The Hausman-Taylor Panel Data Model With Serial Correlation, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu

This paper modifies the Hausman and Taylor (1981) panel data estimator to allow for serial correlation in the remainder disturbances. It demonstrates the gains in efficiency of this estimator versus the standard panel data estimators that ignore serial correlation using Monte Carlo experiments.

I write this from the perspective of an apprentice-trained bookbinder and conservator who has spent most of his career working in academic research libraries in the US, work that has included working primarily with special collections, but also heavily used circulating collections and digitization. During this time I have also worked with many other conservators, interns from conservation/preservation programs and students of museum studies and librarianship. Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study found that the transfer of skills gained through military training was not statistically different from skills related to most forms of non-military training. In practice, for the transitioning service-member, this research highlights the importance of seeking and cultivating opportunities to leverage knowledge, skills, and abilities developed as a result of military training and experience. In policy, individuals developing military training programs should purposefully focus on curriculum development in a way that makes the linkages between learned skills and the civilian labor market clear and explicit. This brief is about obesity rates among OEF/OIF veterans and how race, education level, gender, and use of the VA play a role in obesity rates. For practice and policy, a fitness education program should be implemented by the VA to help lower obesity rates since obesity can cause more serious health problems. Suggestions for future research include expanding the study to involve veterans from other military eras and expanding the study to look at more risks associated with obesity.

We investigate the issue of testing for structural breaks in large cointegrated panels with common and idiosyncratic regressors. We prove a panel Functional Central Limit Theorem. We show that the estimated coefficients of the common regressors have a mixed normal distribution, whilst the estimated coefficients of the idiosyncratic regressors have a normal distribution. We consider strong dependence across the idiosyncratic regressors by allowing for the presence of (stationary and nonstationary) common factors. This brief is about the coping strategies used by veterans with PTSD and how social support relates to those coping strategies. In practice and policy, psycho-educational interventions could decrease symptoms, as well as increasing belief in controlling life events; policymakers should provide support to veterans and their families. Suggestions for future research include looking at more representative samples, using other methods than self-reporting mechanisms, and analyzing how veterans with PTSD utilize social support networks.

This brief is about influence of military service on later-life mortality among veterans. In policy and practice, programs should provide more services for African American veterans whose fathers had a lower education, and policies should focus on employment status, income, health conditions, smoking habits, and obesity when addressing veteran mortality likelihood. Suggestions for future research include broadening the study's sample, incorporating length of service and historical context of service into the study, and expanding the number of variables studied.

A Monte Carlo Study Of Ranked Efficiency Estimates From Frontier Models, William C. Horrace, Seth Richards-Shubik

Economics - All Scholarship

Parametric stochastic frontier models yield firm-level conditional distributions of inefficiency that are truncated normal. Given these distributions, how should one assess and rank firm-level efficiency? This study compares the techniques of estimating (a) the conditional mean of inefficiency and (b) probabilities that firms are most or least efficient. Monte Carlo experiments suggest that the efficiency probabilities are easier to estimate (less noisy) in terms of mean absolute percent error when inefficiency has large variation across firms. Along the way we tackle some interesting problems associated with simulating and assessing estimator performance in the stochastic frontier model.

Chemical Composition Of 16th- To 18th-Century Glass Beads Excavated In Paris, Laure Dussubieux, Bernard Gratuze

Dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, 63 glass artifacts (mostly beads) recovered from two sites in Paris, France, were investigated using chemical analysis in an attempt to determine their place of origin. The late-16th-century material from the Jardins du Carrousel consisted of small, monochrome drawn beads with a soda-lime composition. Attributed to the 17th and 18th centuries, the beads recovered at the adjacent site of the Cours Napoléon were more diverse in shape, color, and composition. Although provenance attribution was difficult due to a lack of comparative data, it was possible to identify an increasing variety of glass recipes …

In August of 1690, a fleet of ships under the command of Sir William Phips set sail from Boston to attack Quebec City during the second year of King William's War. The campaign failed and, as the fleet retreated, a number of vessels were wrecked in the St. Lawrence during a violent storm. The remains of one of these was discovered by a diver in a cove at l'Anse aux Bouleaux, Quebec, in 1994. Believed to be the Elizabeth and Mary, the wreck yielded numerous artifacts, including a wide array of weaponry. Among the long arms was a musket whose …

As a result of examination of numerous collections of glass beads in northeastern North America and elsewhere, and as a result of a study of the procedures used in their manufacture, the authors propose a classification and nomenclature which they hope will permit exact descriptions and a reference base for all beads found in archaeological excavations. New bead types may be added to the system which is expansible to accommodate all possible variations.

Heirloom Blue-Glass Melon Beads Of The Tani Tribes, Northeast India, Barbie Campbell Cole

The Tani tribes of Arunachal Pradesh in India's remote northeast wear various heirloom necklaces including those composed of highly distinctive melon-shaped beads of wound turquoise-blue glass. These are unique to central Arunachal and were already of considerable age and very highly prized in the early 19th century. The Tanis believe their beads were made by a mythical ancestor in Tibet, but their bubbly opaque blue glass and wound method of production suggest a Chinese origin. This paper studies short-term and long-term factors that affected the image of the United States between the years 2000 and 2010. It begins by showing how the election of George W. Bush, the Iraq War, and the election of Barack Obama affected the United States' image in several nations. It then uses data from the Pew 2004 Global Survey to examine longer-term factors that influenced the U.S.'s international image. Using individual- and national- level regression analyses, it discovers several factors that predict how positive ratings of the United States were on an international level. How do global contests impact the conduct of public diplomacy? This paper, taking Zionist public diplomacy as a case-study in response to the Israel-as-occupier image, proposes that when critical events shock the Jewish world by striking negatively at the legitimacy of Jewish identity-the right to believe and act as a Jew in a non-Jewish world-they stimulate a public diplomacy backlash. This happened after the Six-Day War of 1967, during the Second Intifada of the early 2000s, and most recently in the lead-up to the unilateral Palestinian statehood bid in 2011. This article presents an investigation into the use of "nation building" rhetoric as a motive to host mega- sporting events. The small country's rise into the apex of international relations did not occur immediately after the first sparks of the revolution.
