Global Value Chains And The Cptpp, Pao-Li Chang, Tran Bao Phuong Nguyen Jun 2019

Global Value Chains And The Cptpp, Pao-Li Chang, Tran Bao Phuong Nguyen

SMU Economics and Statistics Working Paper Series

The CPTPP, or the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, is an example of a “mega-regional” free trade agreement, whose provisions on the rules of origin and trade facilitation can have potentially large impacts on the CPTPP-wide supply chains. In this paper, we investigate whether the CPTPP members are key upstream and downstream trade partners to each other in the global value chains. We develop formulas of bilateral upstreamness and downstreamness, based on the gross-export decomposition framework of Koopman, Wang and Wei (2014) and Borin and Mancini (2017). We demonstrate how the decomposition of gross exports can be used …

The Impact Of Entrepreneurial Leadership On Team Climate And Innovation Work Behaviour In Start-Up Contexts, Kin Kah Neo Jun 2019

The Impact Of Entrepreneurial Leadership On Team Climate And Innovation Work Behaviour In Start-Up Contexts, Kin Kah Neo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Achieving start-up success is a multi-dimensional challenge. Against this background, this research centres around the experiences gained at an Asian University with a postgraduate Master of Science in Innovation program (MI) aimed at creating novel and viable business ventures as part of so-called Capstone Projects. Given concerns about the - at times - somewhat mediocre nature of ideation and business model creation outcomes of some of the students’ capstone projects in contrast to a couple of very successful, award-winning innovation projects, emphasis was put on identifying and understanding the type of leadership that drives high-quality new ventures, namely entrepreneurial leadership …

Entrans: Leveraging Kinetic Energy Harvesting Signal For Transportation Mode Detection, Guohao Lan, Weitao Xu, Dong Ma, Sara Khalifa, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Monitoring the daily transportation modes of an individual provides useful information in many application domains, such as urban design, real-time journey recommendation, as well as providing location-based services. In existing systems, accelerometer and GPS are the dominantly used signal sources for transportation context monitoring which drain out the limited battery life of the wearable devices very quickly. To resolve the high energy consumption issue, in this paper, we present EnTrans, which enables transportation mode detection by using only the kinetic energy harvester as an energy-efficient signal source. The proposed idea is based on the intuition that the vibrations experienced by …

Political Discussions In Homogeneous And Cross-Cutting Communication Spaces, Qatar Computing Research Institute, Haewoon Kwak, Universität Bamberg Jun 2019

Political Discussions In Homogeneous And Cross-Cutting Communication Spaces, Qatar Computing Research Institute, Haewoon Kwak, Universität Bamberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, provide users with a rich set of features for sharing and consuming political information, expressing political opinions, and exchanging potentially contrary political views. In such activities, two types of communication spaces naturally emerge: those dominated by exchanges between politically homogeneous users and those that allow and encourage crosscutting exchanges in politically heterogeneous groups. While research on political talk in online environments abounds, we know surprisingly little about the potentially varying nature of discussions in politically homogeneous spaces as compared to cross-cutting communication spaces. To fill this gap, we use Reddit to explore …

View, Like, Comment, Post: Analyzing User Engagement By Topic At 4 Levels Across 5 Social Media Platforms For 53 News Organizations, Kholoud K. Aldous, Jisun An, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We evaluate the effects of the topics of social media posts on audiences across five social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit) at four levels of user engagement. We collected 3,163,373 social posts from 53 news organizations across five platforms during an 8month period. We analyzed the differences in news organization platform strategies by focusing on topic variations by organization and the corresponding effect on user engagement at four levels. Findings show that topic distribution varies by platform, although there are some topics that are popular across most platforms. User engagement levels vary both by topics and …

Buscope: Fusing Individual & Aggregated Mobility Behavior For" Live" Smart City Services, Lakmal Meegahapola, Thivya Kandappu, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Leman Akoglu, Shili Xiang, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While analysis of urban commuting data has a long and demonstrated history of providing useful insights into human mobility behavior, such analysis has been performed largely in offline fashion and to aid medium-to-long term urban planning. In this work, we demonstrate the power of applying predictive analytics on real-time mobility data, specifically the smart-card generated trip data of millions of public bus commuters in Singapore, to create two novel and “live” smart city services. The key analytical novelty in our work lies in combining two aspects of urban mobility: (a) conformity: which reflects the predictability in the aggregated flow of …

