Inefficiency In The Shadow Of Unobservable Outside Options, Madhav S. Aney Jul 2012

Inefficiency In The Shadow Of Unobservable Outside Options, Madhav S. Aney

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper considers the problem of allocating an object between two players in an environment with one sided asymmetric information when their outside options depend on each other's type, causing the outside option of the uninformed player to be unobservable to her. Consequently efficient mechanisms under budget balance are not always available even when there is no uncertainty about which of the two players values the object more. A simple condition on the outside options turns out to be both necessary and sufficient to guarantee the first best. I also characterise the second best allocation under some conditions and show …

Sieve Estimation Of Panel Data Models With Cross Section Dependence, Liangjun Su, Sainan Jin Jul 2012

Sieve Estimation Of Panel Data Models With Cross Section Dependence, Liangjun Su, Sainan Jin

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating semiparametric panel data models with cross section dependence, where the individual-specific regressors enter the model nonparametrically whereas the common factors enter the model linearly. We consider both heterogeneous and homogeneous regression relationships when both the time and cross-section dimensions are large. We propose sieve estimators for the nonparametric regression functions by extending Pesaran’s (2006) common correlated effect (CCE) estimator to our semiparametric framework. Asymptotic normal distributions for the proposed estimators are derived and asymptotic variance estimators are provided. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that our estimators perform well in finite samples.

How does the US economy affect China’s? While much had been written about the decoupling between developed and the emerging economies, one scholar has put forward a contrarian view.

Political Participation: Influences And Implications, Singapore Management University Jun 2012

Political Participation: Influences And Implications, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

From the understanding of topical issues to activism, education has been said to play a major role in promoting political participation. Past research has shown that the educated would display stronger tendencies to vote, join political parties and engage in civic activities. However, if education predicts political participation, why do some countries with lower education rates face higher chances of political unrest? For instance, the average schooling in East Asian countries exceeds the average for Latin American countries. Yet, Latin America experiences higher levels of political unrest.

Will The Obama Administration Change Tack On Protectionism Before Things Get Worse?, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

The new American government under President Barrack Obama is not the biggest cheerleader for free trade. With its own domestic economy entering this steep downturn, talks of protectionism in one form or another have been voiced every now and then. Catchy buzzwords like “Buy America” are gaining traction. The temptation to turn inwards, driven by the obligation to votes is growing stronger.

Public Health Regulation: The Impact Of Intersections Between Trade & Investment Treaties In Asia, Locknie Hsu Jun 2012

Public Health Regulation: The Impact Of Intersections Between Trade & Investment Treaties In Asia, Locknie Hsu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There has been an explosive growth of free trade agreements (FTAs) in recent years. The World Trade Report 2011 of the World Trade Organization (WTO) shows Asian members to be among the most active in signing preferential trade agreements. This unprecedented growth has attracted much academic and policy discussion on aspects such as their effects on trade liberalization, problems raised by specific trade and investment provisions, dispute settlement, and concerns over “regionalism”. Like such areas, public health regulation has been significantly affected by such treaties. FTAs, together with bilateral investment treaties (BITs), are rapidly forming a source of intersecting state …

Visualizing Media Bias Through Twitter, Jisun An, Meeyoung Cha, Gummadi, Krishna, Jon Crowcroft, Daniele Queria Jun 2012

Visualizing Media Bias Through Twitter, Jisun An, Meeyoung Cha, Gummadi, Krishna, Jon Crowcroft, Daniele Queria

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional media outlets are known to report political news in a biased way, potentially affecting the political beliefs of the audience and even altering their voting behaviors. Therefore, tracking bias in everyday news and building a platform where people can receive balanced news information is important. We propose a model that maps the news media sources along a dimensional dichotomous political spectrum using the co-subscriptions relationships inferred by Twitter links. By analyzing 7 million follow links, we show that the political dichotomy naturally arises on Twitter when we only consider direct media subscription. Furthermore, we demonstrate a real-time Twitter-based application …

When A Friend In Twitter Is A Friend In Life, Wei Xie, Cheng Li, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Xueqing Gong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Twitter is a fast-growing online social network service (SNS) where users can "follow" any other user to receive his or her mini-blogs which are called "tweets". In this paper, we study the problem of identifying a user's off-line real-life social community, which we call the user'sTwitter off-line community, purely from examining Twitter network structure. Based on observations from our user-verified Twitter data and results from previous works, we propose three principles about Twitter off-line communities. Incorporating these principles, we develop a novel algorithm to iteratively discover the Twitter off-line community based on a new way of measuring user closeness. According …

What Does Software Engineering Community Microblog About?, Yuan Tian, Palakorn Achananuparp, Ibrahim Nelman Lubis, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Microblogging is a new trend to communicate and to disseminate information. One microblog post could potentially reach millions of users. Millions of microblogs are generated on a daily basis on popular sites such as Twitter. The popularity of microblogging among programmers, software engineers, and software users has also led to their use of microblogs to communicate software engineering issues apart from using emails and other traditional communication channels.Understanding how millions of users use microblogs in software engineering related activities would shed light on ways we could leverage the fast evolving microblogging content to aid software development efforts. In this work, …

