Role And Impact Of Energy In The Business Cycle, Bao Tan Huynh
Role And Impact Of Energy In The Business Cycle, Bao Tan Huynh
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Given the fundamental role of energy in the economy, the macroeconomic literature contains a large body of work on the impact of oil/energy on the business cycle, with much of the attention focusing on energy supply shocks, mostly modeled as exogenous oil/energy price increases. And yet, the oil price hikes pre-2008 suggest that other shocks to the energy market may be the source of such instance of price disturbances, so that their effects on the economy are no longer predicted by exogenous energy supply shocks. In such scenario, it is no longer valid to treat energy price disturbances as exogenous …
Characterizing Silent Users In Social Media Communities, Wei Gong, Ee-Peng Lim, Feida Zhu
Characterizing Silent Users In Social Media Communities, Wei Gong, Ee-Peng Lim, Feida Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Silent users often constitute a significant proportion of an online user-generated content system. In the context of social media such as Twitter, users can opt to be silent all or most of the time. They are often called the invisible participants or lurkers. As lurkers contribute little to the online content, existing analysis often overlooks their presence and voices. However, we argue that understanding lurkers is important in many applications such as recommender systems, targeted advertising, and social sensing. This research therefore seeks to characterize lurkers in social media and propose methods to profile them. We examine 18 weeks of …
Solving Multi-Vehicle Profitable Tour Problem Via Knowledge Adoption In Evolutionary Bi-Level Programming, Stephanus Daniel Handoko, Abhishek Gupta, Chen Kim Heng, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yew Soon Ong, Puay Siew Tan
Solving Multi-Vehicle Profitable Tour Problem Via Knowledge Adoption In Evolutionary Bi-Level Programming, Stephanus Daniel Handoko, Abhishek Gupta, Chen Kim Heng, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yew Soon Ong, Puay Siew Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Profitable tour problem (PTP) belongs to the class of vehicle routing problem (VRP) with profits seeking to maximize the difference between the total collected profit and the total cost incurred. Traditionally, PTP involves single vehicle. In this paper, we consider PTP with multiple vehicles. Unlike the classical VRP that seeks to serve all customers, PTP involves the strategic-level customer selection so as to maximize the total collected profit and the operational-level route optimization to minimize the total cost incurred. Therefore, PTP is essentially the knapsack problem at the strategic level with VRP at the operational level. That means the evolutionary …

The Visual Turn In Ir: Documentary Filmmaking As A Critical Method, William A. Callahan
The Visual Turn In Ir: Documentary Filmmaking As A Critical Method, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Although the field of international relations (IR) is arguably in the midst of a ‘visual turn’, few scholars have directly discussed research methods for studying visual international politics. This article follows the aesthetic turn’s call to resist the rational methods that frame our understanding of ourselves and the world. Yet it also argues that the visual turn is more than an elaboration of the aesthetic turn. While analyses of visual culture are characteristically suspicious of the power of images, this article argues that making films can provide an innovative method for studying IR. In particular, the visual turn can better …

If We Have No Differences, We Would Be In Trouble, David Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In a feature interview on his views on inclusivity in Singapore, SMU Behavioural Sciences Institute Director Professor David Chan commented that Singapore does well in inclusive growth and racial and religious harmony but poorly in local-foreigner relations. He suggested focusing on commonalities associated with social identities, shared values and core principles to address disagreements.
Shining The Spotlight On Cultural Policy, Tarn How Tan, Su Fern Hoe
Shining The Spotlight On Cultural Policy, Tarn How Tan, Su Fern Hoe
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Singapore has come a long way since its days of being described as a “cultural desert". The credit goes to an aggressive arts and culture development policy backed by significant funding. To fulfil its vision of Singapore as “a global city for the arts" and a “Creative City”, the government rolled out masterplans such as those for the Renaissance City and creative industries. Most recently it called for accessible community arts for every Singaporean through the Arts and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR) of 2012.

