Substance Abuse Disorders Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Kurt D. Johnson, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt
Substance Abuse Disorders Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Kurt D. Johnson, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper presents lifetime and 12-month prevalence rates and comorbidity data for substance abuse disorders among homeless and runaway adolescents. Data are from baseline interviews of a longitudinal diagnostic study of 428 (187 males and 241 females) homeless and runaway adolescents aged 16 to 19 years (mean age = 17.4 years, SD = 1.05). The data were collected by full-time interviewers on the streets and in shelters in eight Midwestern cities of various populations. About two thirds (60.5%) of the runaways met lifetime criteria for at least one of three substance disorders (alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, drug abuse), and nearly …
Children’S Play In Cross-Cultural Perspective: A New Look At The Six Cultures Study , Carolyn P. Edwards
Children’S Play In Cross-Cultural Perspective: A New Look At The Six Cultures Study , Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
A qualitative and quantitative reanalysis of the Six Cultures data on children’s play, collected in the 1950s, was performed to revisit worlds of childhood during a time when sample communities were more isolated from mass markets and media than they are today. A count was performed of children aged 3 to 10 in each community sample scored as engaging in creative-constructive play, fantasy play, role play, and games with rules. Children from Nyansongo and Khalapur scored lowest overall, those from Tarong and Juxtlahuaca scored intermediate, and those from Taira and Orchard Town scored highest. Cultural norms and opportunities determined how …

Does Choice Of Estimators Influence Conclusions From True Metabolizable Energy Feeding Trials?, Mark H. Sherfy, Roy L. Kirkpatrick, Kenneth E. Webb Jr.
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
True metabolizable energy (TME) is a measure of avian dietary quality that accounts for metabolic fecal and endogenous urinary energy losses (EL) of non-dietary origin. The TME is calculated using a bird fed the test diet and an estimate of EL derived from another bird (Paired Bird Correction), the same bird (Self Correction), or several other birds (Group Mean Correction). We evaluated precision of these estimators by using each to calculate TME of three seed diets in blue-winged teal (Anas discors). The TME varied by <2% among estimators for all three diets, and Self Correction produced the least variable TMEs for each. The TME did not differ between estimators in nine paired comparisons within diets, but variation between estimators within individual birds was sufficient to be of practical consequence. Although differences in precision among methods were slight, Self Correction required the lowest sample size to achieve a given precision. Feeding trial methods that minimize variation among individuals have several desirable properties, including higher precision of TME estimates and more rigorous experimental control. Consequently, we believe that Self Correction is most likely to accurately represent nutritional value of food items and should be considered the standard method for TME feeding trials.

