Overexposed: Issues Of Public Gender Imaging, Pamela K. Morris Sep 2005

Overexposed: Issues Of Public Gender Imaging, Pamela K. Morris

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Make no mistake—it is popularity that makes pop culture important. And it is the powerful visual imagery of advertisements that helps define the largely artificial construction we call gender. Sex-role stereotyping and gender representations are typically studied in content analyses of television and magazine advertisements. Less common are investigations into outdoor advertising, a medium that is ubiquitous and the most democratic—everyone has equal access to visuals. This essay calls attention to and offers insights on advertisements in our outdoor visual space, focusing on gender representations. Capturing and analyzing these ephemeral images can show how they influence how we feel, think, …

Managing Newsroomcan Be A Piece Of Cake, Carla Kimbrough Sep 2005

Managing Newsroomcan Be A Piece Of Cake, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

You may never desire to be a manager, but you still have to manage. Your perspective changes depending on where you sit in the organizational chart. If you're in the lower part of the organizational chart, you may think you have to manage only yourself. If you're in the middle of the chart, you know the tug of war of managing down, across and up. If you're at the top, you know the challenge of managing down.
In truth, wherever you are in the chart, managing yourself, peers and the boss is required.

Appeals Court Rules Cattle Marketing Agreements Are Not Anti-Competitive, J. David Aiken Aug 2005

Appeals Court Rules Cattle Marketing Agreements Are Not Anti-Competitive, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Traditionally cattle have been purchased for cash prices on the open market, at livestock auctions or directly from cattle producers. Cattle buyers from meatpackers negotiate with feedlot operators to purchase pens of cattle, attempting to estimate the average quality that the cattle will yield on the spot. Feedlot operators consider bids from competing packers and then decide which offer to accept. Cattle are delivered seven days from the date of the purchase.

The Land Market And 1031 Exchanges, Glenn A. Helmers Aug 2005

The Land Market And 1031 Exchanges, Glenn A. Helmers

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska agricultural land values have increased nearly 50 percent in the past decade. To many observers this increase is much greater than would be expected based on crop profitability. Increasingly it is mentioned that the Section 1031 Exchange provision of the Internal Revenue Code is an important element leading to increased land values. This provision provides for tax deferral of the capital gain tax if an exchange occurs with like-kind property. The 1031 provision was enacted in 1984 by limiting the scope of the Starker Court decision of 1979. In 1991 IRS issued regulations regarding procedures of 1031 Exchanges. Section …

Cultural Constraints In The Workplace: An Experiential Exercise Utilizing Hofstede’S Dimensions, Karen Kniep Blanton, John E. Barbuto Jr.

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This article describes an original exercise developed to apply Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. The exercise creates simulated subcultures within a multinational organization. Managers are required to function in various subcultures as they work to develop an incentive plan with salespeople. Hofstede’s dimensions are reviewed, followed by the exercise. We provide purpose, preparation requirements, instructions for facilitating and processing the exercise, student reactions, and strategies for understanding and applying the concepts. The authors also assessed content retention derived from participating in the exercise. In preliminary tests, three independent studies demonstrate significant improvements in content knowledge.

New Domestic Production Deduction, Tina N. Barrett Aug 2005

New Domestic Production Deduction, Tina N. Barrett

Cornhusker Economics

At this time last year we didn’t think we would see a new piece of tax legislation in 2004 and October brought us two of the largest bills in recent history. The second of the two was the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004. The fuel behind this bill was largely related to the Extra-Territorial Income Exclusion Act (ETI) of 2000 that had been deemed “inconsistent with international trade agreements” by the World Trade Organization. This had been a tax preference for strictly exporters, which is why the WTO had a problem. While the new law called for a three …

What Price The Moral High Ground In A Competitive Economic Environment?, Gary D. Lynne Aug 2005

What Price The Moral High Ground In A Competitive Economic Environment?, Gary D. Lynne

Cornhusker Economics

A recent book by Robert Frank (2004), a well-known researcher and writer on the nature of our economic nature, points to how the business world appears to be in the grip of “infectious greed” attributing this phrase to Alan Greenspan, the current U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman. Greenspan has also said it is “not that humans have become more greedy than in generations past,” but rather that “the avenues to express greed have grown so enormously (quoted by Frank, 2004, p. vii).” So, apparently in the minds of the business community, perhaps even in our own agribusiness and farming communities, many …

There are claims that the store has created benefits for consumers in the form of low prices, a wide assortment of products under one roof and employment opportunities and that communities have also benefited from Wal-Mart in the form of its involvement in charity and infrastructure.

