The Consequences Of Information Revealed In Auctions, Brett E. Katzman, Matthew Rhodes-Kropf

This paper considers the ramifications of post-auction competition on bidding behavior under different bid announcement policies. In equilibrium, the auctioneer’s announcement policy has two distinct effects. First, announcement entices players to signal information to their post-auction competitors through their bids. Second, announcement can lead to greater bidder participation in certain instances while limiting participation in others. Specifically, the participation effect works against the signalling effect, thus reducing the impact of signalling found in other papers. Revenue, efficiency, and surplus implications of various announcement policies are examined.

The centerpiece of the 2007 Report by Goldman Sachs is the prediction of India’s phenomenal economic growth and power in the next few decades. In this article we critique the conceptual validity of that prognosis. In particular, we highlight several hard and soft infrastructure impediments to India’s emergence as a major economic power.

It’s unlikely that many of the more than one million visitors who experience The NEW World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta every year know that a small team of archivists helped bring the museum to life. Selecting historical materials to display and verifying the accuracy of exhibits are just two of the tasks faced by Coke archivists. In a high-order challenge, the small archives team—just six people, including two from the communications/ clerical staff—based at the company’s corporate headquarters across from Georgia Institute of Technology is charged with guardianship of Robert W. Web-managed finding aids require streamlined, efficient intellectual organization of materials. It is not just a question of aesthetics, but of pragmatics. A more consistent, generalizable system of organization aids institutions in adopting, migrating, and building on the structure. The generalizable elements of a solution can be repeated, predicted, explained, taught, and further developed.1 They also lend the skeletal structure necessary to support unique elements.

Archival Allegory? Cultural Studies And T.R. Schellenberg's Modern Archives: Principles And Techniques, Cheryl Beredo

President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in 1934, the same year that Theodore Roosevelt Schellenberg earned his doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania and began a career in archives. Schellenberg slowly and surely climbed the archival ranks, holding federal posts in Washington, D.C., and teaching archival-training courses at local universities; he later lectured on a variety of topics relating to archives in Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1950 Schellenberg was appointed to the prestigious position of director of Archival Management at NARA. Schellenberg soon published Modern Archives: Principles …

Providing access to original materials is an ethical responsibility for all professional archivists. In the Code of Ethics for Archivists, access is the sixth tenet, stating that archivists not only provide equal and open access to records, they preserve the intellectual integrity of collections. In an analog environment, this responsibility is somewhat straightforward and uncomplicated. However, technology has advanced rapidly over the past decade, and digitization projects are at the forefront of library and archival news. The article reports on the construction of a new library in Coweta County, Georgia. The construction of a new library was primary in the plan of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners and represents the first library built in Coweta County in 20 years. According to Barbara Osborne-Harris, Coweta County Library director, the vision has always been to create a library that facilitates, in many ways, vibrant, energetic and interactive learning. Kathleen Curry is the project architect. She referred to Frank Lloyd Wright's designs for architectural inspiration.

The budget for the project will total approximately $6 million and will be located in Flowery Branch at the corner of Spout Springs Road and Lake Sterling Boulevard. Pope Partners of Roswell is the architectural firm for the project. Scroggs and Grizzel Contracting Inc. of Gainesville managed the construction. Some special highlights of the facility include a large computer lab and a dedicated storytime room.

The article reports on the expansion of the Chickamauga Public Library, a branch of the Cherokee Regional Library System in Georgia. It has experienced such growth in programming and book collections that an expansion was greatly needed. The city of Chickamauga, upon the recommendation of John Culpepper, city utilities manager, allocated $100,000 of local special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds for the expansion and redesign of the library. Library manager Bobbie Abernathy lobbied to bring about public awareness of the expansion need and to secure local and state funding.

The Sounds And The Furies: Managing An Active Library In A New Generation Of Learners, Alan Bernstein

The article reveals that the Odum Library of Valdosta State University in Georgia participated in the LibQual™ survey to assess how well the library is performing in three specific areas: Effect of Service, Library as Place and Information Control. The Library as Place section was of the greatest interest for survey participants. Noise in the library received by far the most comments, most of them negative. The author examines the noise phenomenon in his library, reviewed its history, contemplated his developing attitudes, and analyzed his thoughts about the noise issue.

'Classic Rock Cares' At Parks Memorial.

The article announces that Parks Memorial Library in Richland, Georgia has received musical instruments from the John Entwistle Foundation for a program to promote music education among children. As part of its Check-Out Music program, the library now has an electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and amplifiers. The foundation launched an eight city tour known as Classic Rock Cares which was to be the first concert tour designed specifically to raise funds for the foundation's mission of free music education and instruments through the public library system.

The article presents an outline for beginning the process of building new library for the community based on planning principles that will lead to a well-documented and articulated plan for the future. The development of a comprehensive strategic plan of library service is the first step a library system should take. The Public Library Association (PLA) "New Planning for Results," which has been used successfully by many libraries in the U.S. is one example of a successful planning model. The final step in the process is writing a building program.

The article reports that the Muscogee County Library board of trustees has earmarked $1 million for the purchase of materials for the Genealogy and Local History Department of the Chattahoochee Valley Regional Library System in Georgia. The amount was part of the $6.1 million that remained from a 1999 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that paid for the construction of the Columbus Public Library (Main Branch). The article reports on the construction of Georgia Gwinnett College's (GGC) academic library. The current library space is housed on two open floors within the Signature Building. A new, stand-alone building will be needed to meet all of the needs of the new college. GGC established the Library Planning Group in 2006. The goal of the project is that the library will become a learning center for the entire college community.

Is She Chinese Or American? On The Identity Communication Patterns Between Caucasian Parents And Their Adopted Chinese Daughters In The U.S., May H. Gao, Deanna F. Womack

This study explored patterns of identity communication between Caucasian parents and their adopted Chinese daughters. As they grow up in "biracial" and "bicultural" families, adoptees must integrate multiple identities of being "ethnically Chinese," "culturally American," "female," "abandoned," and "adopted." Using qualitative methods, the researchers conducted 1-1 ½ hour in-depth interviews of adoptive parents to identify communication patterns and strategies used to create and manage the bicultural identities of their Chinese daughters.

We introduce a perfect price discriminating (PPD) mechanism for allocation problems with private information. A PPD mechanism treats a seller, for example, as a perfect price discriminating monopolist who faces a price schedule that does not depend on her report. In any PPD mechanism, every player has a dominant strategy to truthfully report her private information. We establish a revelation principle for dominant strategy implementation: any outcome that can be dominant strategy implemented can also be dominant strategy implemented using a PPD mechanism.
