Incorporating A Reverse Logistics Scheme In A Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking Network: A Modelling Approach, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Aldy Gunawan, Panca Jodiawan, Vincent F. Yu Apr 2020

Incorporating A Reverse Logistics Scheme In A Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking Network: A Modelling Approach, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Aldy Gunawan, Panca Jodiawan, Vincent F. Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reverse logistics has been implemented by various companies because of its ability to gain more profit and maintain the competitiveness of the company. However, extensive studies on the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking (VRPCD) only considered the forward flow instead of the reverse flow. Motivated by the ability of a VRPCD network to minimize the distribution cost in the forward flow, this research incorporates the reverse logistics scheme in a VRPCD network, namely the VRP with reverse cross-docking (VRP-RCD). We propose a VRP-RCD mathematical model for a four-level supply chain network that involves suppliers, cross-dock, customers, and outlets. The main …

A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Cardiac Hospital-To-Home Transitional Care Program In A Singapore Academic Medical Center, Yanying @ Tan Yanying Chen, Yi Jin Tan, Ya Sun, Cheng Zhan Chua

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

BackgroundRehospitalizations are common in healthcare. They are costly for hospitals and patients and a substantial percentage are preventable, partly because hospital-to-community transitions are often unmanaged or poorly managed. In this study, we conducted a pragmatic randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a new nurse–practitioner-led transitional care program called CareHub, piloted in Singapore’s National University Hospital.MethodsStudy population included all eligible cardiac patients admitted between July 2016 and November 2016. Patients were followed for six months post-discharge. Primary outcomes other than emergency department visits were all cardiac-related: number of readmissions, specialist visits, emergency department visits, and total days readmitted. Secondary …

Boosting Creative Ideation Through Improving Self-Regulation, Sean Teck Hao Lee Apr 2020

Boosting Creative Ideation Through Improving Self-Regulation, Sean Teck Hao Lee

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Although creative ideation requires deviating sufficiently from conventional thoughts, people tend to fixate on highly salient and accessible concepts when responding to idea generation tasks. Surmounting such a default tendency then, is crucial to generating creative ideas. Bridging creative cognition with self-regulation research, I hypothesized that inhibitory control over such a default response may require self-regulatory resources. This would suggest that interventions that increase people’s self-regulatory resources may also boost their creativity. However, results from Study 1 did not support this hypothesis. Specifically, there was no significant difference between ego-depleted versus non-depleted participants in terms of inhibitory control over salient …

The Benefits Of Exhibiting Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Reducing Supervisors’ Work-Family Conflict, Jacky Jiang Apr 2020

The Benefits Of Exhibiting Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Reducing Supervisors’ Work-Family Conflict, Jacky Jiang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The benefits of family-supportive supervisor behavior (FSSB) for subordinates’ work and family outcomes have been the focus of previous studies, but little research has examined the positive impact of FSSB on supervisors’ family outcomes. To address this research gap and contribute to the leader and family literature, the negative relationship between FSSB and work-to-family conflict (WFC) is examined in this study, focusing on the mediating role of personal skill development. In addition, I propose that emotional exhaustion moderates the main effect of FSSB on personal skill development and the indirect effect of FSSB on WFC via personal skill development. A …

Policy Impact Evaluations On Labour And Health, Junxing Chay Apr 2020

Policy Impact Evaluations On Labour And Health, Junxing Chay

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of three chapters that evaluate the impacts of public policies on labour and health.

The first chapter studies a wage supplement scheme in Singapore, called the Workfare Income Supplement, which targets older low-income workers. I exploit differences in maximum benefits across age and over time to find that increasing benefits generosity encourages labour market participation and selfemployment. I also find improved life satisfaction and happiness among those with low education, who are likely to be eligible for the scheme. These results suggest that wage supplements can ease some burdens of an ageing population.

The second chapter investigates …

Essays On Nonstationary Econometrics, Yanbo Liu Apr 2020

Essays On Nonstationary Econometrics, Yanbo Liu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

My dissertation consists of three essays that contribute new theoretical results to robust inference procedures and machine learning algorithms in nonstationary models.

Chapter 2 compares OLS and GLS in autoregressions with integrated noise terms. Grenander and Rosenblatt (2008) gave sufficient conditions for the asymptotic equivalence of GLS and OLS in deterministic trend extraction. However when extending to univariate autoregression model yt = ρnyt−1 + ut , ρn = 1 + c nα , ut = ut−1 + t , and t is one iid disturbance term with zero expectation and σ 2 variance, the asymptotic equivalence no longer holds. Under …

Essays On A Mechanism Design Approach To The Problem Of Bilateral Trade And Public Good Provision, Cuiling Zhang Apr 2020

Essays On A Mechanism Design Approach To The Problem Of Bilateral Trade And Public Good Provision, Cuiling Zhang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The dissertation consists of three chapters which studies a mechanism design approach to the problem of bilateral trade and public good provision.