Uniquely U: The Effects Of Tertiary Education Disciplines On The Development Of Dual Self-Construals And Its Impact On Conflict Management Tendencies, Wan Yee Choo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

While the effects of self-construal on one’s conflict management tendencies are well-documented, the effects of dual self-construals on conflict management tendencies are under-explored. In present paper, two studies were conducted to explore how tertiary education disciplines could influence the development of dual self-construals among Singaporeans which, in turn, determine their conflict management tendencies, as well as, how context influences the switch of different self-construals and conflict management styles. Our findings revealed that individuals from business disciplines displayed greater competitive conflict management tendencies than their peers from social science disciplines and this relationship is mediated by their endorsement of independent self-construal. …

I Want To Be Busy: Instrumental Regulation Of Busyness Among Conscientious Individuals, Brandon Koh Jun 2019

I Want To Be Busy: Instrumental Regulation Of Busyness Among Conscientious Individuals, Brandon Koh

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

A sense of busyness, the subjective feeling of having a long and effortful work schedule, is increasingly prevalent in today’s societies. Although people commonly feel busy because of externally imposed work pressures, the motivated self-regulation perspective suggests that people might intentionally put themselves in a busy state for instrumental reasons. Grounded in the instrumental emotion regulation framework, this research theorizes that people instrumentally regulate themselves to experience busyness – a negative affect – to facilitate a performance motive. In other words, people might desire to feel busyness despite its unpleasant hedonic tone in order to attain higher performance. Results from …

Essays On Human Capital, Growth And Innovation: Political Economy Perspective, Di Sima Jun 2019

Essays On Human Capital, Growth And Innovation: Political Economy Perspective, Di Sima

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The dissertation explores the role of human capital, education, and political institutions in the process of economic and political development. The first chapter shows that economic development such as secondary school enrollment rates during the democratization period exerts long-lasting effects on growth, possibly by giving permanent birthmarks to newly minted democratic institutions. Specifically, democracies born in weak development tend to have weak institutions and slow growth, while in contrast, those with adequate development at the political transition time establish strong institutions and achieve faster growth. The second chapter explores the effect of curriculum control in schooling on national innovation and …

Reappraisal And Savoring As Mediators Of The Effect Of Informal Mindfulness Practice On Well-Being, Yan Qiang Tan Jun 2019

Reappraisal And Savoring As Mediators Of The Effect Of Informal Mindfulness Practice On Well-Being, Yan Qiang Tan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Although extensive research has been conducted on the effects of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), the processes through which MBIs affects well-being are still unclear. Furthermore, most of the current mindfulness research has focused on formal mindfulness practice. I aim to contribute to the field by studying the effects of informal mindfulness practice delivered through a mobile application in a two-week experience sampling study. Well-being was examined at three levels: immediately after completing an informal mindfulness exercise, at the end-of-the-day, and retrospective assessments of the two-week intervention period. I examined two possible mediators of the effect of the MBI on well-being: reappraisal …

Institutional Management And Institutional Trading, Jingi Ha Jun 2019

Institutional Management And Institutional Trading, Jingi Ha

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of three papers in mutual fund governance or market microstructure that analyze the causal effect of board independence on mutual fund performance or the trading behavior of institutional trading and informed trading.

Chapter I studies how board independence affects fund performance, in relation to investment experience of independent directors. Using the SEC amendment in 2001 as an exogenous shock, I find that board independence does not improve or damage fund performance on average. When a fund board has independent directors with investment experience, however, it boosts fund performance. I also find that a fund manager is less …

Singapore's Latest Efforts At Regulating Online Hate Speech, Siyuan Chen, Chen Wei Chia Jun 2019

Singapore's Latest Efforts At Regulating Online Hate Speech, Siyuan Chen, Chen Wei Chia

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The introduction of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) has been generating considerable debate and feedback. Some of the concerns raised include whether the bill unduly restricts the freedom of expression. In focusing on the hate speech provisions of the POFMA, this legislation comment situates the criticisms within the larger framework of international human rights law and international practices and proposes some ways forward to improve the regulatory framework for online hate speech.

