Contrasting Adult And Emerging Adult Women On Possible Psychosocial And Behavioral Correlates Of Short-Term Weight Loss, James J. Annesi, Ping H. Johnson
Health Behavior Research
Physical activity could be associated with psychosocial correlates of changes in eating behaviors required for weight loss. This field investigation assessed relationships of physical activity with early changes in psychosocial variables such as depression, fatigue, and body satisfaction; and their effect on fruit/vegetable and sweets intake and weight change. Emerging adult women from a university setting (Mage = 20.4 years, SD = 2.0; n = 36) and adult women from a community health-promotion setting (Mage = 45.6 years, SD = 7.3; n = 36), participating in the same cognitive-behavioral weight-loss program that initiated physical activity prior …

Heated Discussion: Strategies For Communicating Climate Change In A Polarized Era, Jessica Merzdorf, Linda J. Pfeiffer, Beth Forbes
Journal of Applied Communications
The 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that Earth’s temperatures may soon reach a tipping point that threatens humanity’s future. Scientists from many disciplines agree that anthropogenic climate change is a serious problem yet many Americans remain skeptical of the existence, causes, and/or severity of climate change. In this article, we review recent research on climate change communication focusing on audience variables and messaging strategies with the goal of providing communication practitioners research-based recommendations for climate change message design. Factors that influence audience acceptance and understanding of climate science include: demographic variables (such as political party …

Communication Channel Preferences: A Descriptive Audience Segmentation Evaluation, Kevan W. Lamm, Abigail Borron, Jessica Holt, Alexa J. Lamm
Journal of Applied Communications
For over 70 years the use of opinion leaders in a two-step communication process has been employed and validated. However, despite the accepted importance of communicating with opinion leaders as a means to cascade information to opinion leaders’ networks of influence there have been few empirical studies specifically examining agricultural and natural resource opinion leader communication channel preferences, particularly from an audience segmentation perspective. The results reported in the study capitalize on previous research data examined from a unique perspective. Specifically, communication channel preferences were analyzed according to opinion leader self-reported demographic categories serving as audience segments. Associations between sex, …
Does Good Design Matter In The Seedstock Advertising Business? Effects Of Graphic Design In Beef Seedstock Ads On Cattle Producers’ Trust And Credibility, Morgan L. Marley, Katie M. Abrams, Daniela Castillo
Does Good Design Matter In The Seedstock Advertising Business? Effects Of Graphic Design In Beef Seedstock Ads On Cattle Producers’ Trust And Credibility, Morgan L. Marley, Katie M. Abrams, Daniela Castillo
Journal of Applied Communications
Designers are trained professionals who understand how to effectively visually communicate based on executing principles of design and an understanding of their audience. Within the beef seedstock industry, ad design varies widely in terms of technical effectiveness, but how do those differences affect potential customers? This study tested the effects of seedstock ad’s graphic design on the viewer’s trust and credibility among 561 Angus cattle producers. Our results show the graphic design of a beef seedstock ranch ad promoting an upcoming bull sale did not influence producers’ perceptions of trust and credibility. However, results did reveal better designed ads are …
Interactive Infographics' Effect On Elaboration In Agricultural Communication, Erin Burnett, Jessica Holt, Abigail Borron, Bartosz Wojdynski
Interactive Infographics' Effect On Elaboration In Agricultural Communication, Erin Burnett, Jessica Holt, Abigail Borron, Bartosz Wojdynski
Journal of Applied Communications
In public health, politics, and advertising, interactive content spurred increased elaboration from audiences that were otherwise least likely to engage with a message. This study sought to examine interactivity as an agricultural communication strategy through the lens of the Elaboration Likelihood Model. Respondents were randomly assigned a static or interactive data visualization concerning the production of peaches and blueberries in Georgia, then asked to list their thoughts in accordance with Petty and Cacioppo’s thought-listing measure. Respondents significantly exhibited higher elaboration with the interactive message as opposed to the static, extending the results of past research in other communication realms to …

A Comparative Content Analysis Of News Stories And Press Releases During The 2015 Blue Bell Ice Cream Recall, Brandyl Brooks Calley, Courtney Meyers, Courtney Gibson, Erica Irlbeck
Journal of Applied Communications
In 2015, Blue Bell Creameries had its first recall in the company’s history. Blue Bell issued a voluntary recall of all of its ice cream products after Listeria was detected and was linked to 10 illnesses that resulted in three deaths. With the theoretical framework of framing and Situational Crisis Communication Theory, the purpose of this study was to explore how this recall was presented in company press releases and news media coverage to determine what crisis communication strategies Blue Bell implemented and how the media presented that information. This study was a content analysis of 23 press releases from …

Food Insecurity And Assistance On Campus: A Survey Of The Student Body, Michael Miller, Gerad Middendorf, Spencer Wood, Sonya Lutter, Scott Jones, Brian Lindshield
Online Journal of Rural Research & Policy
According to recent studies, food insecurity affects from 34%-59% of college students. This will continue to be an issue as tuition increases and more low-income and first-generation students enter universities and colleges. Nearly 52% of college students live at, or near, the poverty level, compared to a national poverty rate of 14.5%. This leaves many undergraduate and graduate students with challenging decisions around meeting their basic housing, nutritional, and educational expenses. To assess food insecurity at Kansas State University (KSU), a random sample of undergraduate and graduate students was surveyed. Findings include a high rate of food insecurity (44.3%) among …

Examining Multiple Health Behaviors, Julie M. Croff, Ashleigh L. Chiaf, Erica K. Crockett
Examining Multiple Health Behaviors, Julie M. Croff, Ashleigh L. Chiaf, Erica K. Crockett
Health Behavior Research
Health behaviors have been extensively studied as predictors of disease; however, these behaviors may interact and intersect to amplify or ameliorate risks of predicted disease outcomes. Breadth of study is needed to examine how single antecedents may act to influence multiple health behaviors, and how multiple health behaviors may predict other behaviors and/or interact to influence the occurrence of disease outcomes. Better understanding of how behaviors interact and impact health is necessary to identify the appropriate leverage points for the evolution of health behavior theory, and the promotion of multiple health behavior change.

