Innovation, Firm Size Distribution, And Gains From Trade, Yi-Fan Chen, Wen-Tai Hsu, Shin-Kun Peng Sep 2018

Innovation, Firm Size Distribution, And Gains From Trade, Yi-Fan Chen, Wen-Tai Hsu, Shin-Kun Peng

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study a trade model with monopolistic competition a la Melitz (2003) that is standard except that firm heterogeneity is endogenously determined by firms innovating to enhance their productivities. We show that the equilibrium productivity and firm-size distributions exhibit power-law tails under rather general conditions on demand and technology. In particular, the emergence of the power laws is essentially independent of the underlying primitive heterogeneity among firms. We investigate the model’s welfare implications, and conduct a quantitative analysis of welfare gains from trade. We find that, conditional on the same trade elasticity and values of the common parameters, our model …

Aging Suppresses Skin-Derived Circulating Sdf1 To Promote Full-Thickness Tissue Regeneration, Mailyn A. Nishiguchi, Casey A. Spencer, Denis H. Y. Leung, Thomas H. Leung Sep 2018

Aging Suppresses Skin-Derived Circulating Sdf1 To Promote Full-Thickness Tissue Regeneration, Mailyn A. Nishiguchi, Casey A. Spencer, Denis H. Y. Leung, Thomas H. Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

Physicians have observed that surgical wounds in the elderly heal with thinner scars than wounds in young patients. Understanding this phenomenon may reveal strategies for promoting scarless wound repair. We show that full-thickness skin wounds in aged but not young mice fully regenerate. Exposure of aged animals to blood from young mice by parabiosis counteracts this regenerative capacity. The secreted factor, stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF1), is expressed at higher levels in wounded skin of young mice. Genetic deletion of SDF1 in young skin enhanced tissue regeneration. In aged mice, enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) and histone H3 lysine 27 …

Homogeneity Pursuit In Panel Data Models: Theory And Application, Wuyi Wang, Peter C. B. Phillips, Liangjun Su Sep 2018

Homogeneity Pursuit In Panel Data Models: Theory And Application, Wuyi Wang, Peter C. B. Phillips, Liangjun Su

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper studies the estimation of a panel data model with latent structures where individuals can be classified into different groups with the slope parameters being homogeneous within the same group but heterogeneous across groups. To identify the unknown group structure of vector parameters, we design an algorithm called Panel-CARDS. We show that it can identify the true group structure asymptotically and estimate the model parameters consistently at the same time. Simulations evaluate the performance and corroborate the asymptotic theory in several practical design settings. The empirical application reveals the heterogeneous grouping effect of income on democracy.

Geography, Trade And Power-Law Phenomena, Pao-Li Chang, Wen-Tai Hsu Sep 2018

Geography, Trade And Power-Law Phenomena, Pao-Li Chang, Wen-Tai Hsu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article provides a review on the theories of various power-law phenomena related to geography and trade. In particular, we focus our discussion on the gravity equation of trade flows, the power law in firm size, and the link between the two - highlighting the roles of geography and trade in the theoretical modeling. We also discuss how these two power-law phenomena may be related to other power-law phenomena, such as those in income, firm productivity and city size.

Sharing Sequential Values In A Network, Ruben Juarez, Yu Ko Chiu, Jingyi Xue Sep 2018

Sharing Sequential Values In A Network, Ruben Juarez, Yu Ko Chiu, Jingyi Xue

Research Collection School Of Economics

Consider a sequential process where agents have individual values at every possible step. A planner is in charge of selecting steps and distributing the accumulated aggregate values among a number of agents. We model this process by a directed network, whereby each edge is associated with a vector of individual values. This model applies to several new and existing problems, e.g. developing a connected public facility and distributing total values received by surrounding districts, selecting a long-term production project and sharing final profits among partners of a firm, or choosing a machine schedule to serve different tasks and distributing total …

Laozi In Stanford Encyclopedia Of Philosophy, Alan Kam Leung Chan Sep 2018

Laozi In Stanford Encyclopedia Of Philosophy, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Confucianism, Daoism (Taoism), and Buddhism generally name the three main currents of Chinese thought, although it should be obvious that like any “ism,” they are abstractions—what they name are not monolithic but multifaceted traditions with fuzzy boundaries. In the case of “Daoism,” it designates both a philosophical tradition and an organized religion, which in modern Chinese are identified separately as daojia and daojiao, respectively. With their own rich histories and internal differences, the two are deeply intertwined. Laozi (or Lao-tzu, in the “Wade-Giles” system of transliteration favored by earlier generations of Western scholars) figures centrally in both.

