Undergraduates As Colleagues: Using Undergraduates As Teaching Assistants In The Basic Course, Wilbur H. Baisinger, Gary L. Peterson, Bonnie Spillman Jan 1984

Undergraduates As Colleagues: Using Undergraduates As Teaching Assistants In The Basic Course, Wilbur H. Baisinger, Gary L. Peterson, Bonnie Spillman

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using a small college basic course as a case study, this article describes a model for involving undergraduate teaching assistants in oral communication instruction. The program responds to pressures created by high enrollment, limited full time faculty, no graduate assistants, and institutional expectations for small laboratory sections. It outlines a team taught format in which faculty present lectures and supervise assistants, while selected undergraduates lead laboratory sessions, grade assignments, consult with students, and participate in weekly planning meetings. The article emphasizes careful selection, structured activities, close grading supervision, and regular feedback as safeguards. It contributes to communication administration by presenting …

Faculty In Community Colleges Should Conduct Research For Publication, Carol S. Hopson Jan 1984

Faculty In Community Colleges Should Conduct Research For Publication, Carol S. Hopson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Challenging the idea that community college faculty should be defined only as teachers, this article argues that research and publication are necessary for instructional improvement, professional identity, and institutional credibility. It traces the historical image of junior colleges as teaching institutions, then notes changes in student populations, instructional conditions, faculty credentials, and community college roles. The article identifies different categories of community college faculty and argues that instructors should investigate student needs, teaching materials, workloads, class size, developmental education, and classroom methods rather than relying on university based research. It also rejects myths that research is administratively irrelevant, incompatible with …

Evaluation Of Service: Department Through Professional Organizations, Bobby R. Patton Jan 1984

Evaluation Of Service: Department Through Professional Organizations, Bobby R. Patton

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Organized around the definition, recognition, and reward of service, this article examines how communication and theatre faculty contributions should be evaluated within departmental, university, professional, and community settings. It reviews service criteria from other academic units, then argues that some activities in speech and theatre are better classified as teaching, research, scholarship, or creative activity rather than service. The article identifies legitimate service work, including administration, program coordination, advising, committee assignments, professional association leadership, editorial work, and community engagement tied to faculty expertise. It also outlines a merit review process and argues that service should be articulated clearly, documented carefully, …

Black's Perception Of Blacks And Whites In Relation To The Expression Or Inhibition Of Anger, Charlie W. Johnson Jan 1984

Black's Perception Of Blacks And Whites In Relation To The Expression Or Inhibition Of Anger, Charlie W. Johnson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present research was concerned with examining the presence of anger in black subjects and determining if and how the experience of anger influences their perceptions of other blacks as well as whites. The hypotheses underlying the present research were: (1) Blacks who inhibit anger (anger inhibited) would exhibit a greater likelihood of viewing whites positively while viewing blacks in a more negative fashion; (2) Blacks who express anger (anger expressed) would exhibit a greater likelihood of viewing blacks more positively while viewing whites in a more negative fashion; (3) Differences were anticipated in the ratings of black vis-a-vis white …

The Expression Of Anger As A Function Of Self-Esteem, Kimberly M. Brooks Jan 1984

The Expression Of Anger As A Function Of Self-Esteem, Kimberly M. Brooks

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between level of self-esteem and anger expression. Fifty female and 36 male university students completed the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale and the Anger Self-Report. A 3 x 2 AVOVA showed a significant relationship between self-esteem and the ASR scales of Anger Awareness, Guilt, Mistrust, and Total Anger. In addition, women were found to experience significantly more anger-related guilt than men, while verbal and physical anger expression were both characteristic of men. The results further indicate that men experience greater mistrust and suspicion of others These finding suggest that low self-esteem individuals report more anger, but have …

Ability To Discriminate And Pronounce Foreign Language Phonemes As A Function Of Age, Maria J. Correa

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Fifty native English speakers (ages: 3, 9, 11 and adults) were asked to discriminate and pronounce Spanish words. The Wepman Auditory Discrimination Test was administered to the subjects to assess their discrimination abilities in their native language. A training session using English pairs of words showed that five-year-olds improved in their discrimination abilities after training but three-year-olds did not. Pronunciation was scored by two native Spanish speakers. Analyses revealed that older subjects pronounced the Spanish words significantly better than did younger subjects. Similar results were obtained for the analyses of Spanish phoneme pronunciation. Moreover, analyses of discrimination abilities on the …

Understanding The Accident Process: Crisis Intervention For The Industrially Injured, Karen W. Sharpe Oct 1983

Understanding The Accident Process: Crisis Intervention For The Industrially Injured, Karen W. Sharpe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the concept of the accident process plays a significant role in determining the course of treatment for the industrially injured. The accident process suggests that underlying psycho-social factors may result in the occurrence and/or maintenance of a state of disability. This disabled state provides greater needs satisfaction for the individual than his habitual behavioral repertoire. the development of the accident process suggests a state of crisis, either as a result of chronic difficulty or an acute reaction to sudden onset of illness or injury. Total rehabilitation of the individual is facilitated by a crisis intervention approach.

Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, E. Culpepper Clark Oct 1983

Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, E. Culpepper Clark

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Reflecting on communication studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, this article questions whether a national field definition would meaningfully resolve local problems of identity, curriculum, and administrative recognition. It describes a department combining speech communication, mass communication, and linguistics, where student demand and public perception have made mass communication more visible than speech. The article considers possible unifying labels, including rhetoric and public communication, while noting practical limits created by professional tracks, degree requirements, community needs, and institutional expectations. It argues that departments will continue to be judged by what they do rather than by field labels, and …

Theatre Programs In American Colleges And Universities, Samuel L. Becker, J. Ann Selzer, Hyeon Cheol Choi Oct 1983

Theatre Programs In American Colleges And Universities, Samuel L. Becker, J. Ann Selzer, Hyeon Cheol Choi

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Reporting the first phase of a national study, this article examines theatre programs in American colleges and universities through questionnaires completed by administrative officers. The study estimates program types, faculty staffing, graduate enrollment, teaching load, production load, artistic work policies, faculty turnover, and theatre heads’ job satisfaction. It also considers the representation of women and minority group members among theatre faculty and graduate students. The findings show that the MFA is the dominant graduate theatre degree, that women make up about half of graduate students but a smaller share of full time faculty, and that programs offering the MFA tend …

Teaching Research Methodology And Writing In The Graduate Communication Program, Lawrence B. Rosenfeld Oct 1983

Teaching Research Methodology And Writing In The Graduate Communication Program, Lawrence B. Rosenfeld

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using editorial experience as a point of departure, this article argues that graduate communication programs must give sustained attention to research methodology and scholarly writing. It links publication to professional advancement while emphasizing broader benefits of research training, including skepticism, problem solving, careful inference, and responsible evaluation of evidence. The article identifies recurring manuscript problems involving significance, research design, statistical method, writing clarity, documentation, and physical presentation. It also suggests that weak research often reflects not only technical problems but also attitudes toward inquiry, communication, and professional contribution. The article contributes to graduate education by connecting research instruction, writing pedagogy, …

Retrenchment, The Department, And The Association, Kenneth E. Andersen Oct 1983

Retrenchment, The Department, And The Association, Kenneth E. Andersen

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Examining retrenchment as both an institutional process and a disciplinary concern, this article argues that communication departments must prepare for financial stress through careful planning, shared governance, and visible evidence of program quality. It distinguishes short term financial emergencies from longer term resource erosion and emphasizes that faculty should participate in decisions affecting educational policy, tenure, staffing, and program structure. The article identifies criteria often used in retrenchment reviews, including mission, quality, centrality, cost, support, demand, and duplication. It also describes how professional associations can help departments before and during review by providing disciplinary identity, evaluative standards, publications, consultants, guidelines, …

Saving The Speech Communication Department: A Symposium, Andrew D. Wolvin Oct 1983

Saving The Speech Communication Department: A Symposium, Andrew D. Wolvin

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Introducing a symposium on departmental survival, this piece frames speech communication as both increasingly important to American business and industry and vulnerable within higher education retrenchment. It summarizes evidence that workplace communication depends heavily on listening, speaking, interpersonal interaction, interviewing, writing, persuasion, and small group problem solving, while noting that some universities have considered eliminating speech communication departments despite strong enrollments. The introduction connects these pressures to ACA’s survival strategies work and previews case studies from departments facing institutional threat. It emphasizes faculty cohesion, departmental quality, campus political support, and professional resources as important factors in defending speech communication programs.

Saving Communication At Suny, Albany, Kathleen E. Kendall Oct 1983

Saving Communication At Suny, Albany, Kathleen E. Kendall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Describing a departmental survival effort at SUNY Albany, this case study recounts how the Department of Rhetoric and Communication responded when administrators considered dissolving it and redistributing faculty into other units. The account identifies several sources of vulnerability, including understaffing, faculty turnover, heavy enrollments, uncertain disciplinary fit within the humanities, and limited understanding of communication by campus colleagues. It also explains how student response, support from key administrators, faculty unity, strategic documentation, and a university wide study committee helped preserve the department. The case concludes with lessons about resource allocation, administrative location, collective faculty action, and the importance of building …