To compensate the US producers affected by the “trade war” with China, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offered direct payments to producers using 2018 production levels under the Market Facilitation Program (MFP). Results of the revenue efficiency analysis of the MFP payments show the average producers in 12 out of 14 major corn and soybean producing states were compensated such that their 2018 per acre revenue was more than their 2017 per acre revenue. Conversely, an average producer in those states that experienced drought was under-compensated, as their total per acre revenue after the MFP payment was less …

As the world increasingly turns its attention to the European refugee crisis and to the 1.8 million who have arrived on that continent since 2014 as a consequence of being forced to flee their native countries’ war-torn cities and villages, questions continue to arise regarding the ethical and political responsibilities of Western nations to facilitate this exodus and to provide refugee and immigration services en route and at destination. Spain remains the intended port of arrival for thousands of Malians, Mauritanians, Moroccans, and Western Saharans who sometimes manage to escape war and extreme poverty only to find themselves stalled on …
Blending Inductive And Deductive Processes In The English/Language Arts Classroom, Joseph M. Lynch
Blending Inductive And Deductive Processes In The English/Language Arts Classroom, Joseph M. Lynch
The Advocate
This article attempts to demonstrate how the inductive and deductive processing modes function together. Educational models associated with an inductive learning process provide a great opportunity for students to assess their accountability in the learning process. However, the lessons gleaned from such an inductive approach can be more insight-provoking when a synthesis of (or at least access to) deductive processing occurs. The topic is presented in two parts: The first part constitutes a review of the inductive/deductive dynamic through research, study, and theory across multiple learning contexts. The second part presents a qualitative study and data examples for the purposes …

The Effect Of Emphasizing Credibility Elements And The Role Of Source Gender On Perceptions Of Source Credibility, Ariana Bigham, Courtney Meyers, Nan Li, Erica Irlbeck
Journal of Applied Communications
Agricultural technology continues to evolve to meet the demands of a growing world, but previous advancements in agricultural technology have been met with resistance. Improved science communication efforts can assist in bridging the gap between expert and lay opinion to improve reception of scientific information. Using the framework of the heuristic model of persuasion, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of emphasizing elements of source credibility – trustworthiness and expertise – and the gender of the source on perceptions of source credibility. A sample of 122 undergraduate students were exposed to one of the four possible …

Can Anyone Hear Us? An Exploration Of Echo Chambers At A Land-Grant University, Taylor K. Ruth, Joy N. Rumble, Sebastian Galindo-Gonzalez, Lisa K. Lundy, Hannah S. Carter, Kevin M. Folta
Journal of Applied Communications
Faculty at land-grant universities are expected to engage in some form of Extension, or science communication, as part of the land-grant mission. However, critics have claimed these institutions are out of touch with their stakeholders’ needs and faculty mainly communicate with others in academia. This engagement with a homogenous group reflects the concepts of echo chambers, where people are only exposed to information that aligns with their beliefs and current knowledge and discredit opposing information. An explanatory mixed-methods design was used to understand land-grant faculty’s engagement in echo chambers. A survey was distributed to a census of tenure-track faculty in …
Crowdsourcing Change: An Analysis Of Twitter Discourse On Food Waste And Reduction Strategies, Annie R. Specht, Emily B. Buck
Crowdsourcing Change: An Analysis Of Twitter Discourse On Food Waste And Reduction Strategies, Annie R. Specht, Emily B. Buck
Journal of Applied Communications
Food waste has emerged as a major issue in the United States as the nation collectively sends more than 133 billion pounds of food to its landfills every year. In September 2015, the USDA and EPA announced an initiative to cut U.S. food waste in half by 2030. Between 2015 and 2016, nearly 100,000 posts about food waste have been published on Twitter, a microblogging platform that has been a hub of “slacktivism” since its inception in 2006. Using a conceptual framework of social cognitive theory, online activism, and crowdsourcing, we analyzed food waste conversation participants’ demographics, online communities, and …

Should Livestock Images Provide Historical Reference Or Modern Reality? An Examination Of The Influence Of Livestock Communication On Attitude., Joy N. Rumble, Tiffany M. Rogers-Randolph, Emily B. Buck
Journal of Applied Communications
The livestock industry has repeatedly struggled to effectively communicate livestock care and handling practices in order to promote awareness and acceptance. Many consumers still hold on to the historically picturesque view of production agriculture instead of the modern reality. It is necessary for the industry to identify how much is too much to tell or show consumers. Therefore, this study sought to understand the influence of two communication treatments on attitudes toward livestock care and use. Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) served as the theoretical framework for this study. A sample of 1,049 respondents was obtained through non-probability sampling. To fulfill …

Vietnam's Natural Hazards - 1999 Flood, Vu H. Vo
Kansas State University Undergraduate Research Conference
Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by natural hazards such as flood. For instance, during the 1990s to the early 2000s, the country experienced numerous floods, particularly in its central and southern regions. Located in Southeast Asia, bordered by China in the north, Laos and Cambodia in the west, and the South China Sea in the east, the country has 2,860 small and large rivers with a total flow of about 867 billion cubic meters per year. The central region of Vietnam is narrow, mountainous, and close to the coastline. Many rivers pass through the region, which had …