Chapter 1 characterizes mechanisms satisfying Bayesian incentive compatibility (BIC) and interim individual rationality (IIR) in the classical public good provision problem. We propose a stress test for the results in the standard continuum type space by subject- ing them to a finite type space. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a set of techniques that allow us to characterize the efficient and optimal mechanisms in a discrete setup. Using these techniques, we conclude that many …

Three Essays On Nonstationary Time Series Econometrics, Yiu Lim Lui Apr 2020

Three Essays On Nonstationary Time Series Econometrics, Yiu Lim Lui

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation comprises three papers that separately study different nonstationary time series models.

The first paper, titled as "The Grid Bootstrap for Continuous Time Models", is a joint work with Professor Jun Yu and Professor Weilin Xiao. It considers the grid bootstrap for constructing confidence intervals for the persistence parameter in a class of continuous-time models driven by a Lévy process. Its asymptotic validity is discussed under the assumption that the sampling interval (h) shrinks to zero, the time span (N) goes to infinity or both. Its improvement over the in-fill asymptotic theory is achieved by expanding the coefficient-based statistic …

Essays On Empirical Asset Pricing, Liyao Wang Apr 2020

Essays On Empirical Asset Pricing, Liyao Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The dissertation consists of four chapters on empirical asset pricing. The first chapter reexamines the existence of time-series momentum. Time-series momentum (TSM) refers to the predictability of the past 12-month return on the next one month return. Using the same data set as Moskowitz, Ooi, and Pedersen (2012) (MOP, henceforth), we show that asset-by-asset time-series regressions reveal little evidence of TSM, both in- and out-of-sample. While the t -statistic in a pooled regression appears large, it is not statistically reliable as it is less than the critical values of parametric and nonparametric bootstraps. From an investment perspective, the performance of …

Global Guide: Measures Adopted To Support Businesses Through The Covid-19 Crisis: Singapore, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez Apr 2020

Global Guide: Measures Adopted To Support Businesses Through The Covid-19 Crisis: Singapore, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

After the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Singapore Government responded with a quick and comprehensive package of legal, economic and financial measures that sought to put the economy into hibernation and avoid the destruction of jobs and viable businesses, at least while companies were unable to generate revenues and cash-flows due to a variety of factors, including travel restrictions and lockdowns imposed in many countries around the world. To that end, the Government spent SGD$97.3 billion (that is, around 20% of the country’s GDP) to support businesses, households and employees. Most of this financial support was given in the …

Time For Singapore To Address Some Uncomfortable Questions On Its Migrant Workers, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan discussed the need for Singapore to address some uncomfortable questions on migrant workers and to safeguard their wellbeing and interests as well as to protect the rest of the community. He opined that even as we attend to the first order of business to suppress the many Covid-19 clusters in the dormitories, there are broader questions for our society to address based on an honest and thorough appraisal. Assoc Prof Tan believes that a failure to do so might result in us merely tackling the symptoms, and not the causes, …

Sing Hallelujah To The Lord: Secular Christianities On Hong Kong's Civic Square, Justin Kh Tse Apr 2020

Sing Hallelujah To The Lord: Secular Christianities On Hong Kong's Civic Square, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I was in Chicago on June 12, 2019 when my friend, a Christian theologian from Hong Kong, sent me a Facebook Live video of Civic Square, the site outside the government offices that got its name from a 2012 protest against a bill to revise Hong Kong’s education curriculum to feature nationalistic Chinese themes. Civic Square was also where the 2014 Umbrella Movement began. The crowd that gathered there in June of last year was singing the evangelical chorus "Sing Hallelujah to the Lord." The word on the street, my friend said, was that Christians were trying to calm the …

Why Do Cosmopolitan Individuals Tend To Be More Pro-Environmentally Committed? The Mediating Pathways Via Knowledge Acquisition And Emotional Affinity Toward Nature, Kenichi Ito, Angela K. Y. Leung, Tengjiao Huang Apr 2020

Why Do Cosmopolitan Individuals Tend To Be More Pro-Environmentally Committed? The Mediating Pathways Via Knowledge Acquisition And Emotional Affinity Toward Nature, Kenichi Ito, Angela K. Y. Leung, Tengjiao Huang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Past research offered evidence that cosmopolitan individuals behave more pro-environmentally. The current study systematically examined two mechanisms explaining why. One the one hand, cosmopolitan individuals acquire knowledge about global challenges concerning environmental crises and become aware of mitigating strategies. On the other hand, cosmopolitan individuals extend their prosociality beyond humankind and develop an emotional affinity toward the natural environment. We set out to provide the first empirical support for these cognitive and emotive pathways accounting for why cosmopolitan individuals tend to be more environmentally friendly. We recruited a total of 1,159 participants to systematically investigate the simultaneous mediation of cognitive …

