With a population of 5.4 million and land area of 718 square kilometres, 94 percent of Singapore’s population live in high-rise apartments, of which, 82 percent dwell in public housing. As an ultra-dense city-state, effective and innovative urban development is a social and economic imperative intricately intertwined with Singapore’s competitiveness and quality of life. Harnessing information and communications technology (ICT) is not only essential to achieving this, but also serves as a template for answering some of the global challenges faced by urban centres around the world–particularly in regard to economic development, social cohesion, better city administration and infrastructure management.
Public Relations Practitioners’ Perceptions Of The Use Of Crisis Response Strategies In China, Yang Hu, Augustine Pang
Public Relations Practitioners’ Perceptions Of The Use Of Crisis Response Strategies In China, Yang Hu, Augustine Pang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study seeks to solicit Chinese PR practitioners’ views on the veracity of identified indigenous crisis response strategies (CRSs) and examine the underpinning socio-contextual factors that contribute to the employment of these strategies. Through 20 interviews, the authors found that political power, cultural backgrounds, media nature, public idiosyncrasies, and companies’ problematic status contributed to the use of indigenous strategies of “Barnacle”, “Third-party endorsement” and “Setting up new topics”.

Existing theories of international business and strategy do not fully explain how local knowledge disadvantage faced by foreign investors can be mitigated. We conducted an in-depth qualitative study into four MNCs to investigate the micro-processes of how they generated value from their dispersed sources of local knowledge in China. The results suggest an interactive model: that MNCs employed management processes encompassing three strategically interconnected efforts—global knowledge penetration, local-global knowledge blending, and local-global knowledge integration. The model highlights the interplay between global and local knowledge and challenges extant research that solely focuses on the transfer of either home-based or local knowledge.

Finding And Losing Dad, Seow Hon Tan

This Father's Day, I am reminded of the father I lost in January. He is also the father I found in the last decade as we grew closer. Dad passed away days short of his 68th birthday. He was first diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, or nose cancer, 26 years ago. His last battle during 26 days of hospitalisation, traversing Christmas and New Year's Day, was not with cancer but with pneumonia, possibly resulting from aspiration due to dysphagia, a side effect of neck radiation for cancer.

In 2013 and 2014, I taught two graduate-level summer seminars at South Korea’s Yonsei University Law School. Although English was not their first language, my Korean students participated in class discussions, made oral presentations and sat for an examination — all in English, albeit without the same fluency of my Singaporean students.

What Makes Professors Credible: The Effect Of Demographic Characteristics And Ideological Beliefs, Luke Zhu, Karl Aquino, Abhijeet K. Vadera
What Makes Professors Credible: The Effect Of Demographic Characteristics And Ideological Beliefs, Luke Zhu, Karl Aquino, Abhijeet K. Vadera
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Five studies are conducted to examine how ideology and perceptions regarding gender, race, caste, and affiliation status affect how individuals judge researchers' credibility. Support is found for predictions that individuals judge researcher credibility according to their egalitarian or elitist ideologies and according to status cues including race, gender, caste, and university affiliation. Egalitarians evaluate low-status researchers as more credible than high-status researchers. Elitists show the opposite pattern. Credibility judgments affect whether individuals will interpret subsequent ambiguous events in accordance with the researcher's findings. Effects of diffuse status cues and ideological beliefs may be mitigated when specific status cues are presented …