Multi-Party Mobilization For Adolescent Literacy In A Rural Area: A Case Study Of Policy Development And Collaboration, Edmund T. Hamann, Julie Meltzer
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Between 2001 and 2005, the state of Maine shifted the focus of its statewide high school improvement efforts to include an explicit focus on adolescent literacy. One trigger for that change in focus was a 5-school adolescent literacy initiative previously launched in a rural county under the federal Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory contract. This monograph describes the multi-party mobilization that led to the creation and implementation of the adolescent literacy project and explains the link between the modest rural effort and the change in state-level reform efforts.
Review Of Amphibians And Reptiles Of Montana By J. Kirwin Werner, Bryce A. Maxell, Paul Hendricks, And Dennis L. Flath, Anthony Russell
Review Of Amphibians And Reptiles Of Montana By J. Kirwin Werner, Bryce A. Maxell, Paul Hendricks, And Dennis L. Flath, Anthony Russell
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This volume documents comprehensively Montana's herpetofauna in a field guide/natural history format. As such, it joins other relatively recently published guides to the herpetofaunas of the northern Great Plains states and provinces that border Montana to provide extensive background information about amphibians and reptiles across this broad region. Assembled by a consortium of authors with a wealth of first-hand experience, the guide is profusely illustrated with color photographs of habitats and animals in the field, almost all of good to excellent quality, though a few are too small or indistinct to illustrate clearly the features being considered. For the most …
Review Of Damselflies Of Alberta: Flying Neon Toothpicks In The Grass By John Acorn, Dennis Lehmkuhl
Review Of Damselflies Of Alberta: Flying Neon Toothpicks In The Grass By John Acorn, Dennis Lehmkuhl
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This book is small enough to fit into a field pack or be rolled up and put in your pocket, but don't be misled by the size: it contains many compelling topics in addition to identification and species accounts. Of special interest is the chapter on the history of damselfly study in Alberta. Settlement of many areas of the Canadian and American Plains occurred about a hundred years ago, and the pattern was similar in many places-avid amateurs or professional biologists began the study of local faunas, and the stories of their personal lives and experiences in those pioneer years …
Review Of Weeds Of The Great Plains By James Stubbendieck, Mitchell 1. Coffin, And L. M. Landholt, Craig Freeman
Review Of Weeds Of The Great Plains By James Stubbendieck, Mitchell 1. Coffin, And L. M. Landholt, Craig Freeman
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Alteration of the Great Plains landscape during the past two centuries has permitted scores of weedy plants to flourish and expand their ranges, often profoundly affecting the ecology and economy of the region. As their numbers have increased, weed identification has become progressively more challenging. More than 600 of the 3,600 species of flowering plants and ferns documented in the Great Plains were not here 200 years ago. This book, updating and replacing Weeds of Nebraska and the Great Plains (1994), intends to enable users to "identify or confirm the identity of the most important weeds in the Great Plains."
Review Of Brush Management: Past, Present, Future Edited By Wayne T. Hamilton, Allan Mcginty, Darrell N. Ueckert, C. Wayne Hanselka, And Michelle R. Lee, Susan Tunnell
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Focused on the brush problem in Texas, this book contains sections on mechanical, chemical, biological, and prescribed fire as methods of brush management, with an additional section on brush management issues. The chapters on management practices address the historical perspective, current practices, and their future use. This approach provides more than a snapshot of current research and helps readers understand the progression of management practices.
Review Of Every Farm A Factory: The Industrial Ideal In American Agriculture By Deborah Fitzgerald, Kimberly Porter
Review Of Every Farm A Factory: The Industrial Ideal In American Agriculture By Deborah Fitzgerald, Kimberly Porter
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In many ways Deborah Fitzgerald's Every Farm a Factory is a familiar story. Students of early twentieth-century American agriculture will find recognizable contours: mechanization, standardization, economies of scale, depopulation, professionalization, and a developing managerial mind-set. What makes Fitzgerald's work an invigorating contribution to the history of rural America is her framework. The new "opportunities and constraints" confronting farmers and their families in the 1920s, she argues, were not an accidental convergence.
Review Of On The Great Plains: Agriculture And Environment By Geoff Cunfer, Gary Libecap
Review Of On The Great Plains: Agriculture And Environment By Geoff Cunfer, Gary Libecap
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Geoff Cunfer has written an important book about the interaction between humans and nature in the Great Plains between 1870 and the end of the twentieth century. It will be useful to those involved in environmental and ecological science, agriculture and agricultural history, as well as economic history and economic development. One of the largest agricultural landscapes in the U.S., the Great Plains was at one time thought of as "the Great American Desert," and the Northern Great Plains was the last region to be settled on the agricultural frontier. Interpretation of Great Plains history is split between two camps. …
Review Of Perilous Voyages: Czech And English Immigrants To Texas In The 1870s By Lawrence H. Konecny And Clinton Machann, Eva Eckert
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Perilous Voyages exemplifies the fact that one can learn much about immigration by focusing on specific journeys. As Konecny and Machann show, this focus enables readers to view immigration as a set of complex decisions of troubled individuals rather than as a movement of masses. The authors have unearthed critical historical materials that shed new light on Texas immigration. The book communicates not only valuable facts but also excitement over discovering previously unpublished materials of narrative interest and historical power: Texas travel adventure in the diary of William Wright (April-May 1879), oral history about the voyage of thirty-six Moravians (1873), …
Language Skills Of Elementary-Aged Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Gregory Benner
Language Skills Of Elementary-Aged Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Gregory Benner
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
A cross-sectional design was used to assess the language skills and prevalence of language disorders among 84 randomly selected public school children (K-5) receiving special education services for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The mean receptive language standard score fell in the nonclinical range, whereas the mean total and expressive standard scores fell in the clinical range. The prevalence rates of total, expressive, and receptive disorders among children with EBD were 54%, 55%, and 42%, respectively. Approximately two-thirds of children experienced a language disorder (i.e., total, expressive, and/or receptive). Half of those experiencing a language disorder met clinical criteria in …
Breeding Bird Communities In Riparian Forests Along The Central Platte River, Nebraska, Craig Davis
Breeding Bird Communities In Riparian Forests Along The Central Platte River, Nebraska, Craig Davis
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Platte River has changed from a nearly treeless prairie river to a heavily forested river. These habitat changes have likely benefited many woodland birds, but have harmed other migratory birds such as cranes. In response to this impact on migratory birds, conservation groups implemented a tree-clearing program to enhance habitat for these species. This practice is not without controversy because of concerns about its effect on woodland birds. The goal of this study was to determine the composition and abundance of breeding birds that use these forests and discuss the potential impacts of tree clearing on woodland birds. Surveys …

Assessing The Economic Development Of Nature Tourism, Nancy Hodur, F. Larry Leistritz, Kara Wolfe
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Nature tourism is increasingly being considered as an economic development opportunity for rural areas of the Great Plains. As rural communities seek to develop nature tourism, questions regarding the attributes and interests of the nature tourist arise. This study sought to address these questions through a survey of participants at a birding festival held in central North Dakota in June 2004. The festival participants were predominately from outside the local area, and most of these visitors were from out of state. The festival participants were middle-aged and highly educated, and had relatively high income. The visitors spent an average of …

Review Of The Prehistory Of Texas Edited By Timothy K. Perttula, James Bruseth
Review Of The Prehistory Of Texas Edited By Timothy K. Perttula, James Bruseth
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Prehistory of Texas is an attempt to synthesize work on the prehistoric archaeology of the Southern Great Plains and surrounding areas of Texas. Sixteen archeologists contributed to the book, which is divided into six parts. The first chapter of part one provides the necessary cultural-historical and environmental background for the chapters that follow. The second chapter is a long, in-depth, well-researched treatment of the Paleoindian presence in Texas.