Free Bodies, Segmented Selves: Paradoxical Spaces Of Dancehall Culture In Singapore, Orlando Woods Apr 2020

Free Bodies, Segmented Selves: Paradoxical Spaces Of Dancehall Culture In Singapore, Orlando Woods

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper contributes to the ongoing expansion of the geographies of encounter by considering how cultural encounters can lead to the realisation, and the segmentation, of the self. As much as cultural differences can be manifested, negotiated and managed externally, so too can these differences be internal states that are realised through engagements with the embodied self. Accordingly, segmented selves are an outcome of the desire for individuals to compartmentalise diverse and disaggregated lives, and to retain a sense of cohesion and harmony within the various socio-cultural communities to which they belong. I bring these ideas to life through an …

Reputation Cues As Signals In The Sharing Economy, Sonny Rosenthal, Jean Yi Colette Tan, Ting Fang Poh Apr 2020

Reputation Cues As Signals In The Sharing Economy, Sonny Rosenthal, Jean Yi Colette Tan, Ting Fang Poh

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Reputation cues, like star ratings, signal qualities of service providers in the sharing economy and may affect user behavior. Guided by concepts from signaling theory and using a repeated measures experiment (N = 221), this study manipulated the level of star ratings of ride sharing drivers. Intuitive findings are perceived service quality and willingness to use the service provider are higher when the star rating is high versus low. Extending prior work, perceived service quality mediates the effect of reputation on willingness, explaining 83% of the total effect. Also, the direct effect of reputation cues on perceived service quality depends, …

Sensible Politics: Expanding From Visual Ir To Multisensory Politics, William A. Callahan Apr 2020

Sensible Politics: Expanding From Visual Ir To Multisensory Politics, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

One of the exciting trends in the study of international relations is the growing appreciation of the visual in global politics. It builds on path-breaking work on aesthetics and IR (see Bleiker 2012, Shapiro 2014), to examine how images shape our view of the world, especially in our post-literate age where people primarily get their information about international affairs from visual media. As we saw with the photograph of the dead toddler Alan Kurdi during Europe’s migration crisis in 2015, iconic photographs can put issues on the global policy agenda, even provoking Angela Merkel to allow over one million refugees …

A Global Regression Method For Thermal Sharpening Of Urban Land Surface Temperatures From Modis And Landsat, James. W. Wang, Winston T. L. Chow, Yi-Chen Wang Apr 2020

A Global Regression Method For Thermal Sharpening Of Urban Land Surface Temperatures From Modis And Landsat, James. W. Wang, Winston T. L. Chow, Yi-Chen Wang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Land surface temperatures (LST) in urban landscapes are typically more heterogeneous than can be monitored by the spatial resolution of satellite-based thermal infrared sensors. Thermal sharpening (TS) methods permit the disaggregation of LST based on finer-grained multispectral information, but there is continued debate over which spectral indices are most appropriate for urban TS, and how they should be configured in a predictive regression framework. In this study, we evaluate the stability of various TS kernels with respect to LST at different spatial (Landsat 8) and diurnal (MODIS) scales, and present a new TS method, global regression for urban thermal sharpening …

In Singapore, Laws Are Necessary For Trickle-Down Policies To Work, Tan K. B. Eugene Apr 2020

In Singapore, Laws Are Necessary For Trickle-Down Policies To Work, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan discussed the necessity for laws in order for trickle-down policies to work. He explained that while the three-in-one Unity, Resilience, and Solidarity Budgets demonstrate the resolve of Singapore to ensure businesses and households are helped amid the public health concerns and the economic fallout of the COVID-19 global pandemic, self-seeking behaviour can undermine well-intended measures as trickle down outcomes end up not materialising. However, he noted that laws have their limitations too, and concluded that an internally driven mode of compliance could be far more effective.

