Work-Family Predictors Of Parenting Outcomes, Marian L. Troutman

The purpose of the present study was to examine the direct relationship between stress (i.e., economic strain and work-family conflict) and parenting outcomes (i.e., parenting satisfaction, authoritative parenting and authoritarian parenting), and how social support moderates the relationship between the two predictors (i.e., work-family conflict and economic strain) and the three parenting outcomes. Participants included 135 parents who were workers. They completed questionnaires that assessed work-family conflict, economic strain, social support, parenting satisfaction and parenting style. Athletic trainers in leadership positions within the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) have the ability and the responsibility to influence the profession of athletic training. The purpose of this study was to assess the self-reported leadership practices, according to the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), for certified athletic trainers (ATC) in leadership positions within the NATA and to examine differences and relationships in LPI scores and demographics. Methods Of Detecting Differential Item Functioning: A Comparison Of Confirmatory Factor Analysis Methods, Jenny Chia Yi Kuang

The present Monte Carlo study compared four confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) methods for detecting differential item functioning (DIF). The four methods were the noniterative and iterative mean and covariance structure analysis (MACS) methods, the modification index (MI) method, and the modification index-divided sample (MI-divided) method. Reference and focal groups responded to 12 items with 3 of the 12 items designed to exhibit DIF. Sample sizes of 250 and 500 were examined. In addition, three types of DIF were examined: DIF on loadings, DIF on thresholds, and DIF on both loadings and thresholds. Results indicated that for sample size 250, all …

After a spectacular first half of this decade, the regional economy decelerated in 2007. A combination of declining rates of growth in defense spending, the closing of the Ford Norfolk Assembly Plant and a sluggish national economy reduced the growth of the regional economy to the national average. Looming base realignment and closure reductions beginning in 2008 bode to continue this trend.

We are a generous lot in Hampton Roads. The region’s citizens give a higher proportion of their incomes to charity than the national average and African Americans, who direct very high proportions of their incomes to churches, lead the parade. Overall, the region’s citizens give 8.2 percent of their annual incomes to charity, easily topping the national average of 6.4 percent.

Private-sector shipbuilding and repair is big business in Hampton Roads and accounts, directly and indirectly, for about 15 percent of the total value of the region’s economic activity. More than 160 ship construction and repair firms in the area employ approximately 24,600 people, whose typical compensation is one-third above the regional average.

The rapid increase in regional housing prices in recent years (97 percent between 1997 and 2006) has made it much more difficult for some people to own their own home. Between these years, the annual interest and principal payments required for a typical home purchase rose from only 21.5 percent of the median income of our region’s households to 32 percent. Economically viable solutions to affordable housing challenges nearly always include increased housing density in order to make more moderately priced housing profitable to builders.

The region is home to approximately 45,000 Filipino Americans whose political and cultural impact has been growing progressively. They tend to be better educated and earn higher incomes than the typical regional citizen. Virginia Beach’s “Little Manila” area is a reminder of the increasing presence of Filipinos within Hampton Roads.

National amateur athletic events Hampton Roads hosts have flown under the radar insofar as their economic impact is concerned, but their impact is greater than that of local professional and collegiate teams, and virtually every city in the region benefits. The 2006 AAU Junior Olympics alone had an incremental economic impact of $50 million, primarily generated by visitors from outside of the region.

All things considered, the region has a case to make when it argues that it receives less than its “fair” share of state government spending. The geographic distribution of expenditures is particularly disadvantageous to Hampton Roads in the areas of K-12 education and car tax reimbursements, but less so in transportation and higher education.

Objective. To estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness of improving diabetes care with the Health Disparities Collaborative (HDC), a national collaborative quality improvement (QI) program conducted in community health centers (HCs).

Data Sources/Study Settings. Data regarding the impact of the Diabetes HDC program came from a serial cross-sectional follow-up study (1998, 2000, 2002) of the program in 17 Midwestern HCs. Data inputs for the simulation model of diabetes came from the latest clinical trials and epidemiological studies.

Study Design. We conducted a societal cost-effectiveness analysis, incorporating data from QI program evaluation into a Monte Carlo simulation model of diabetes.