Too Materialistic To Get Married And Have Children?, Norman P. Li, Amy J. Y. Lim, Ming-Hong Tsai, Jiaqing O
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
We developed new materials to induce a luxury mindset and activate materialistic values, and examined materialism’s relationship to attitudes toward marriage and having children in Singapore. Path analyses indicated that materialistic values led to more negative attitudes toward marriage, which led to more negative attitudes toward children, which in turn led to a decreased number of children desired. Results across two studies highlight, at the individual level, the tradeoff between materialistic values and attitudes toward marriage and procreation and suggest that a consideration of psychological variables such as materialistic values may allow for a better understanding of larger-scale socioeconomic issues …
Twenty Years' Evolution Of North Korean Migration, 1994-2014: A Human Security Perspective, Jiyoung Song
Twenty Years' Evolution Of North Korean Migration, 1994-2014: A Human Security Perspective, Jiyoung Song
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Over the past two decades, there have been notable changes in North Korean migration: from forced migration to trafficking in women, from heroic underground railways to people smuggling by Christian missionaries. The migration has taken mixed forms of asylum seeking, human trafficking, undocumented labour migration and people smuggling. The paper follows the footsteps of North Korean migrants from China through Southeast Asia to South Korea, and from there to the United Kingdom, to see the dynamic correlation between human (in)security and irregular migration. It analyses how individual migrant's agency interacts with other key actors in the migration system and eventually …
Killing New Vistas With The Over-Regulation Of Recreational 'Drone' Use, Siyuan Chen
Killing New Vistas With The Over-Regulation Of Recreational 'Drone' Use, Siyuan Chen
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of remote-controlled copters – often given the convenient but misleading epithets of unmanned aerial vehicles or “drones” – by recreational users to capture aerial photographs and videos on an unprecedented scale. Asia is no exception. The convergence of cutting-edge technological developments in gyroscopic gimbals, long-range wireless transmissions, GPS-enabled stabilisation, GPS-enabled flightpath-preprogramming, first-person-views, and compact digital imaging has led to the proliferation of affordable camera-carrying “drones” that even hobbyists can pilot with reasonable safety. Thus far, despite purported controversies there have not been any reports of serious …
Letting In The Light – Finding Your Tragic Hero, Nadja Alexander
Letting In The Light – Finding Your Tragic Hero, Nadja Alexander
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In this essay, Nadja Alexander explores the melodramatic nature of the tales we tell when we are stuck in difficult conversations and tense situations. Whether in public or private life, when we find ourselves in conflict we tend to use particular storytelling patterns called melodramatic narratives. Here we explore the potentially destructive nature of these conflict storytelling patterns and consider the extent to which they are wired into the default mechanisms of our DNA. Drawing upon ideas from the practice of storytelling, narrative structures, and conflict coaching theory, Nadja shows how we can mindfully engage our emotional intelligence, to find …

Xi Jinping’s latest book, The Governance of China, is popping up in odd places. It was prominently displayed on Facebook-founder Mark Zuckerberg’s desk when he entertained China’s Internet czar Lu Wei in December 2014. As Zuckerman explained: “I’ve bought copies of this book for my colleagues as well. I want them to understand socialism with Chinese characteristics.” Then in late March, Governance appeared at the annual Association for Asian Studies conference in Chicago—on the table of the China International Book Trading Corporation.

Good Faith: Helping Commercial Parties Or Creating An Unnecessary Burden?, Ee-Ing Ong
Good Faith: Helping Commercial Parties Or Creating An Unnecessary Burden?, Ee-Ing Ong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
One of the challenges facing Asian legal systems in the coming years is whether the courts should impose a general duty of good faith in contracts. The doctrine of good faith has been making inroads in various common law jurisdictions, most recently in Canada where the Supreme Court held in Bhasin v. Hrynew, 2014 SCC 71 that there was a duty of honest performance in all contracts. The idea behind imposing a duty of good faith in all contracts is to ensure that parties essentially “play fair” in contract negotiations and/or performance. However, is such a duty really necessary for …

Unilever promotes water sustainability through product innovation. By October 2007, it had become apparent that competition in the laundry products segment in Vietnam was heating up rapidly. Huyen Bui, the senior brand manager for Comfort at Unilever Vietnam, was contemplating how to stay ahead of long-time rival, Procter & Gamble (P&G), in terms of market share. In April 2007, Unilever launched Comfort One Rinse, a fabric conditioner designed to reduce water use in hand-washed laundry by 66 percent. Six months later, P&G responded by launching Downy One Rinse, a nearly identical product.

Specification Test For Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Sainan Jin, Yonghui Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this paper, we propose a consistent nonparametric test for linearity in panel data models with interactive fixed effects. To construct the test statistic, we need to estimate the model under the null hypothesis of linearity and then obtain the restricted residuals. We show that after being appropriately centered and standardized, the test statistic is asymptotically normally distributed both under the null hypothesis and a sequence of Pitman local alternatives. To improve the finite sample performance, we propose a bootstrap procedure to obtain the bootstrap p-values. A small set of Monte Carlo simulations illustrates that our test performs well in …

