Assessment Of Clinical Partner Violence Screening Tools, Ann L. Coker, Brian O. Pope, Paige H. Smith, Maureen Sanderson, James R. Hussey
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Objective: to compare the Women’s Experience with Battering Scale (WEB) with the Index of Spouse Abuse-Physical Scale (ISA-P) as screening tools to identify intimate partner violence (IPV).
Methods: We conducted a large cross-sectional survey of women age 18 to 65 attending one of two family practice clinics from 1997 to 1998. All women completed both the WEB and the ISA-P and a telephone interview. We figured agreement estimates between the two tools, used stratified analyses to evaluate attributes of those more likely to screen as battered or physically assaulted, and compared associations between the WEB and ISA-P and a range …
Bone Cutting, Placement, And Cannibalism? Middle Preceramic Mortuary Patterns Of Nanchoc, Northern Peru, Jack Rossen, Tom D. Dillehay
Bone Cutting, Placement, And Cannibalism? Middle Preceramic Mortuary Patterns Of Nanchoc, Northern Peru, Jack Rossen, Tom D. Dillehay
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Mortuary practices of the Middle Preceramic period (ca. 8500-4000 B.P.) are discussed for the Nanchoc region of the upper Zaña Valley, northern Peru. Careful breaking, cutting, and placement of human bones from adult males during the Las Pircas Phase (8500-6000 B.P. ) gave way to more haphazard breakage and discard during the subsequent Tierra Blanca Phase (6000-5000 B.P.). The evidence of cannibalism is considered. Bone breakage, cutting, and possibly cannibalism is believed to have been part of a broader process of ritualization that mitigated the spiritual danger of the transition from hunting-gathering to horticulture.
Este trabajo discute las prácticas mortuorias …

Hierarchical Data And The Derivational Relationship Between Words, Andrew R. Hippisley, Mariam Tariq, David Chang
Hierarchical Data And The Derivational Relationship Between Words, Andrew R. Hippisley, Mariam Tariq, David Chang
Linguistics Faculty Publications
Databases that are currently being developed for repositories of digital linguistic information typically fall into the strictly relational category. We present work on an object-relational database which allows for the representation of hierarchical relationships. This has particular benefits for the storage and access of morphological data in the system of word formation. A model that makes use of inheritance hierarchies elegantly captures the relationship between a root, its derivative, and its derivative, and so on. We report on the experimental Node DataBlade, a software bundle that extends the functionality of the object-relational database system Informix (Brown 2001) by supporting the …

Suppletion, Frequency And Lexical Storage., Andrew R. Hippisley
Suppletion, Frequency And Lexical Storage., Andrew R. Hippisley
Linguistics Faculty Publications
Suppletion impacts on theories of the lexicon, language change and language acquisition, and for this reason “is of considerable interest” (Mel’čuk 2000: 511). An observation often made is that there exists a relationship between suppletion and frequency (c.f. Bybee 1995, Greenberg 1996). A lexeme where there is a suppletive relationship between its word-forms usually falls within the group of higher frequency items. Because the relation is with high frequency, suppletion sheds light on the mental lexicon. High frequency words correlate with quick processing speeds, for example lexical decision times, suggesting a memory effect: the more frequently an item is accessed, …
Basic Blue In East Slavonic, Andrew R. Hippisley
Basic Blue In East Slavonic, Andrew R. Hippisley
Linguistics Faculty Publications
Russian’s second BLUE term goluboj ‘light blue’ constitutes a well-known exception to the Berlin and Kay basic color-term typology. If other Slavonic languages do not have a second BLUE term, then the special position of Russian requires explanation; if there is evidence pointing to two basic terms for BLUE, we have a second set of data for investigating the evolution of this unusual color system. The languages genetically closest to Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian, are examined. Findings of the list task, a simple and elegant test for psychological salience of color terms, provide strong evidence that Ukrainian and Belarusian have …

A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan
A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Recruitment into peripheral possession trance cults has been explained as attempts to compensate for socio-economic deprivation and jural impotence. This model, best developed by I.M. Lewis, is reviewed and its predictions tested against two types of Brazilian data. Firstly, national census figures of religious affiliation are compared with measure of socio-economic stress for a diachronic analysis. A second, synchronic analysis involves 62 respondents in Rio de Janeiro who completed questionnaires on socio-economic status, cultic affiliation, and perceptions of stress and gender inequality. The results offer only weak support for Lewis's original model, which may therefore profit from supplementation from other …