Talent Management Strategy As A Catalyst At Singapore Management University (Smu) Libraries, Gulcin Cribb, Rajendra Munoo Aug 2018

Talent Management Strategy As A Catalyst At Singapore Management University (Smu) Libraries, Gulcin Cribb, Rajendra Munoo

Research Collection Library

With almost no natural resources, Singapore’s knowledge-based economy is dependent on its talent. The government has been advocating the critical importance of on-going upskilling of its citizens to become a smart nation in an increasingly Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) world. Its recent SkillsFuture agenda was launched in 2016 to provide Singaporeans with the opportunities to develop their fullest potential throughout life. Universities are expected to support this initiative and provide industry specific education to build a competitive workforce that is based on a tripartite collaboration between government, industry and universities. Singapore Management University (SMU) too, has responded and …

Dare You 'Outsource' Your Library Freshmen Orientation To Student Facilitators? Why We Are Roaring About It At Singapore Management University Libraries, Redzuan Abdullah

Research Collection Library

Libraries are constantly seeking opportunities to evolve their library orientations in order to be more engaging and collaborative with students. In the lead-up to new term, SMU Libraries collaborated with the Office of Student Life (OSL), to pilot a peer-to-peer learning experience where student leaders conducted and facilitated the library orientation programme, which introduces new students to the physical and digital libraries. The trigger for this was the Provost’s Freshmen Experience Taskforce that mandated a review for a more coordinated orientation programme with the different offices and events for freshmen. The library was part of this taskforce that had traditionally …

Technology That Enables, Services That Empower, Yuyun Wirawati Ishak Aug 2018

Technology That Enables, Services That Empower, Yuyun Wirawati Ishak

Research Collection Library

Before 2016, the Library offered two different information desks: one for general/circulation enquiry and one for reference enquiry. The problem at that time was quite glaring: we were to open a new library branch, and if we replicated the information desks, we would have ended up with 4 different information desks, causing constraints in human resources and logistics. The solution seemed obvious: to merge the information desks into a single desk, hence cutting down the needs for staffing. The implementation, however, was not that straightforward. Staff who used to manage circulation enquiry were not comfortable with reference enquiry, and vice versa. …

This report provides a deeper understanding of the food insecurity situation in Singapore. Food insecurity refers to the lack of physical and/or economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. The report sheds light on those experiencing food insecurity and the factors affecting this experience. In addition, it identifies gaps in food support provision and makes recommendations on how these gaps might be filled for a smoother and targeted food support distribution system.

Downside Risk And Stock Returns In The G7 Countries: An Empirical Analysis Of Their Long-Run And Short-Run Dynamics, Cathy Yi-Hsuan Chen, Thomas C. Chiang, Wolfgang Karl Härdle Aug 2018

Downside Risk And Stock Returns In The G7 Countries: An Empirical Analysis Of Their Long-Run And Short-Run Dynamics, Cathy Yi-Hsuan Chen, Thomas C. Chiang, Wolfgang Karl Härdle

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

Any risk-return tradeoff analysis in aggregate equity markets relies on appropriate measures of risk, in most studies based on (co-)variance relations. Consequently, in integrated global markets, country-specific expected return is priced with a world price of covariance risk. This study relates domestic excess stock returns to the world downside risk. Evidence shows that downside tail risk (as a multiplier of volatility) has long memory cointegration properties; hence, the underlying risk aversion behavior in an integrated market is associated with the conditional quantile ratio, the correlation of stock returns, and the cointegrating coefficient of downside risk. Our empirical results based on …

