Structural Control - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson

Data Curation Profiles Directory

The researcher interviewed for this data curation profile is an earthquake engineer who is studying devices that can reduce the response of buildings during earthquakes. Specifically, the objective of this project is to develop design methodologies that are suitable for structures that have control devices in them. She uses a method called “real-time hybrid testing” to validate the performance of the design methodologies and their dampers. The overall goal is to create a mathematical model for the magnetorheological damper whose results can be compared with results from physical tests. The data management needs concern refitting the data into the NEES …

Soil Ecology - University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Melissa Cragin, Marina Kogan, Aaron Collie

Data Curation Profiles Directory

The data set presented in this data curation profile comes from the field of soil science. The researcher studies soil ecology and organic matter, more specifically, sustainable agriculture and understanding the impact of various treatments on soil fertility. The data management needs involve making the data available in multiple formats, preserving the data indefinitely, and providing access to analytical and visualization tools and web APIs. There are some privacy and confidentiality concerns regarding making the data accessible because some content (e.g., geographic information system data) could potentially identify land owners or other individuals who are responsible for the soil. Additionally, …

Japanese Science Fiction And Conceptions Of The (Human) Subject, Maria Poulaki Sep 2010

Japanese Science Fiction And Conceptions Of The (Human) Subject, Maria Poulaki

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Japanese Science Fiction and Conceptions of the (Human) Subject" Maria Poulaki discusses the crisis that almost all essentialist categorizations have been facing in late modernity, in the context of which science fiction texts offer fertile ground to investigate the transitions brought about with the intensified invasion of the "human self" by its "nonhuman other." The analysis of a Japanese science fiction film draws a seemingly paradoxical connection between the Japanese version of modernity and self-identity with the relevant "Western" articulations found in the work of Bruno Latour and Alain Badiou. This connection points at a broader re-conceptualization …

Strengthening Biblical Historicity Vis-À-Vis Minimalism, 1992-2008, Part 1: Introducing A Bibliographic Essay In Five Parts, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk Sep 2010

Strengthening Biblical Historicity Vis-À-Vis Minimalism, 1992-2008, Part 1: Introducing A Bibliographic Essay In Five Parts, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Research Publications

This is the first in a series of five articles which cover one aspect of a debate in biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies. In question is the historical reliability of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Historical/biblical minimalism, the side in the debate which finds the Hebrew Bible almost completely unreliable as a source for history, has already received substantial bibliographic treatment. Therefore, this series attempts to provide balance by covering the literature in support of historical reliability.

These articles focus not on modern histories of ancient Israel, but rather, publications related to the historicity of the non-miraculous assertions and …

Pain And Mourning In Vogel's Baltimore Waltz And Lavery's Last Easter, Catalina Florina Florescu Sep 2010

Pain And Mourning In Vogel's Baltimore Waltz And Lavery's Last Easter, Catalina Florina Florescu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Pain and Mourning in Vogel's Baltimore Waltz and Lavery's Last Easter" Catalina Florina Florescu argues that there is something of a contrapuntal, contradictory nature when a person lives with or visits someone who spends most of his days in bed. Sitting next to a patient, his attendee faces the burdensome ticking of clocks, the ache of waiting, and the dagger-piercing questions of one's meaning. In other words, it is not only the pain of the other that intrigues and baffles us. It is also narrating and performing our reactions to that pain. In Florescu's reading, the focus …
