The Establishment Of Turf Farming In Tsukuba City, Japan, Atsushi Onodera, Shizue Kamikihara, Takehiro Morimoto

Formative processes of a turf producing region are examined in Tsukuba City, the leading turf producing area in Japan. Turf production in Tsukuba City is carried out together by turf traders and landscape gardeners. Due to the urbanization of Tsukuba City, almost all farms are now operated part time. Since even elderly farmers can easily produce turf, turf production has become a widely accepted activity. Moreover, a golf course construction boom has lead to a greater demand in turf production and to high prices of turf.

Farm Chemicals As Indicators Of Sediment Sources In Iowa Rivers, Edward N. Nealson, George P. Malanson

Determination of the source of sediment in rivers and streams is important in order to effectively implement a program to reduce its concentration. This project uses agricultural chemicals as indicators of current sources of sediment from farm fields in the Cedar River, Iowa watershed. We hypothesized that the relations of sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorous yields to precipitation would indicate whether sediment originated from erosion of fields or from channel bank erosion of floodplains. The changes in sediment, nitrate, and phosphorus in the channel in response to rainfall events were determined. In simple regressions, all three variables have similar slopes when …

Carroll County, with its longstanding tradition in agriculture, has had many past experiences with drought. This paper examines drought as it pertains to the farming community in the county. Precipitation statistics for the past 30 years are analyzed in context of the drought occurring in the summer of 1991. Crop loss and the subsequent implementation of federal emergency relief programs by the administering agencies within Carroll County are investigated and an assessment of their overall effectiveness is determined. Various coping strategies and perceptions of drought on an individual level are explored based on a field interview with a Carroll County …

Based on data from aerial photographs the form, material component, and structure of the urban surface of Shanghai Proper are quantitatively mapped, classified, and analyzed. Relationships between the characteristic of the land cover and urban problems are identified. Urban surfaces include natural features such as open water and culture surfaces such as tile roofs, and concrete surfaces. A quantitative analysis of the land cover reveals the historical development of Shanghai and the emergence of an urban basin with the taller buildings at the perimeter, not in the central city. There are four million youth playing soccer in the United States and its growth rate of 1300 percent between 1975 and 1988 make it the fast growing sport in America. In every state, soccer reaches the youth from ages 4 to 19. Texas and California lead the nation in the number of youth playing the sport. Improving Rail Resources: The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor Upgrade, A. Stroup

The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor was awarded federal high-speed rail designation in October, 1992. This designation was the end result of a 22-year Amtrak/State of Michigan partnership created to improve the corridor's infrastructure and performance. Portions of the corridor are now able to support train speeds of up to 110 mph due to improvements to trackage and safety devices, and the elimination of some grade crossings. Facility improvements along with the infrastructure improvements have been responsible for the nearly 170 percent increase in annual corridor ridership since 1970. Alpha Chapter did an excellent job promoting geography this year. With 27 active members this was easy to do. We had several big projects that we took on. One was the restoration of the ISU Nature Trail which has been defunct for 10 years. The members enjoyed this outdoor project, picking up trash, old furniture and clearing the path. This project will continue to be on-going. We hope to write a selfguided tour book, create lesson plans for the local school teachers and add picnic tables and rebuild markers and signs. The spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, which inhabits bank around South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands, is the most economically important crustacean in the Caribbean region. In recent years concern regarding overfishing has become prominent. In this study 46 boat loads of specimens, with catches derived from 11 fishing sites were surveyed for data sets including size, sex, and amount from each site. The catch-per-unit effort calculated for each site revealed that individual diving ability and ease of harvest were the greatest determinants for choice of fishing site. Temporal And Spatial Changes In Beaver Pond Locations, Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Ross K. Meentemeyer, David R. Butler

Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.

First published in 1974, Yi-Fu Tuan's work Topophilia has become one of the most cited works in human geography. Using the method of citation analysis and data from the Citation Indexes, this paper explores the frequency of Topophilia's inclusion as a reference in scholarly literature. A temporal trend is identified, which indicates that citation to Topophilia rose in the late 1970s, dropped in the early 1980s, but rose again in the late 1980s. Within journals, the references to Topophilia by geographers has declined since the 1980s while citations in literature in the humanities has increased since the late 1980s. A …

The Effect Of Meteorological Conditions On Fly Ball Distances In North American Major League Baseball Games, Mark D. Kraft, Brent R. Skeeter

This study examines the effect of meteorological conditions on the flight of baseballs hit in North American major league baseball games. Statistical analyses are used to relate game-time temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction data to the flight distance of every fair fly ball hit in non-domed stadiums during the 1991 and 1992 seasons. Results indicate that temperature is the most important meteorological variable affecting fly ball distances at most stadiums. The effect of wind speed and direction varies in different stadiums, with surprising influences at certain stadiums. The results of this study may be strategically valuable to managers …

The northeastern section of Tennessee has been known as Upper East Tennessee since the 1840s. During the last few years, however, a new regional label, Northeast Tennessee, has been promoted as a more appropriate regional name. The push for a shift from the use of Upper East Tennessee to Northeast Tennessee has been spearheaded by agencies whose missions are to increase tourism and to attract new industry in the region. The return migration of the aged is analyzed using a logit model that integrates selected place attributes (i.e., climate, living costs, and health services), distance to the state of birth, and several personal characteristics (i.e., gender, marital status, age, and income). A five-percent Publ ic Use Microdata sample of the 1980 Census of the United States of America is utilized in this paper. Results indicate that a recently retired elderly person is likely to select his/ her place (state) of birth if it has a pleasant climate and low living costs. Place And Cultural Identity Among Guatemalan Indians: "The Fragility Of Goodness", Edward Davis

Place experience may be more important to culture groups in war-torn and impoverished countries than to those in stable, developed regions. There is evidence from diverse sources that place experiences are directly relevant to the distinct Indian identities found within Guatemala's western highlands. Individual municipios often are distinct in their clothing, language and attachment to the land. A rereading of ethnographies gathered during the last few decades, along with new survey data, suggest that place and identity are strongly linked, possibly in part as a response to a history of violence and oppression in the region.

The Medieval Arab world was a time of curiosity and inquiry, and many contributions to the knowledge of the earth were made during this period. Scientific study was strongly encouraged by many of the caliphate leaders. For this reason, we can call this period the "Age of Light." In contrast, many scientific studies during the " Dark Ages" of Medieval Europe were hindered by the Christian Church. Unfortunately, many Western scholarly accounts of the Middle Ages ignore the writings of Arab geographers. With the swift ascendence of generative AI tools like ChatGPT disrupting the academic and cultural landscape, librarians have debated how to respond to this incredibly consequential technology. From pondering its applications in completing rote tasks to denouncing its ethical conundrums, the debate has mainly centered on whether AI should even be used. In an instruction context, the scholarly conversation has been somewhat limited to how the ACRL Framework can be utilized when teaching with generative AI.