Applicability Of Lean Production Principles To Performance Analysis Across The Life Cycle Phases Of Buildings, Clayton Miller, Clayton Miller Jun 2019

Applicability Of Lean Production Principles To Performance Analysis Across The Life Cycle Phases Of Buildings, Clayton Miller, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The Lean Production framework was pioneered by the Toyota Motor Corporation as a method for improving process and product quality and it has proven effective within multiple domains such as manufacturing, management, healthcare, and government. Numerous studies have shown that quality control and performance evaluation in the building industry could be significantly improved as many facilities fail to deliver the anticipated performance that designers and owners expect. This paper qualitatively investigates a Lean-focused framework in the context of building performance analysis and verification. Ideally this approach could empower building designers and operators with the ability to practice “kaizen”, or quality …

Understanding Pro-Environmental Intentions By Integrating Insights From Social Mobility, Cosmopolitanism, And Social Dominance, Angela K. Y. Leung, Brandon Koh Jun 2019

Understanding Pro-Environmental Intentions By Integrating Insights From Social Mobility, Cosmopolitanism, And Social Dominance, Angela K. Y. Leung, Brandon Koh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

To offer an integrative account bridging individuals’ sociocultural orientations with pro-environmentalism, the current research tested the mediating and moderating relationships among pro-environmental intentions and three person-level factors: perceived social mobility, cosmopolitan orientation, and social dominance orientation (SDO). With a Singaporean college student sample (N = 220), we found support for the hypothesized second-stage moderation model that perceived social mobility positively predicts cosmopolitan orientation, and in turn, cosmopolitan orientation is moderated by SDO to positively predict pro-environmental intentions. Specifically, lower levels of SDO strengthen the pro-environmental advantages of endorsing higher levels of cosmopolitan orientation. These findings add novel knowledge to the …

Marginal Cost Of Risk-Based Capital And Risk-Taking, Tao Chen, Jing Rong Goh, Shinichi Kamiya, Pingyi Lou Jun 2019

Marginal Cost Of Risk-Based Capital And Risk-Taking, Tao Chen, Jing Rong Goh, Shinichi Kamiya, Pingyi Lou

Research Collection School Of Economics

We explore the impact of capital adequacy requirements on financial institutions' risk-taking behavior from a novel perspective. Specifically, we show that an important feature of the risk-based capital (RBC) system a built-in diversification benefit in aggregating risk categories induces moral hazard. We find that insurers that face lower marginal RBC costs of fixed-income (FI) investment tend to purchase riskier Fl securities. This relationship holds even when lower marginal RBC costs result from increased risk in other risk categories, which is an unintended consequence of the RBC's square root rule. Using Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy as exogenous shocks to the RBC …

Tort Law, Amirthalingam Kumaralingam, Gary Kok Yew Chan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There were over 40 torts cases in 2019, of which just over half involved the tort of negligence. Unlike previous years, this year's review will deal only with the ten most significant judgments. A full list of torts cases is included at the end of this chapter for the convenience of readers. Of the ten cases, not surprisingly, five of them are claims in negligence. Of these, three involve medical negligence and two involve negligent misrepresentation causing economic loss. The remaining cases relate to claims under the tort of conspiracy, defamation, fraud (or deceit), malicious falsehood as well as nuisance …

Singapore As A Centre For International Commercial Litigation: Party Autonomy To The Fore, Adeline Chong, Man Yip Jun 2019

Singapore As A Centre For International Commercial Litigation: Party Autonomy To The Fore, Adeline Chong, Man Yip

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article considers two recent developments in Singapore private international law: the establishment of the Singapore International Commercial Court and the enactment of the Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements 2005 into Singapore law. These two developments are part of Singapore’s strategy to promote itself as an international dispute resolution hub and are underscored by giving an enhanced role to party autonomy. This article examines the impact of these two developments on the traditional rules of private international law and whether they achieve the stated aim of positioning Singapore as a major player in the international litigation arena.