Widening access promotes student diversity and the appropriate representation of all demographic groups. This study aims to examine diversity-related benefits of the use of situational judgement tests (SJTs) in the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) in terms of three demographic variables: (i) socioeconomic status (SES); (ii) ethnicity, and (iii) gender. Methods: Outcomes in medical and dental school applicant cohorts for the years 2012 (n = 15 581) and 2013 (n = 15 454) were studied. Applicants' scores on cognitive tests and an SJT were linked to SES (parents' occupational status), ethnicity (White versus Black and other minority ethnic candidates), and …
Precautionary Saving With Changing Income Ambiguity, Atsushi Kajii, Jingyi Xue
Precautionary Saving With Changing Income Ambiguity, Atsushi Kajii, Jingyi Xue
Research Collection School Of Economics
We study a two-period saving model where theagent’s future income might be ambiguous. Our agent has a version of the smoothambiguity decision criterion (Klibano, Marinacci and Mukerji (2005)), where theagent’s perception about ambiguity is described by a second-order belief overfirst-order risks. We model increasing ambiguity as a spreading-out of thesecond-order belief. We show that under a “Risk Comonotonicity” condition, ouragent saves more when ambiguity in future income increases. We argue that thecondition is indispensable for our result.
Robust Econometric Inference With Mixed Integrated And Mildly Explosive Regressors, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ji Hyung Lee
Robust Econometric Inference With Mixed Integrated And Mildly Explosive Regressors, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ji Hyung Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper explores in several prototypical models a convenient inference procedure for nonstationary variable regression that enables robust chi-square testing for a wide class of persistent and endogenous regressors. The approach uses the mechanism of self-generated instruments called IVX instrumentation developed by Magdalinos and Phillips (2009b). We first show that these methods remain valid for regressors with local unit roots in the explosive direction and mildly explosive roots, where the roots are further from unity in the explosive direction than 0 (n(-1)). It is also shown that Wald testing procedures remain robust for multivariate regressors with certain forms of mixed …
Uniform Consistency Of Nonstationary Kernel-Weighted Sample Covariances For Nonparametric Regression, Degui Li, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jiti Gao
Uniform Consistency Of Nonstationary Kernel-Weighted Sample Covariances For Nonparametric Regression, Degui Li, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jiti Gao
Research Collection School Of Economics
We obtain uniform consistency results for kernel-weighted sample covariances in a nonstationary multiple regression framework that allows for both fixed design and random design coefficient variation. In the fixed design case these nonparametric sample covariances have different uniform asymptotic rates depending on direction, a result that differs fundamentally from the random design and stationary cases. The uniform asymptotic rates derived exceed the corresponding rates in the stationary case and confirm the existence of uniform super-consistency. The modelling framework and convergence rates allow for endogeneity and thus broaden the practical econometric import of these results. As a specific application, we establish …
Strategic Interactions In A One-Sector Growth Model, Eric Fesselmeyer, Leonard J. Mirman, Marc Santugini
Strategic Interactions In A One-Sector Growth Model, Eric Fesselmeyer, Leonard J. Mirman, Marc Santugini
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
We study the effect of dynamic and investment externalities in a one-sector growth model. In our model, two agents interact strategically in the utilization of capital for consumption, savings, and investment in technical progress. We consider two types of investment choices: complements and substitutes. For each case, we derive the equilibrium and provide the corresponding stationary distribution. We then compare the equilibrium with the social planner's solution.

We used primary data collected from 163 households in an off-grid Rwandan village to provide insights into energy poverty at the household-level. Informed by the rural livelihoods literature, we constructed a novel asset- and income-based index to disaggregate our results by socio-economic status. We also employed microeconometric techniques to investigate the determinants of household willingness-to-pay for electricity. We found statistically significant differences between households of different socio-economic status for expenditure on lighting and other electricity services, willingness-to-pay for electricity, income-generating activities and food security. Overall, our findings suggest that initiatives aiming to end energy poverty and catalyze rural development should: …

Hospital-Skilled Nursing Facility Referral Linkage Reduces Readmission Rates Among Medicare Patients Receiving Major Surgery, Andrew J. Schoenfeld, Xuan Zhang, David C. Grabowski, Vincent Mor, Joel S. Weissman, Momotazur Rahman
Research Collection School Of Economics
BACKGROUND:In the health reform era, rehospitalization after discharge may result in financial penalties to hospitals. The effect of increased hospital-skilled nursing facility (SNF) linkage on readmission reduction after surgery has not been explored.METHODS:To determine whether enhanced hospital-SNF linkage, as measured by the proportion of surgical patients referred from a hospital to a particular SNF, would result in reduced 30-day readmission rates for surgical patients, we used national Medicare data (2011-2012) and evaluated patients who underwent 1 of 5 operative procedures (coronary artery bypass grafting [CABG], hip fracture repair, total hip arthroplasty, colectomy, or lumbar spine surgery). Initial evaluation was performed …