The Informational Role Of Overconfident Ceos, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang Aug 2018

The Informational Role Of Overconfident Ceos, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study how overconfident CEOs communicate with the market and whether this has implications on the firm’s information environment. Textual analysis reveals that overconfident CEOs communicate using less negative tone in their 10K/Q filings. Our evidence suggests that overconfident CEOs provide market participants with more value-relevant information as sell-side analysts make more accurate forecasts of their firm’s future earnings. Consistent with a reduction in asymmetric information, implied cost of equity capital is lower. However, not all investors benefit as the information advantage of short sellers disappears in the stocks of overconfident CEOs.

Tax Knowledge Diffusion Through Individual Auditor Network Ties: Evidence From China, Chee Yeow Lim, Terry Shevlin, Kun Wang, Yanping Xu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study investigates whether network ties via sharing the same individual auditor influences the diffusion of tax avoidance knowledge. We find that firms with greater connection to low-tax firms through audit partners have lower effective tax rates (ETRs), consistent with tax avoidance knowledge being shared among firms through individual auditor network. The influence of audit network ties on tax avoidance at focal firms is stronger when partners’ tenure in low-tax firms is longer, and when partners have social connection with the top executives of focal firms. In addition, audit fees of focal firms with auditor network ties to low-tax firms …

A Dual-Process Team Mood Framework Of Team Creativity, Sean Teck Hao Lee Aug 2018

A Dual-Process Team Mood Framework Of Team Creativity, Sean Teck Hao Lee

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

While it has been recognized that mood can exert a substantive influence on an individual’s level of creativity, much of the creative needs of organizations today are being fulfilled by brainstorming teams rather than individual employees. As such, researchers have begun to examine the effects of mood on creativity in the context of teams. Existing findings, unfortunately, have not been consistent, such that positive mood has been shown to be beneficial towards team creativity at times (e.g., Grawitch, Munz, Elliott, & Mathis, 2003), while at other times being harmful towards team creativity (e.g., Tsai, Chi, Grandey, & Fung, 2012). Similarly, …

Nonstationary Panels With Unobserved Heterogeneity, Wenxin Huang Aug 2018

Nonstationary Panels With Unobserved Heterogeneity, Wenxin Huang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation develops several econometric techniques to address the unobserved heterogeneity in nonstationary panels, namely identifying latent group structures in cointegrated panels, studying nonstationary panels with both cross-sectional dependence and latent group structures, and estimating panel error-correction model with unobserved dynamic common factors.

Chapter 1 considers a panel cointegration model with latent group structures that allows for heterogeneous long-run relations across groups. We extend Su et al. (2013) classifier-Lasso (C-Lasso) method to the nonstationary panels and allow for the presence of endogeneity in both the stationary and nonstationary regressors in the model. In addition, we allow the dimension of the …

The Social Capital-Control Nexus: Lessons From Implementation Of Accounting Control Systems In Two Chinese Organizations, Gary Pan Aug 2018

The Social Capital-Control Nexus: Lessons From Implementation Of Accounting Control Systems In Two Chinese Organizations, Gary Pan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

One common theme of Accounting Control System project failure centers on inadequate or inappropriate enactment of effective controls during project implementation. As Accounting Control Systems projects are viewed by many as a social process involving managing relationships among multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and capabilities, there is a growing number of IS researchers that have utilized the social capital theory to examine the enactment of clan control during system implementation. Despite the growing interests, relatively little is known about the relationships between social capital and the formal as well as informal controls. Also, the moderating impact of social capital attributes …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, listed companies around the world are shifting from short-term goals of maximizing profits to long-term sustainable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. People have come to realize that ESG has become an important source of the corporate risk and may affect the company's financial performance and profitability. Recent research shows that good ESG performance could improve the financial performance in some countries. Yet, the question of how does ESG affect financial performance has not been thoroughly discussed and studied in China. In this article, we study China's listed power generation groups to explore the relationship between ESG performance and …