Sri Lanka's Informal Religious Economy: Evangelical Competitiveness And Buddhist Hegemony In Perspective, Orlando Woods Jun 2012

Sri Lanka's Informal Religious Economy: Evangelical Competitiveness And Buddhist Hegemony In Perspective, Orlando Woods

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Existing religious economy models maintain that as religious regulation increases, levels of interreligious competition decrease. But new understandings of the market dynamics of religious oligopolies necessitate new understandings of religious competitiveness. A relational model of competitiveness using the case of evangelical Christianity in Buddhist-majority Sri Lanka is proposed. In Sri Lanka the informal religious economy is defined by competitiveness among evangelical Christian groups and, although not recognized by the state, is closely regulated. The focus in this article is on the scalar determinations of evangelical competitiveness, patterns of secrecy and subterfuge, the formation of strategic extra-group networks that enable competitiveness, …

The Long-Term Impact Of War On Health And Wellbeing In Northern Vietnam: Some Glimpses From A Recent Survey, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, Kim Korinek Jun 2012

The Long-Term Impact Of War On Health And Wellbeing In Northern Vietnam: Some Glimpses From A Recent Survey, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, Kim Korinek

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

War is considered one of the most intransigent obstacles to development; yet, the long-run effects of war on individual health have rarely been examined in the context of developing countries. Based on unique data recently collected as a pilot follow-up to the Vietnam Longitudinal Survey, this study examines health status of northern Vietnamese war cohorts (those who entered adulthood during the Vietnam War and now represent Vietnam’s older-adult population). To ascertain whether and how war impacts old-age physical and mental health, we compare multi-dimensional measures of health among war survivors, including civilians, combatants, noncombatants, and nonveterans involved in militia activities. …

Myanmar: The Beginning Of Reform And The End Of Sanctions, Marco Bünte, Clara Portela Jun 2012

Myanmar: The Beginning Of Reform And The End Of Sanctions, Marco Bünte, Clara Portela

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Since March 2011, Burma/Myanmar has witnessed a liberalization of the press, the release of political prisoners and the initiation of a political dialogue between the regime on the one hand and the opposition and ethnic groups on the other. The reforms culminated in by-elections on 1 April 2012, which in turn resulted in a landslide victory for Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD). Overall, political reforms in Burma/Myanmar are being initiated from “above.” They are elite-driven and stem from the president and progressive members of the military-dominated party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

The 5c Challenges Of Cohesion, David Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The outcomes and consequences of population policies affect all areas of Singaporeans' lives. At stake is not just how citizens perceive the Government or view a political party. At stake is the very quality of our lives in physical dimensions such as space and infrastructure support; economic dimensions such as jobs and taxes; and social dimensions such as inter-group relations and commitment to Singapore.

Space And The City: Gender Identities In The Seventeenth-Century Norwich, Fiona Williamson Jun 2012

Space And The City: Gender Identities In The Seventeenth-Century Norwich, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Influenced by interdisciplinary studies and the ‘spatial turn’ in social history, this article explores the relationship between space and the construction of gender identity amongst the poor to middling sorts of seventeenth-century Norwich. To this end I have considered gendered interaction in different ‘types' of space: domestic, private space, ‘borderline’ space – such as the alehouse or threshold – and, finally, the public space of streets and markets. Each section explores the relevance of recent spatial historiography in the Norwich context, and evaluates whether men and women inhabited different ‘worlds' in the city, not only in terms of their physical …

Shanghai’S Alternative Futures: The World Expo, Citizen Intellectuals, And China’S New Civil Society, William A. Callahan Jun 2012

Shanghai’S Alternative Futures: The World Expo, Citizen Intellectuals, And China’S New Civil Society, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Civil society seems to be a dead issue in China because its formal aspects of mobilization and institutionalization are so tightly regulated by the party-state. This article looks to activities in and around the Shanghai World Expo (2010) to rethink the meaning of civil society and political action in China. Through an analysis of the Expo’s national, theme, and corporate pavilions, it shows how Beijing is planning a harmonious future for China and the world. Yet alongside this unified future, it examines how Shanghai’s citizen intellectuals – filmmaker Jia Zhangke, artist Cai Guoqiang, and blogger Han Han – are creating …

Ambitions Of A Global City: Arts, Culture And Creative Economy In 'Post-Crisis' Singapore, Lily Kong Jun 2012

Ambitions Of A Global City: Arts, Culture And Creative Economy In 'Post-Crisis' Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper chronicles some of the key policies pertaining to the arts and culture in post-independent Singapore. A brief summary is first provided of the early (1960s and 1970s) cultural policy focusing on the harnessing of arts and culture for nation-building purposes, followed by the subsequent (1980s) recognition that the arts and culture had tourist dollar potential. The paper then expands on the cultural/creative economy policy of the 2000s, in which arts, heritage, media and design are recognized for their economic value (beyond their role in tourism to include their export value and their importance in attracting global workers). The …