Liberated Jokes: Sexual Humor In All-Female Groups, Janet Bing

Females have formerly been under-represented in jokes. Many scholars have claimed that joke making is primarily a male activity, particularly in the domain of sexual jokes. In this paper, I discuss sexual jokes that women share with each other both in all-female groups and by e-mail. After reviewing some widely held assumptions about women and jokes, I explore liberated women's jokes, including their structure, use of stereotypes, and subversive ideas. Finally, I discuss why humor theory is incomplete without the inclusion of a female perspective and suggest that women should tell more jokes.

The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which the Andersen and Aday Model of Health Services Use to predict cross-sectional and longitudinal differences in the caregiving source among stroke survivors (n=477) over a six-year period. This study involves a secondary analysis of a longitudinal panel study focusing upon three waves of interview data from the HAS/AHEAD study spanning 1998 through 2002. Multinomial logistic regression was utilized to examine caregiving source cross-sectionally at each wave. This dissertation systematically investigate the lead-lag relations between the trading volume and stock return patterns in China A share and B share markets through two streams of behavioral postulations. In the first part, we summarize all the potential lead-lag patterns between trading volume and stock returns and link them to the corresponding behavioral explanations. In particular, Lee and Swaminathan's (2000) Momentum Life Cycle theory best explains the strong negative relations between lagged trading volume and subsequent return in China A share market. This study is concerned with the judicial implementation of the revised family code in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The revised family code pertains to the family courts of Addis Ababa which are situated at the lower level of government structure. These courts have a public mandate and are the legitimate public forums wherein to authorize the implementation of the provisions of the code. Open-ended interviews were conducted with judges, attorneys and people affiliated with gender advocacy institutions. Throughout the nineteenth-century, writers, such as James Fenimore Cooper and Joseph C. Hart, fairly consistently appropriated the New England whaling industry for national purposes. They claimed the economic successes of the industry as American successes, and they positioned the whalemen as exemplary American workers. However, not all American whalemen were native-born Americans; some were foreign-born laborers. The presence of Polynesian workers and their racialized laboring bodies - often described as monstrous, grotesque, and repulsive - disrupted nationalistic appropriations of the whaling industry and its workers. Through our work in communities with people who are experiencing homelessness and insecure housing we consider the role of photography in picturing and subjecting communities to a gaze that has the potential to be empathic and engaged or uncaring and disengaged.

'Positive' representations of lesbian and gay parents within the media continue to draw parallels between the experiences of heterosexual parents and those of lesbian and gay parents. Such comparisons are typically aimed at 'proving' that lesbian and gay parents are acceptable parents. There is, however, most often a failure to examine how race mediates representations of the category 'parent', the result being that references to 'parents' typically refer to white parents. Particular bodies within the Australian nation can be seen to threaten to disrupt and destabilize dominant notions of cultural citizenship. Understood through intricate intersections of ethnicity, gender and sexuality, 'Australianness' - and its correlation to the geographical nation - is constantly monitored. Crucial here is the manner in which boundaries of whiteness, and 'true Australianess', are reconstituted, fuelling avoidance of the ambiguities of national belonging and ensuring the enduring pathologisation of the 'un'Australian. This article traces discursive and political attempts to discipline the reproduction of the Italian nation by analyzing the approval of a controversial law disciplining access to new reproductive technologies (NRTs) in 2004. The restriction of new reproductive technologies in Italy reflects a contemporary re-negotiation of gender ideologies and a renewed ascendance of the Vatican in Italian politics and society. Although abortion remains legal in Italy, the NRT legislation recognizes the embryo as a subject while in political discourse demographic alarmism slides into warnings of social disintegration. This paper presents a theoretical framework for the concept of understanding and how it can be used for assessing complex situations. Understanding is presented as a cognitive process on how an individual perceives and represents a complex domain based on his/her own predispositions, and how he/she selects knowledge or what may not be knowledge based on the same predispositions towards finding a set of solutions for the situation. Predispositions, in this case, are based on his/her epistemological, ontological and teleological biases while the domain is represented by irreducible and transient conditions. The article deals with the perceptions of the Probation and Parole Officers on making case load and workload decisions. Caseload is the number of offenders an officer supervised while the workload is the amount of time needed to accomplish a task. The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) provides baseline data in assisting policy-makers to resolve caseload and workload allocation issues. According to the article, officials should establish a definite goal to diminish recidivism through research-based processes.
