneity. As he correctly points out, most graphical and algebraic presentations of Keynesian models have not been used before lo illustrate this empirically important phenomenon. On the other hand, Professor Stephens does not explain how the problem has been analyzed before, albeit verbally, in the traditional Keynesian framework. The purpose of this study was to measure the spatial and temporal dimensions of drought occurrence in Nebraska. Such interpretations were facilitated by the computer generation of 468 maps showing monthly values of drought in Nebraska, from 1931 through 1969. While it was found that the frequency of consecutive drought is least in the central portion of the state, the intensity of drought is greatest in this region. Maps of correspondence which relate the areal correlation between rural population density and precipitation also indicate high positive relationships for central Nebraska. Losses among mallards (Anas platyrhynchos ) wintering on a seepage ditch below the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River at Riverdale, North Dakota, were reported on February 24, 1968. In early February, while conducting their annual winter banding operation, personnel of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department observed approximately 1.000 mallards on the ditch. Approximately 200 mallards were banded after being captured in a walk-in trap baited with corn and wheat located on the bank of the ditch.
