The present study takes a developmental approach to subgrouping and examines the trajectories of substance use from early adolescence through young adulthood among a community sample of 481 individuals. The patterns of use were examined, subgroups were identified separately for men and women and for alcohol and marijuana, and psychosocial predictors and psychopathology outcomes that differentiated the groups were identified. The results revealed three substantially overlapping subgroups for both alcohol and marijuana: early onset, late onset, and nonuser. Although the general patterns of which dependent variables were related to group were similar for alcohol and marijuana, a closer examination revealed …
Regulation Of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: An Application Of Economic Theory To Firm Decision Making And Applications For Public Policy, Benjamin Gramig
Regulation Of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: An Application Of Economic Theory To Firm Decision Making And Applications For Public Policy, Benjamin Gramig
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The livestock industry in the United States has experienced significant concentration and vertical integration in recent years. This change has resulted in greater observed levels of pollution attributed to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) and society has attempted to use regulation to remedy these problems. Despite regulation at the federal and local level no documented improvement in water quality has been observed to date. This thesis is concerned with the response of profit-maximizing economic agents to the form of environmental regulation adopted at the federal level. A theoretical model of firm profit is proposed and analyzed using comparative statics to …
Contracting With Nonprofit Organizations: A Model For Local Governments, Renee Jackson
Contracting With Nonprofit Organizations: A Model For Local Governments, Renee Jackson
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
A number of factors have contributed to the rise in nonprofit organizations during the last three decades. No matter the reasons one significant consequence has been an intensification of competition for available funding. With the increasing competition for funding there is growing concern that there may not be an equitable and efficient method in place for many funders to base their allocation decisions on. These concerns arise from the issues that occur during funding processes such as: how open and competitive is the request for proposal process; is there duplication of the same service; can the organization adequately provide the …
The Meanings Of Underpants And Old Photographs: Notions Of Personhood And Pollution In The Estate Sale, Donna Foulk
The Meanings Of Underpants And Old Photographs: Notions Of Personhood And Pollution In The Estate Sale, Donna Foulk
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
In the estate sale, actors (shoppers and estate sale workers) form notions ofpersonhood and pollution through objects such as half-used bottles of perfume, floral dishes, and family photographs. Actors use these objects to create the gender, personality, religion, hobbies, and occupation of the objects' former owners. The context of the estate sale contributes to these notions of personhood. Estate sales usually occur after a death, almost everything this person has owned is priced for sale, and the estate sale is held within the house of the deceased. This study draws on Mary Douglas' work on pollution as "matter out of place." …
When The Safety Net Fails: An Analysis Of Alternative Long-Term Care Services In Kentucky, Suzanne Dale
When The Safety Net Fails: An Analysis Of Alternative Long-Term Care Services In Kentucky, Suzanne Dale
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
The Problem
In early 2003, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services, faced with a $450 million Medicaid shortfall, implemented several cost-cutting measures to the Medicaid program. The most visible measure included new stricter medical eligibility requirements for long-term care programs. As a result of these new requirements, approximately 2,813 elderly and disabled Kentuckians were denied services in Kentucky’s Aged/Disabled Home and Community-Based Waiver Program, a Medicaid program that provides long-term care services in people’s homes and in community-settings. The Cabinet for Health Services claimed that those who lost home and community-based Medicaid services could receive care through alternative state programs. …

Filling The Poverty Gap, Then And Now, James P. Ziliak
Filling The Poverty Gap, Then And Now, James P. Ziliak
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
The extent to which means-tested transfers, social insurance, and tax credits fill the gap between a family’s private resources and the poverty threshold is a periodic barometer of the social safety net. Using data on families from the Current Population Survey I examine how the level and composition of before- and after-tax and after-transfer poverty gaps changed in response to changes in the policy and economic landscapes over the past two decades. The estimates presented here indicate not only dramatic changes in the level and sources of income maintenance programs filling the poverty gap, but also dramatic changes in which …

Over the last decade, the personal computer has been transformed from an isolated word processor and number cruncher into a communications device. The emergence of the Web, the expansion of broadband connectivity, and new versions of the Windows operating system have made it possible to share information and files around the world with the click of a mouse. So, the good news is that it is now easier than ever to connect to any other host on the Internet to share information or to set up your own Internet based information services. However, this is also the bad news because …
La Influencia Regional Y El Apoyo Ciudadano A Las Reformas Neoliberales Mexicanas, Charles L. Davis, Jorge E. Figueroa
La Influencia Regional Y El Apoyo Ciudadano A Las Reformas Neoliberales Mexicanas, Charles L. Davis, Jorge E. Figueroa
Political Science Faculty Publications

Measuring Underemployment At The County Level, Mark C. Berger, Christopher Bollinger, Paul Coomes
Measuring Underemployment At The County Level, Mark C. Berger, Christopher Bollinger, Paul Coomes
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
As labor markets tightened in the last half of the nineties, economic development and community leaders sought to identify more locally available workers than were indicated by published statistics. Using results from commissioned surveys, they pointed to large numbers of part-time workers who desired full-time work, and to full-time workers who were qualified for better jobs. These statistics were often used to negate low official unemployment rates that deterred firms, concerned by the ostensible shortage of workers, from locating in their counties. We have conducted a larger, statewide, survey of underemployment and linked it to the detailed demographic and labor …
Group Therapy For Incarcerated Women Who Experienced Interpersonal Violence: A Pilot Study, Rebekah G. Bradley, Diane R. Follingstad
Group Therapy For Incarcerated Women Who Experienced Interpersonal Violence: A Pilot Study, Rebekah G. Bradley, Diane R. Follingstad
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
This study evaluated effectiveness of group therapy for incarcerated women with histories of childhood sexual and/or physical abuse. The intervention was based on a two-stage model of trauma treatment and included Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills and writing assignments. We randomly assigned 24 participants to group treatment (13 completed) and 25 to a no-contact comparison condition (18 completed). We evaluated treatment effects, using the Beck Depression Inventory, Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, and Trauma Symptom Inventory. The data demonstrate significant reductions in PTSD, mood, and interpersonal symptoms in the treatment group.

Exit Routes From Welfare: Examining Barriers To Employment, Demographic And Human Capital Factors, Colleen Heflin
Exit Routes From Welfare: Examining Barriers To Employment, Demographic And Human Capital Factors, Colleen Heflin
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
This paper investigates how barriers to employment, human capital, and demographic characteristics affect women’s exit routes off welfare. Specifically, I address two questions. First, what are the avenues through which women leave welfare? Second, are mental and physical health problems, domestic violence, and lack of access to transportation, characteristics that have been ignored in other studies of welfare dynamics, associated with different welfare exit routes? Using multinomial logistic regression and data from the Women’s Employment Survey, this project examines the specific exit route chosen in detail and goes beyond general dynamics associated with welfare exit in order to capture the …

Psychosocial Stress And Cervical Neoplasia Risk, Ann L. Coker, Sharon M. Bond, Margaret M. Madeleine, Kathryn J. Luchok, Lucia Pirisi
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the association between psychosocial stress and preinvasive cervical neoplasia development controlling for HR-HPV infection.
METHODS: This case-control study enrolled low-income women receiving family planning services at health department clinics. There were 59 cases with biopsy confirmed HSIL and 163 with low-grade SIL and 160 controls with normal cervical cytology. A modified SLE scale was used to measure stressful events and the perceived impact of the event in the prior 5 years. Unconditional logistic regression was used to assess SIL risk and stressful events scores and by subscales.
RESULTS: After adjusting for age, HR-HPV infection, and lifetime number …
