Young People's Experiences Of Crime: An Investigation Into The Victimisation And Offending Of Inner-City Dublin Youth, Kalis Pope Jan 2015

Young People's Experiences Of Crime: An Investigation Into The Victimisation And Offending Of Inner-City Dublin Youth, Kalis Pope

Doctoral

This project is one of the first empirical investigations into youth victimisation and offending in Ireland and is one of three research projects that were established under the Youth Crime Research Project: Young People’s Experiences of Crime. Victim surveys are of particular interest to this study, as they help to illuminate the 'dark figure' of crime through ascertaining individual's experiences of victimisation, while simultaneously collecting pertinent information regarding their own level of criminality. A common failure among the majority of victim surveys, however, is that they do not investigate the experiences of young people. This project seeks to address this …

Visualising Migrant Voices: Co-Creative Documentary And The Politics Of Listening, Darcy Alexandra Jan 2015

Visualising Migrant Voices: Co-Creative Documentary And The Politics Of Listening, Darcy Alexandra

Doctoral

This ethnography of media production explores the challenges of literally and figuratively visualising voice. The labour of a shared production and the distribution of the audio-visual documentary essays unfolded within a field of diverse, and at times, conflicting interests. For this reason, judicious attention to what I name ‘encounters’ of ‘political listening’ (Bickford 1996; Dreher 2009) provides one framework for theorising the challenges of researching with marginalised subjects and stories, and the contradictions of developing shared practices within proprietary contexts. These encounters reveal moments of listening and being heard, struggles over ‘veracity’ and ‘evidence,’ and the power relations inherent in …

Enhance The Connection Between Academic Studies And Internship, Frank Cullen

Other resources

This module provides a structure to develop an enhanced learner experience. The concept of internship is complex. It hinges on the relationships and connections between the Schools, student, industry and institutions. It relates to the quality of the engagement with academic, administrative and support staff as well as their interaction with and for students and potential employers. At the institutes core should be the quality, breadth and appropriateness of internship that the student and industry experience.

Knowledge Sharing In Organisations: A Bayesian Analysis Of The Role Of Reciprocity And Formal Structure, Alberto Caimo, Alessandro Lomi Jan 2015

Knowledge Sharing In Organisations: A Bayesian Analysis Of The Role Of Reciprocity And Formal Structure, Alberto Caimo, Alessandro Lomi

Articles

We examine the conditions under which knowledge embedded in advice relations is likely to reach across intraorganizational boundaries and be shared between distant organizational members. We emphasize boundary-crossing relations because activities of knowledge transfer and sharing across subunit boundaries are systematically related to desirable organizational outcomes. Our main objective is to understand how organizational and social processes interact to sustain the transfer of knowledge carried by advice relations. Using original fieldwork and data that we have collected on members of the top management team in a multiunit industrial group, we show that knowledge embedded in task advice relations is unlikely …

Affordable Housing, Thomas Power Jan 2015

Affordable Housing, Thomas Power

Articles

The McKinsey Global Institute, an economic think-tank, last year published a report on global housing. The report finds that City dwellers globally pay $650bn a year more on housing costs than they can afford and wages of low income earners lag growth in housing costs leading to greater income inequality and out-migration of skilled workers.

Institutional Mergers In Ireland, Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2015

Institutional Mergers In Ireland, Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

The importance of knowledge as a driver of social and economic growth and prosperity, and the increasingly competitive “global race for knowledge and talent” (Hazelkorn, Higher Educ Manage Policy 21(1):55–76, 2009) have combined to transform the higher education landscape, forcing national governments and higher education institutions (HEIs) to pursue new ways of addressing the challenges of a multi-polar world order. Rising demand for higher education (HE), as part of the broader shift from elite to mass to universal participation, has led to the emergence of new models of provision. At the same time, many governments face restrictions on public resources …

Analysis Of Breath And Urine Alcohol Levels To Assess The Impact Of Lower Limits On New And Recently Qualified Drivers, Brian Murphy

Students Learning with Communities

The aim of this project was to increase awareness on the dangers associated with drink driving and how alcohol can impact on new and recently qualified drivers. To achieve this, volunteers were asked to complete a survey as well as supply breath and urine samples the morning after they had consumed alcohol. This approach was used to highlight to volunteers that it is still possible to be over the legal limit the day after consuming alcohol. The survey was used to test the knowledge of the volunteers on the rules of the road and how alcohol impairs drivers. This project …