Restitution, Man Yip Jun 2019

Restitution, Man Yip

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The year 2018 produced only a handful of cases on the law of unjust enrichment and restitution. However, two are seminal cases and of note to the entire common law world: Ochroid Trading Ltd v Chua Siok Lui1 (“Ochroid”) and Turf Club Auto Emporium Pte Ltd v Yeo Boong Hua2 (“Turf Club”). Ochroid dealt with the hotly debated topic of the illegality defence against a claim in unjust enrichment for the recovery of money paid pursuant to an illegal contract. Rejecting the newly formulated Patel v Mirza3 approach under English law, the Court of Appeal in Ochroid set Singapore law …

Singapore Court Of Appeal Affirms Party Autonomy In Choice Of Court Agreements, Tiong Min Yeo Jun 2019

Singapore Court Of Appeal Affirms Party Autonomy In Choice Of Court Agreements, Tiong Min Yeo

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

“The Singapore Court of Appeal has recently affirmed the significance of giving effect to party autonomy in the enforcement of choice of court agreements under the common law in three important decisions handed down in quick succession, on different aspects of the matter: the legal effect of exclusive choice of court agreements, the interpretation and effect of non-exclusive choice of court agreements, and the effect of exclusive choice of court agreements on anti-suit injunctions.

Cross-Cultural Media Effects Research, Jinhee Kim, Kimin Eom Jun 2019

Cross-Cultural Media Effects Research, Jinhee Kim, Kimin Eom

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Despite the substantial development of media effects research, one critical dimension, cultures, has not been actively examined. Most of the theoretical accounts have been derived from Western thought systems, and relevant empirical studies have been conducted mostly in the U.S. or Western Europe. Except for the areas of advertising and health campaigning, very little media effects research has used a cross-cultural framework. In this chapter, we review scholarly work that compares and contrasts portrayals of media messages and their uses/effects/processes of one culture with those from a different culture. Cultures are often equated with national groups, but concept of cultures …

Legal Area Classification: A Comparative Study Of Text Classifiers On Singapore Supreme Court Judgments, Jerrold Soh, How Khang Lim, Ian Ernst Chai Jun 2019

Legal Area Classification: A Comparative Study Of Text Classifiers On Singapore Supreme Court Judgments, Jerrold Soh, How Khang Lim, Ian Ernst Chai

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This paper conducts a comparative study on the performance of various machine learning(“ML”) approaches for classifying judgments into legal areas. Using a novel dataset of 6,227 Singapore Supreme Court judgments, we investigate how state-of-the-art NLP methods compare against traditional statistical models when applied to a legal corpus that comprised few but lengthy documents. All approaches tested, including topic model, word embedding, and language model-based classifiers, performed well with as little as a few hundred judgments. However, more work needs to be done to optimize state-of-the-art methods for the legal domain.

Public And Private Enforcement Of Corporate And Securities Laws: An Empirical Comparison Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Wai Yee Wan, Christopher C. H. Chen, Say H. Goo Jun 2019

Public And Private Enforcement Of Corporate And Securities Laws: An Empirical Comparison Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Wai Yee Wan, Christopher C. H. Chen, Say H. Goo

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Current scholarship emphasises the correlation between enforcement of corporate and securities laws and strong capital markets. Yet, the issue of how private and public enforcement may achieve the objectives of compensation and optimal deterrence remains controversial. While enforcement strategies have been studied extensively in the US and the UK, comparatively less attention is placed on Asia, where concentrated shareholdings are the norm. This study fills the gap by focusing on Hong Kong and Singapore, two leading international financial centres in Asia. Post Asian financial crisis of 1997, Hong Kong and Singapore have changed their laws to strengthen the private enforcement …

China’S Free Trade Agreement Approach To Intellectual Property: The Future Of China’S Rules Under The Belt And Road Initiative [In Chinese], Heng Wang, Zhenyu Xiao

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Intellectual property rules have played an increasingly important role in international trade. Due to the problem in multilateral negotiations, free trade agreements (FTAs) of the US and EU may profoundly shape the future of world intellectual property law. The article analyses the following questions: what are the Chinese, US and EU approach to intellectual property under FTAs? Will China develop its own FTA model on intellectual property? On the one hand, the US and EU have developed their FTA model and is featured with WTO-plus obligations and stringent enforcement. They largely converge despite differences in areas such as geographical indications. …