Running On Empty: Measuring Psychological Dependence In Close Relationships Lacking Satisfaction, Kenneth Tan, Ximenab. Arriaga, Christopher R. Agnew

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Commitment has often been used to examine why individuals unjustifiably persist in relationships that are lacking in or devoid of satisfaction. However, the practicality of using commitment to examine these situations has been questioned because of its substantial association with satisfaction. Across three studies, we created a measure of nonvoluntary dependence and investigated the validity and reliability of the Nonvoluntary Dependence Scale from an investment model perspective. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed evidence of a single factor and reliability analyses revealed good internal reliability for the measure. The new measure also evidenced desirable convergent and discriminant validity with respect …

Historic instrumental weather observations, made on land or at sea from as early as the 17th century (e.g., Camuffo etal., 2010), are integral to extending our understanding of the decadal and centennial variations of Earth’s climate and forcomparison with paleo-proxy data. The potential of such data is shown to best effect when used in dynamical 4D globalreanalyses to reconstruct climate patterns and fluctuations over more than 250 years, improving climate projections and con-tributing to climate change detection and attribution studies. This longer temporal dimension permits the resolution of morerealizations of decadal to multi-decadal climate variations (Bengtsson et al., 2007). The …

Spaces Of The Religious Economy: Negotiating The Regulation Of Religious Space In Singapore, Orlando Woods Aug 2018

Spaces Of The Religious Economy: Negotiating The Regulation Of Religious Space In Singapore, Orlando Woods

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Over the past three decades, the theory of religious economy has been established, applied, debated, developed, and rejected. It has proven to be as divisive as any "general theory" of religion should be, and yet its core tenets continue to engage and unite scholars around the world. In response to broader shifts within the sociology of religion, this article reframes religious economy by advancing a spatial approach to its theorization. A spatial approach can help develop new perspectives on the regulation of religion, and the resistant agency of religious groups. With a focus on the "secular monopoly" of Singapore, it …

Rapid modernization has brought about massive changes in the urban and rural landscapes of China. While many old places and ancient buildings have been pulled down and replaced with more modernalternatives, others have been protected and restored. These include ancient ancestral temples, animportant cultural space in China. Previous research has shown how different level governmentsand rural communities work together to restore ancient temples, but didn’t bring to light artisticand non-government financed and patronized cases of restoration projects. This article adoptsa bottom-up perspective to examine a case in Guangzhou how an individual artist transforms anancient ancestral temple into a new cultural space. …

Gauging Effectiveness: First And Second-Best Policy Design, Ishani Mukherjee, Michael Howlett Aug 2018

Gauging Effectiveness: First And Second-Best Policy Design, Ishani Mukherjee, Michael Howlett

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The essence of policy design resides in the articulation of policy options expected to meet government goals. Not all policies are as well or as carefully formulated as they could be, however, and policy studies has been interested for several decades in understanding why policy alternatives are developed, why some are successfully adopted while others are not and how some policies emerge from carefully crafted formulation processes while others are more heavily influenced by other processes such as political, partisan or electoral or legislative bargaining ( Howlett, 2011 ). Why design occurs and how superior designs can be achieved—either all …

Using Multiple Methods To More Fully Understand Causal Relations: Positive Affect Enhances Social Relationships, Shannon Moore, Ed Diener, Kenneth Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We review research indicating that higher levels of positive affect help produce better social relationships for that person and those around him or her. By better relationships we mean those that are experienced as more pleasant and less aversive, are closer and more supportive, and are long-lasting. We review longitudinal, experimental, experience-sampling, cross-cultural, and other types of evidence that suggest that not only do good relationships produce positive affect, but that positive affect can lead to them as well. We also focus on the mediators that create the association going from positive affect to sociability and high-quality relationships. Finally, we …

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, a science fiction novel much beloved of geeks, has special resonance among those who imagine themselves as visionaries using advanced knowledge to transform society for the better. When the SpaceX rocket launched in early 2018, its unusual payload even included a copy of the Foundation series as a symbolic gesture.