Despite its market …

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey Aug 2005

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Complex systems, such as urban systems, emerge unpredictably without the influence of central control as a result of adaptive behavior by their component, interacting agents. This paper analyses city size distributions, by decade, from the south-western region of the United States for the years 1890–1990. It determines if the distributions were clustered and documents changes in the pattern of clusters over time. Clusters were determined utilizing a kernel density estimator and cluster analysis. The data were clustered as determined by both methods. The analyses identified 4–7 clusters of cities in each of the decades analysed. Cities cluster into size classes, …

Potential Of Restored Prairie Wetlands In The Glaciated North American Prairie To Sequester Atmospheric Carbon, Robert A. Gleason, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Rhonda L. Mcdougal, Kevin E. Kermes, Edward N. Steadman, John A. Harju

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) covers about 900,000 km2 (347,500 mi2), which is approximately a fourth of the area in the Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership region. Specifically, the PPR covers portions of Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota in the United States and Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in Canada. Formed largely by glacial events, this region historically was dominated by grasslands interspersed with shallow palustrine wetlands.
Prior to European settlement, this region may have supported more than 20 million ha (49 million acres) of wetlands, making it the largest wetland complex in North America. …

“I Just Want To Play”: Women, Sexism, And Persistence In Golf, Lee Mcginnis, Julia Mcquillan, Constance L. Chapple Aug 2005

“I Just Want To Play”: Women, Sexism, And Persistence In Golf, Lee Mcginnis, Julia Mcquillan, Constance L. Chapple

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Golf does not inherently privilege men or women physically, yet men are much more likely to participate in golf. The authors explore the institutional (e.g., societal level) and interactional barriers to women’s golf participation and uncover strategies women use to negotiate playing and persisting in golf. Guided by research on tokenism in occupations, statistical discrimination, and feminist research in the sociology of sport, the authors use 10 interviews with recreational women golfers to explore these issues. Similar to women in predominantly male occupations, the women in this study report heightened visibility and experiences with typecasting on the golf course. In …

Are Advanced Degrees Worth The Time And Effort?, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

We’ve read it all before. The more you learn, the more you earn.
High school graduates earn more than those who drop out of school. College grads have higher salaries than those who have only a high school education. Those with graduate degrees often out earn those with a bachelor's degree. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule.
The question of graduate degrees often comes up in our industry. When I've spoken with journalists who are pondering graduate .school, I ask about their motivation. What do you want the outcome to be? What do you think a graduate degree …

Effects Of Parental Rejection And Relationship Quality On Depression Among Older Rural Adults, Jim P. Stimpson, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt Aug 2005

Effects Of Parental Rejection And Relationship Quality On Depression Among Older Rural Adults, Jim P. Stimpson, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Research suggests that families have development histories which influence their responses to situations across the life course. The present study examined the effects of family relationship histories on intergenerational affection and conflict between adult children and their parents and how this affects parents’ depressive symptoms. Path analysis based on matched reports of adult children and their parents revealed that parental behavior early in life affects contemporary relationships between family members, which ultimately impacts parents’ depressive symptoms. Parental rejection is negatively associated with intergenerational affection, which in turn is negatively associated with depressive symptoms.

Basis Risk Reduction With Lrp Insurance, Rik R. Smith, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

Livestock Risk Protection Insurance (LRP) is a pilot program from the USDA-Risk Management Agency (RMA) that provides minimum price protection for fed cattle, feeder cattle and swine producers. The program works like a put option in that a minimum price is established, but if prices increase producers can benefit from the increase. Producers pay a premium in exchange for this price insurance, which is available from licensed crop insurance agents.

The Effect Of Cooperatives On Innovation, Konstantinos Giannakas Jul 2005

The Effect Of Cooperatives On Innovation, Konstantinos Giannakas

Cornhusker Economics

Innovation activity is a critical element of business conduct affecting the competitiveness of firms, the arrival rate of innovations in the economy, productivity growth and social welfare. The strategic interactions among firms and their effect on innovation have received considerable attention in the economic literature with the main focus being on innovation competition in a pure oligopoly – i.e., a market in which a small number of profit-maximizing, investorowned firms (IOFs) operate.

Dry Beans As A Farm Program Commodity: Is This A Good Idea?, Paul Burgener

Cornhusker Economics

With the inclusion of soybeans in the direct payment program and chickpeas, dry peas and lentils in the marketing loan program under the 2002 Farm Act, the question of whether or not to push for inclusion of dry beans in the 2007 legislation has been posed. There are a number of factors that need to be considered before making a major lobbying effort to get dry beans included in the 2007 Farm Bill. The key points will be discussed here.
