The Perceptual Northwest, James Lowry, Mark Patterson, William Forbes

Faculty Articles

Our goal is to survey cultural perceptions defining the U.S. Northwest region. As geographers, we should concern ourselves with mental constructs of regions, as they can easily impede or facilitate communication. Assumptions of others’ regional boundaries and images may be erroneous. Over the past several decades, a handful of geographers have begun to examine these perceptual (or vernacular) maps and regions. Students at 21 colleges and universities were asked to identify: (1) boundaries of the U.S. Northwest region; (2) Northwest regional characteristics and symbols; and (3) what cities or other places best represent the Northwest.

The Honest Broker? Canada's Role In Haitian Development, Michele Zebich-Knos

Faculty Articles

Since the early 1990s Canada has played a key role in Haiti’s development process. The article explores whether Canada’s foreign policy is becoming more reliant on military-assisted solutions, including peacekeeping, as a way to solve Haiti’s internal problems and achieve good governance. The article also examines the Canadian concepts called “Responsibility to Protect, React and Rebuild” which are linked to humanitarian intervention, and their implication for Haitian sovereignty. The conclusion cautions against an overly ambitious Canadian development policy for Haiti which has little chance of success.

Conflict Tactics In A Mediation Setting, Linda Johnston, Michelle Lebaron

This essay examines the results of a pilot study undertaken at George Mason University as a joint effort between the Psychology Department and the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. The authors discuss the task of behavioralizing tactics commonly used in conflict situations, defining particular conflict styles often used by participants in conflicts, and the ability of the participants in the study to identify and agree upon the tactics and styles when viewed in a film. The authors also examine the relationship of shame, guilt, and anger in the conflict setting as it relates to the tactics used.

The article discusses the highlights of COMO XIX conference sponsored by the Georgia Library Association (GLA), the Georgia Association for Instructional Technology and the Georgia Library Media Association. The theme of the conference was "Beaches, Blogs and Books." Keynote speakers and concurrent sessions offered a wide range of topics on current trends and issues for all types of libraries. It also cites activities of the GLA.

Spotlight On Construction: St. Simons' Library Welcomed 70th Anniversary In New Facility

The article announces the grand opening event of the St. Simons Public Library in Georgia in January 2007. The library also celebrated its 70th anniversary on March 16. According to Libby Hogan, chair of the library's board of directors, they have 1,200 extra square feet of space in the renovated building. St. Simons joined the Three Rivers Public Library System (TRRLS) and PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services), bringing its patrons access to more than 8.5 million items owned by other PINES member libraries. The library currently has approximately 35,000 volumes, according to manager Maureen Hersey.

Trading Libraries: Off With A Roar, But Will It Soar?, Amy Geisen, Carol Waggoner-Angleton

The article focuses on Trading Libraries, a program originally proposed by Callie McGinnis, dean of libraries at Columbus State University. Its goals are that librarians and staff would receive a healthy and beneficial dose of professional development experience and make new professional connections to strengthen the library network. The program had these basic guidelines which includes a participant would shadow their counterpart from another University System of Georgia library and the participant could be a librarian or staff member.

My Own Private Library: A Peek Inside The Personal Library Of A Librarian, Chris Carroll

The author describes his own personal library. His father was a constant reader, and when he was young all of their books were kept on long, two-shelf bookcase in his bedroom. His personal library started with the works of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, but in the mid-1970s, two books shaped his mind. The first two adult novels he ever bought with his own money were "Carrie," by Stephen King and "Jaws," by Peter Benchley. In the last couple of years, he have been collecting crime noir books by Ken Bruen, Charlie Huston, Dennis Lehane and others.

Spotlight On Construction: Forsyth County Public Library Unveils Expansion, Renovation

The article unveils the expansion and renovation of Forsyth County Public Library in Georgia. A 15,000-square-foot Administrative Office facility was added to the Cumming Library building which provide space for headquarters staff. The new design scheme features mahogany furnishings, traditionally styled, such as end panels and the circulation desk. The children's area doubled in size and large murals were painted on two walls. The biggest challenge of the renovation was moving the collection and shelving to lay new carpet.

This article summarizes U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act section 404 internal control reports that reveal material weaknesses due to inadequate disaster recovery planning. According to the authors, Section 404 applies to public companies with over $75 million in public float. They advise that auditors evaluating internal control over financial reporting must consider key information technology-related risks and controls that affect financial reporting, including issues related to disaster recovery planning.