Countries across the world have witnessed tremendous expansion of adult education and dramatic growth of adult learners. Moreover, with the growing importance of life-long learning, online learning has become a popular tool which is well received by adult learners. In order to enhance adult learners’ learning experience, we have conducted an exploratory research on online learning for adult learners to understand the challenges faced by them in their pursuit of higher education. The results suggest that technical trainings or preparations are needed prior to e-learning and infrastructure needs to be improved. The findings also emphasize on the importance of using …
Modified Qml Estimation Of Spatial Autoregressive Models With Unknown Heteroskedasticity And Nonnormality, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang
Modified Qml Estimation Of Spatial Autoregressive Models With Unknown Heteroskedasticity And Nonnormality, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
In the presence of heteroskedasticity, Lin and Lee (2010) show that the quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimator of the spatial autoregressive (SAR) model can be inconsistent as a ‘necessary’ condition for consistency can be violated, and thus propose robust GMM estimators for the model. In this paper, we first show that this condition may hold in certain situations and when it does the regular QML estimator can still be consistent. In cases where this condition is violated, we propose a simple modified QML estimation method robust against unknown heteroskedasticity. In both cases, asymptotic distributions of the estimators are derived, and methods …
Expropriation Risk And Competition With The Military, Madhav S. Aney, Giovanni Ko
Expropriation Risk And Competition With The Military, Madhav S. Aney, Giovanni Ko
Research Collection School Of Economics
How can agents in the military, who control the means of coercion, commit not to expropriate from producers? In this paper we propose competition within the military as one of the mechanisms that can deter predation and consequently create commitment. In our model, even if agents within the military could expropriate all output costlessly, it is attractive to protect producers from predating military units. This is because there is a marginal defensive advantage and consequently defense is an effective way to potentially eliminate other military units, reducing competition and leading to higher future payoffs. Our model predicts that greater internal …
Asymptotic Distribution And Finite-Sample Bias Correction Of Qml Estimators For Spatial Dependence Model, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang
Asymptotic Distribution And Finite-Sample Bias Correction Of Qml Estimators For Spatial Dependence Model, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
In studying the asymptotic and finite sample properties of quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimators for the spatial linear regression models, much attention has been paid to the spatial lag dependence (SLD) model; little has been given to its companion, the spatial error dependence (SED) model. In particular, the effect of spatial dependence on the convergence rate of the QML estimators has not been formally studied, and methods for correcting finite sample bias of the QML estimators have not been given. This paper fills in these gaps. Of the two, bias correction is particularly important to the applications of this model, as …
Limit Theory For Vars With Mixed Roots Near Unity, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ji Hyung Lee
Limit Theory For Vars With Mixed Roots Near Unity, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ji Hyung Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
Limit theory is developed for nonstationary vector autoregression (VAR) with mixed roots in the vicinity of unity involving persistent and explosive components. Statistical tests for common roots are examined and model selection approaches for discriminating roots are explored. The results are useful in empirical testing for multiple manifestations of nonstationarity - in particular for distinguishing mildly explosive roots from roots that are local to unity and for testing commonality in persistence.

Family Ownership And R&D Investment: The Role Of Growth Opportunities And Business Group Membership, Young Rok Choi, Shaker A. Zahra, Toru Yoshikawa, Bong H. Han
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examines whether the influence of family ownership on R&D investment varies depending on growth opportunities and business group membership. Using data on Korean firms over ten years (1998-2007), the study shows that family ownership is negatively related to R&D investment, but the relationship becomes positive when growth opportunities are present. The moderating effect, however, differs between independent family firms and family business groups. The positive influence that growth opportunities have on promoting R&D investment is diminished for affiliates of family business groups. These findings imply that family owners invest more in R&D when their family control goals are …

When e-commerce giant Alibaba went public on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2014, its market capitalisation rocketed to roughly US$219 billion - a sum greater than any record previously set by its American contemporaries, Facebook, eBay and Amazon. It was a historic event that led many to believe that China’s digital economy was echoing the Middle Kingdom’s own meteoric rise onto the world-stage. China ranks high in digital connectivity. In 2015, almost half of the country’s population, or 649 million people, were online. It’s fast-growing Internet economy generates about US$100 billion annually and is predicted to reach US$277 …

Data Mapping On Ageing In Low- And Middle-Income Countries In Asia And The Pacific, Bussarawan Puk Teerawichitchainan, John Knodel
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Population ageing is an increasingly important demographic, social, and economic issue for researchers and policy makers throughout developing Asia prompting a need for data to monitor change and formulate evidence-based policies. There have been increasing endeavors in the Asia-Pacific region to collect information specifically related to older persons through representative surveys. These surveys are either broadly comprehensive or focus on particularly important domains, especially health. However, there is no systematic accounting of what the datasets address; to what extent different sources overlap or complement one another; how comparable they; and what data gaps remain. In addition, other data sources not …