Women In Agriculture: Making The Critical Difference, Meg Klosterman Kester
Cornhusker Economics
In 2002 the Census of Agriculture reported the total number of farm operators was 70,668. Nearly 16,000 of those operators were women, representing 22.5 percent of all operators. Over 3,000 women were designated as principal operators, representing over 6 percent of Nebraska’s 49,355 farms. Because women play a significant role in farm operation in the state, the Women in Agriculture program has grown and flourished over the past 21 years.

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The mammalogy program at Texas Tech University officially was established in 1962, when Robert L. Packard joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences. As the institution's first mammalogist, Packard took the initiative to develop a strong program of mammalian research and education. Influenced by the successful program built by his mentor, E. Raymond Hall, at the University of Kansas, Packard modeled similar goals for Texas Tech University. Those goals included a strong emphasis on both undergraduate and graduate education and research, with several mammalogy faculty members, and the establishment and growth of a large and active mammal collection.
Cull Cow Marketing, Dillon Feuz
Cull Cow Marketing, Dillon Feuz
Cornhusker Economics
Every year, about this time of year it seems that someone asks me to speak about cull cow marketing. The date they want me to speak is generally the week before Thanksgiving. The problem with that talk then, is I am always a couple of months late with my advice. So I am getting my advice out early, or perhaps I should say on time, this year. Cull cow sales likely account for 20-25 percent of gross revenue on most cow-calf ranches. It is therefore worth considering different cull cow marketing strategies.
Rural Depopulation: A Closer Look At Nebraska’S Counties And Communities, Randolph L. Cantrell
Rural Depopulation: A Closer Look At Nebraska’S Counties And Communities, Randolph L. Cantrell
Rural Initiative Program: Publications and Reports
There is no question about it; rural population loss and Metropolitan concentration continue to be important factors in shaping social and economic conditions in much of America’s Great Plains region. Despite widespread population increases throughout much of nonmetropolitan America during the 1990s, the rural Great Plains has remained an area of persistent decline (Johnson and Beale, 1998 and 2001). Declining populations have characterized many Great Plains counties since the early 1900s, and the trend has continued with few exceptions through the most recent census in 2000. In fact, for some Great Plains counties, the rate of population decline has actually …

Retail Patterns Across Nebraska, A 10-Year Perspective, Aaron C. Raymond, Bruce B. Johnson
Cornhusker Economics
Retail activity is very dynamic and highly variable, across both time and space. We have been following total retail activity, using taxable retail sales from the Nebraska Department of Revenue as a proxy for many years. Over time, we have witnessed the continuing trend towards increasing concentration of retail activity in the larger trade centers and urban communities, and away from rural and small trade centers. While state sales tax data provides some clear perspectives on overall changes and trends, even down to town and county levels, details as to the specific type of retail activity is precluded.

Brazil And Its Role In Global Agriculture, H. Douglas Jose
Cornhusker Economics
The themes which have been applied to Brazilian agriculture include “a growing agricultural giant,” and “the future of modern agriculture.” I had the opportunity to visit Brazil and observe some of their agriculture first hand in August. There is always a danger of making general observations based on limited time in a country and a limited area covered. But this two-week visit left me with some observations to consider as we think about the structure of global agriculture in the future.

The current set of studies compared the psychometric properties of the original Comprehensive Effects of Alcohol Questionnaire (CEOA) to a 15-item version (B-CEOA) in a nonclinical undergraduate sample (N = 581), and attempted to replicate and extend the B-CEOA findings in an undergraduate sample referred to an alcohol intervention (N = 734). Psychometric assessment included construct validity, internal consistency, and concurrent validity, using both “positive” and “negative” expectancy items in all analyses. Results provided further support for the empirical validity of the original CEOA, and provided support for the use of the B-CEOA despite the reduction in the …

Prosocial Behaviors In Context: A Study Of The Gikuyu Children Of Ngecha, Kenya, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Carolyn P. Edwards, Gustavo Carlo
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
This study examines children’s prosocial behaviors in everyday contexts that represent varying degrees of strength of situational demands. Behavioral observations of children (N = 89) ages 2 to 10 years (M = 5.25, SD = 2.23)., collected in Ngecha, Kenya were coded for 3 types of prosocial behaviors (nurturant, responsible and prosocial dominant) and the contexts in which these behaviors emerged (childcare, self care, labor/chores, play, idle/ social). Mixed factorial ANOVAs showed age differences in prosocial behaviors favoring older children as well as context effects. Prosocial behaviors occurred more frequently than in labor/chores than in play, idle/social or self-care contexts; …
