This concern was the basis for the Feeling Good project. The original proposal was for 26 one-hour programs to be broadcast weekly on Public Broadcasting Systems (PBS). When we were about 6 programs into the series, however, the decision was made to stop after the first 11 one-hour shows, take a two-month break to retool and return with 13 half-hour shows.

My interest is epidemiology and preventive medicine. Epidemiology is the study of disease distributions in man. Preventive medicine is the attempt to avoid acquiring the risk factors of diseases by individuals, which can be called "primary prevention." Also it is the attempt to avoid development of diseases among those who have risk factors, and that is known as secondary prevention. Quite clearly there is much concern about epidemiology as the basis for preventive medicine and about preventive medicine as a potentially cheaper and easier way to provide quality medicine. Health education is a clear dimension of preventive medicine.

This article traces the legislative history of statutes prescribing the death penalty for sodomy in 17th-century New England and in the other American colonies. New England and some middle colonies broke with English legal tradition by adopting explicitly biblical language. After the Revolution, Pennsylvania took the lead, in 1786, in dropping the death penalty.

A search of the literature revealed 27 studies of food habits of bobwhite quail in the southeastern United States. These include data from nearly 20 ,000 birds. In this publication all seed foods reported in these studies are listed and evaluated, and a key to important species is included. Over 650 seed foods are listed, and volume and frequency classes are given for each seed food as reported in each study. Only 78 foods comprised 1 percent or more of the food volume in one or more studies. The 45 most important foods are ranked for each physiographic province. The …

Critical flicker frequency (CFF) was investigated in a free swimming harp seal using behavioral techniques. The resulting CFF vs intensity curve indicates a definite rod/cone break, suggesting a duplex photoreceptor population, whose presence had not been observed in previous morphological reports.

From the very beginning, rice in the United States has been an export crop. History shows that the development of the U.S. rice industry started in about 1964, and by 1698 sufficient rice was being produced to warrant an effort to export it.

That same year a petition was drawn up in South Caroline where the rice was being produced to get the English to drop their import tariffs on colony-produced rice. Two years later about 300 tons were shipped to England.

Natural pox infection occurred in a free-living rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) in northeastern North Dakota. Gross, histological and electron microscopic findings were typical of pox infection, and characteristic lesions developed in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) but not in great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) following inoculation with case material. Death of the rough-legged hawk was attributed to starvation resulting from inability to capture prey and to blood loss from foot lesions.

The current legislative climate for American agriculture is illustrated by the House Agriculture Committee in the new Congress. The committee in the last session had 37 members and was chaired by Rep. Poage of Texas. The House Agriculture Committee today has 43 members, and is chaired by Rep. Foley of the State of Washington.

The committee was enlarged this session to make room for all of the new Congressmen who wanted to serve on it. Only a few years ago, new Congressmen had to be dragooned onto the Agriculture Committee.

A couple of weeks ago, on my Far Eastern tour, I visited a farm in Taiwan. The contrast with Montana could not have been more striking.

This was a good-sized farm by Taiwanese standards, about 10 acres. It is farmed by a father and his six sons, and provides most of the support for the 40 people in their families. The agriculture is highly intensive. They alternate rice and vegetables on their land, getting at least two crops of each per year.
