This paper examines the growth, nature, and character of three informal settlement complexes in the Durban Functional Region (DFR) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Informal settlements or jondolas have become a permanent feature of the South African landscape since democracy. During the apartheid era (1948 to 1994) these structures were temporary, existed in the shadow of metropolitan areas, and faced removal. The post-apartheid period has been characterized by an upsurge in the development of informal settlements especially around metropolitan areas. Delta Zeta Chapter at South Dakota State University in a direct sense grew out of the Alpha Rho Chapter at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. There, Edward P. Hogan, who was a student at the time, had been active in the Chapter as its president. His wife, Joan M. Hogan, was also a member in the 1960s. Thethird person who would ultimately playa role in the formation of Delta Zeta was Lee A. Opheim, an instructor at Saint Louis University, who had joined the Mu Chapter at the University of Minnesota, Duluth in the 1950s.

Young people today often hear their eIders talk about the severe winters oftheir youth, noting colder, snowier times in the past. A survey of elderly residents of NW Wisconsin documents their perceptions of past winters. The results of this survey were then related to an nual and decade mean winter temperature and snowfal l data from the same region for the period, 1920 to 1996. It appears that memories of the most severe winter weather are connected with childhood. A majority of respondents chose the 1930s as being the coldest decade in memory. In reality, it was not. A new initiation criterion for members is to donate five hours for the semester at any of the many off campus sites that needed help. This is an activity sponsored through the Campus Volunteer Center and is a good way to offer community service. We hosted two successful canoe trips this year: the fall trip was on our own Evergreen Lake and the spring trip was on the Vermillion River. The transportation of oil from Kuwait between the years 1970- 80, which was a period of relative political stability, is discussed. Based on physical, geopolitical and economic factors the country elected to use tankers rather than pipelines as did many other Gulf countries. During the period 1970- 80 the oil field to transport facilities, onshore and offshore rapidly expanded and technologically improved. Paralleling this active growth, oil tanker construction and capacity had increased. In recent years geopolitical circumstances in Kuwait and emerging Asian markets justify the option of tankers moving oil via the Gulf over pipeline transport to Mediterranean ports.

This paper explores Latino urban migration to Green Bay, Wisconsin, an intermediate size city of approximately 100,000 people. According to the census of 1990 there were approximately 1,500 Latinos living in Brown County with 1,000 ofthese living in the city of Green Bay. By 1997, estimates of the Latino population in Green Bay are from 6,000 to 7,000. Such a growth rate makes Latinos the fastest growing minority group in the city. The status of geography has long been a concern to its practitioners. Efforts have been proposed to increase both the visibility and vitality of geography at all educational levels. These efforts include the activities of social organizations such as Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU). This paper tests the hypothesis that geography departments with active chapters of Gamma Theta Upsilon, a geography honor society, will experience a greater increase in declared geography majors than will departments with inactive GTU chapters. Research on neighborhood social organization and crime typically conceptualizes neighborhood change on the order of decades, even though the local social contexts that individuals experience change daily through mobility for work, errands and recreation. In this study, the authors analyze data from the Seattle Neighborhoods and Crime Survey linked to the Census Transportation Planning Products to investigate whether within-day changes in neighborhood diversity are associated with an individual’s social cohesion and fear of crime. The authors find that individuals living in neighborhoods where diversity increases during the daytime tend to report more social cohesion and relatively less fear of crime. …

This study examines consumer responses to corporate social advocacy (CSA) surrounding Bud Light’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. We fielded a cross-sectional survey of U.S. beer drinkers (N = 386) measuring actual and ideal self-congruity, generational cohort, and purchase intention. Using PROCESS Model 4 with bootstrap confidence intervals, we tested whether self-congruity mediates the relationship between generation and purchase intention. Self-congruity strongly predicted purchase intention, and indirect effects of generation via both actual and ideal self-congruity were statistically significant. Conditional (contrast-specific) indirect effects were observed only for Gen X, indicating cohort-specific pathways from CSA to purchase intention through identity …

Can posting photos online help individuals achieve their goals? Past research has generally found that posting about goals on social media increases motivation to achieve those goals. However, little is known about the consequences of posting different types of goal-related content. This research uses real-world Instagram data to test the effects of posting photos about goal pursuit (i.e., goal enactment behaviors) versus goal intention (i.e., goal planning or setting) on goal attainment. Our findings indicate a positive and significant relationship between posting goal-pursuit photos and goal attainment. Conversely, posting goal-intention photos yields no measurable effect. The nature of contemporary digital ecosystems causes concerns that affect the person, the individual-self, an integral part of an individual’s information privacy calculus and hence a component of individuals’ Information Privacy Concerns (IPC). Yet, prior IPC models overlook self-focused concerns. This study articulates two constructs, termed “loss of autonomy” (i.e., autonomy) and “control over profiling” (i.e., profiling), that reflect individuals’ self-focused privacy concerns. Combining these new constructs with conventional IPC constructs that capture data-focused and device-focused concerns yields an IPC model made up of three dimensions: self-focused concerns, data-focused concerns, and device-focused concerns. However, bonobos (Pan paniscus), one of the two species most closely related to humans, are characterized by partial female dominance, with females forming close social bonds. In contrast, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), a close relative of the bonobo, are characterized by strong male-male bonding and social dominance with female chimpanzees lacking close social bonds. It offers a chronological overview of major screenwriting manuals’ treatment of dialect and slang (or lack thereof) 1946-2020. It then presents survey data of 53 currently-practicing screenwriters’ views on working with dialect and historical language in scripts, as well as their sense of possible changes in the industry regarding attitudes towards diverse voice representation on the page.