Equal Treatment Of Shareholders Under The Dual Class Share Structure: Recent Updates Of The Takeover Code In Singapore, Chuanman You

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

On 24 January 2019, a revised Singapore Code on Take-overs and Mergers (the Take-overs Code) was promulgated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on the advice of the Securities Industry Council (the SIC). The revisions are to ensure that takeover practices targeting at companies with the dual class share (DCS) structures are conducted in compliance with the principle of equal treatment of all shareholders. The key amendments are two-fold: (a) expanding the application of mandatory offer and its dispensation to target companies with the DCS structures. (b) clarifying the fair pricing norms for multiple classes of equity share capital …

The Spatial Subversions Of Global Citizenship Education: Negotiating Imagined Inclusions And Everyday Exclusions In International Schools In China, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong Apr 2020

The Spatial Subversions Of Global Citizenship Education: Negotiating Imagined Inclusions And Everyday Exclusions In International Schools In China, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In recent years, schools around the world have started to adopt curriculums that attempt to transform students into “global” citizens. Global citizenship education is, however, a homogenising abstraction that has been cri- ticised for reflecting and reproducing (neo)liberal Western values; as such, it can be undermined by its delivery and everyday applications in non-Western contexts. This problem is pronounced in international schools, and is especially pronounced in China. By exploring the spatial subversions of international schools in China, this paper offers a new way of understanding the problems associated with delivering global citizenship education, and constructing global citizens. It draws …

The Covid-19 Challenge: An Update From Singapore, Richard Raymond Smith

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

While Singapore was the location of the film Crazy Rich Asians, a more current view of the city-state might be better described as Crazy Vigilant Singaporeans! The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world, yet the preparation, rapid response, and overall vigilance of the universities and the government in Singapore is worth noting. In fact, the World Health Organization has stated that Singapore is the “Gold Standard” for managing a pandemic. From the view of a business school in Singapore, the challenge can be viewed in phases.

Mobilizing private finance for renewable energy and energy efficiency is critical for Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) not only for the reduction of global temperature rise but also for meeting fast-growing energy demand. Two-thirds of green bonds issued in ASEAN were used to finance renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. This paper provides a review of green bond issuance and green bond policies in ASEAN. Issuance of green bonds in top three green bond issuing countries in ASEAN, i.e. Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, are reviewed in detail. Green bond policies in ASEAN are effective in promoting green bond issuance. …

Kernel-Based Inference In Time-Varying Coefficient Cointegrating Regression, Degui Li, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jiti Gao Apr 2020

Kernel-Based Inference In Time-Varying Coefficient Cointegrating Regression, Degui Li, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jiti Gao

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper studies nonlinear cointegrating models with time-varying coefficients and multiple nonstationary regressors using classic kernel smoothing methods to estimate the coefficient functions. Extending earlier work on nonstationary kernel regression to take account of practical features of the data, we allow the regressors to be cointegrated and to embody a mixture of stochastic and deterministic trends, complications which result in asymptotic degeneracy of the kernel-weighted signal matrix. To address these complications new local and global rotation techniques are introduced to transform the covariate space to accommodate multiple scenarios of induced degeneracy. Under regularity conditions we derive asymptotic results that differ …

Considered one of the deadliest incidents in the history of aviation crises and labelled a “continuing mystery,” the ongoing search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 offers no closure. With endless media attention, and negative reactions of stakeholders to every decision made by the airline, this study investigates the types of emotions found in social media posted by publics to the MH370 search suspension announcement. It content analyzed 5,062 real-time tweet messages guided by the revised integrated crisis mapping model. Our findings indicated that, in addition to the four original emotions posited, there was a fifth emotion because of …

Foreign Direct Investment And Industrial Agglomeration: Evidence From China, Wen-Tai Hsu, Yi Lu, Xuan Luo, Lianming Zhu Apr 2020

Foreign Direct Investment And Industrial Agglomeration: Evidence From China, Wen-Tai Hsu, Yi Lu, Xuan Luo, Lianming Zhu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper studies the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on industrial ag-glomeration. Using the differential effects of FDI deregulation in 2002 in China on different industries, we find that FDI actually affects industrial agglomeration neg-atively. As FDI brings technological spillovers and various agglomeration benefits, other forces must be at work to drive our empirical finding. We propose a simple theory that FDI may discourage industrial agglomeration due to fiercer competition pressure. We find various evidence on this competition mechanism. We also examine an alternative theory based on spatial political competition, but find no evidence sup-porting it. On industrial growth, …

Robust Estimation And Inference Of Spatial Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang Apr 2020

Robust Estimation And Inference Of Spatial Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

It is well established that the quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimation of the spatial regression models is generally inconsistent under unknown cross-sectional heteroskedasticity (CH) and the CH-robust methods have been developed. The same issue remains for the spatial panel data (SPD) models but the similar studies based on QML approach do not seem to have been carried out. This paper focuses on the SPD model with fixed effects (FE). We argue that under unknown CH the QML estimator for the SPD-FE model is inconsistent in general, but there are ‘special cases’ where it may remain consistent although the exact conditions …