China’S Futures And The World’S Future: An Introduction, William A. Callahan Jun 2012

China’S Futures And The World’S Future: An Introduction, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

China’s growing economic, political, and cultural power is an important global issue; Chinese people are increasingly interested in thinking about their country’s future as a world power. This article introduces the special issue ‘China’s futures – and the world’s future’ by discussing how futurology works in China. It argues that Chinese futures studies exhibit two general trends: (1) a shift from locating the future outside China to see China itself as the future, and (2) a shift from officials centrally planning the future to many different people dreaming about many different futures. The battle for the future thus is not …

Negotiating Crisis In The New Media Environment: Evolution Of Crises Online, Gaining Legitimacy Offline, Augustine Pang, Nasrath Begam Abul Hassan, Aaron Chee Yang Chong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines how crises originate online, how different new media platforms escalate crises, and how issues become legitimized offline when they transit onto mainstream media. We study five social media crises, which includes United breaks guitars and Southwest Air’s too fat to fly. Crises are triggered online when stakeholders are empowered by new media platforms that allow user-generated content to be posted online without any filtering. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter emerge as top crises breeding grounds due to their large user base and the lack of gatekeeping. Facebook and blogs are responsible for escalating crises beyond the immediate stakeholder …

Repairing An Organization’S Image In Times Of Crises: What Strategies To Use When?, Augustine Pang, Benjamin Meng-Keng Ho, Nuraini Malik

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The image repair theory has been described as the “dominant paradigm for examining corporate communication in times of crises” (Dardis & Haigh, 2009, p. 101). While the theory, which posits five major strategies and 14 sub-strategies, has been applied extensively, a fundamental question remains: What strategies should be used when? Through meta-analysis of the image repair studies, we examine the persuasiveness/effectiveness in the use of different strategies. This study addresses the call by Haigh and Brubaker (2010) to conduct more studies to understand the use of strategies across different crisis types with a view to providing a template to equip …

Traditional Tests For Implication Of Terms Prevail In Singapore Despite ‘Acceptance’ Of Belize Test: Sembcorp Marine Ltd V Ppl Holdings Pte Ltd, Yihan Goh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is an ongoing legal debate concerning the test governing the implication of terms in fact, prompted in no small measure by Lord Hoffmann’s influential speech in Attorney General of Belize v Belize Telecom. In Belize, Lord Hoffmann famously said that the question for a court considering whether a term should be implied is ‘whether such a [term] would spell out in express words what the instrument, read against the relevant background, would reasonably be understood to mean’. This has generally been regarded by judges3 and academics4 as subsuming the implication of terms within the broader rubric of ‘interpretation’. The …

Women’S Entry Into Self-Employment In Urban China: The Role Of Family In Creating Gendered Mobility Patterns, Qian Forrest Zhang, Zi Pan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

How did family characteristics affect women and men differently in self-employment participation in urban China? Analyses of national data show dual marriage penalties for women. Marketization made married women more vulnerable to lay-offs from state-sector jobs; their likelihood of being pushed into unskilled self-employment surpassed that of any other groups. The revitalized patriarchal family tradition favored men in family businesses and resulted in their higher rates of entering entrepreneurial self-employment. Married women who had the education to pursue entrepreneurial self-employment were constrained by family responsibilities to state-sector jobs for access to family services, and had much lower rates in entering …

The Dimensionality Of Political Space: Epistemological And Methodological Considerations, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Laver Jun 2012

The Dimensionality Of Political Space: Epistemological And Methodological Considerations, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Laver

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Spatial characterizations of agents' preferences lie at the heart of many theories of political competition. These give rise to explicitly dimensional interpretations. Parties define and differentiate themselves in terms of substantive policy issues, and the configuration of such issues that is required for a good description of political competition affects how we think substantively about the underlying political space in which parties compete. For this reason a great deal of activity in political science consists of estimating such configurations in particular real settings. We focus on three main issues in this article. First, we discuss the nature of political differences …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Dark Triad of personality is composed of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. Despite the common belief that these traits are undesirable, the media is awash with characters that embody the Dark Triad. Characters like Gregory House, M.D., Batman (a.k.a. the Dark Knight), and James BOND all embody these traits and are some of the most popular media franchises today. As entertaining as these characters are, they provide us with a window into the dark side of human nature. Instead of treating the dark side of human nature as inherently maladaptive, we provide an alternative view that, despite their costs, traits …

Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng Lin, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The study indicates that Brownian motion, finite and infinite activity jumps are present in the ultra-high frequency VIX data. The total quadratic variation can be split into a continuous component of 29% and a jump component of 71%. Jump activities on ultra-high frequency VIX data are found informative in ex-ante identifying subgroups of hedge funds that deliver significant outperformance. In the months that follow large jumps, strategies exposing to long volatility and extreme risk tend to deliver positive performance in extreme market environments. In the months that follow small jumps, possibly as a result of trading illiquidity, most fund strategies …
