Making It Real: The Impact Of A Short-Term Study Abroad Experience On Students’ Ethnocentricity & Views Of Meaning In Life, Erin A. Mueller
Making It Real: The Impact Of A Short-Term Study Abroad Experience On Students’ Ethnocentricity & Views Of Meaning In Life, Erin A. Mueller
CUP Faculty Research
Short-term study abroad experiences have been found to increase cross-cultural awareness and overall student growth and decrease ethnocentrism, though studies are lacking. The benefits of short-term experiences may only surface through qualitative measures, not quantitative. The goals of this study were to assess the impact of a short-term study abroad experience on students’ ethnocentrism and views of meaning in life. Six undergraduate students from Portland, Oregon, studied in Cape Town, South Africa, in the spring of 2012, and participated in this study. They took a 3-credit course, Global Perspectives on Psychology, as well as completed 3 credits of practicum through …

Privacy is the bulwark of any free society. It seems like such a simple concept— letting people decide what information about themselves they want to make public—but what does it really entail? Today’s political and commercial world is about collecting information about people.
The Social Media Spectrum, Laurie J. Van Leuven
The Social Media Spectrum, Laurie J. Van Leuven

When it comes to social media practices within the realm of homeland security and emergency management, one thing is clear: There is no “one size fits all.” Every organization could be charted to fall on a different point along a diverse spectrum of possible goals, strategies, and tactics. But it may likely be an organization’s attitude, culture, and structure (not the complexity of their approach) that best determines the success rate of their efforts.

The aim of this research was to determine if a mindfulness-training (MT) program for teachers cultivated habits of mind (e.g., mindfulness, emotion regulation, compassion and forgiveness) conducive to effective teaching. Data were gathered in two randomized control trials. Results from pre- to post-test and follow-up showed that MT was associated with increases in mindfulness, efficacy for regulating emotion on the job, and the tendency to forgive others. Linguistic analyses revealed that teachers who underwent MT expressed more positive affect when discussing their most challenging student than those in the waitlist control group. Results warrant further investigation using behavioral-, observational-, and …

Mate Selection And Marital Expectations: Examination Of A Modern College Cohort, Erin Mueller, Brittnie Pearson
Mate Selection And Marital Expectations: Examination Of A Modern College Cohort, Erin Mueller, Brittnie Pearson
CUP Faculty Research
Examining cohort effects of mate selection has occurred for several decades. Much of the research is based on Hill’s classic 1945 study Campus Values in Mate Selection. Hill formulated 18 factors important in mate selection. These factors have been utilized in several studies, including a recent cross-cultural investigation (Stone, Shackelford, & Buss, 2006). Marital expectations can be framed in an epigenetic model that includes the importance of an ideal partner (Juvva & Bhatti, 2006). The goals of this descriptive study were twofold: (1) to identify the factors important in mate selection to a modern cohort of college students and (2) …

Optimizing Citizen Engagement During Emergencies Through Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies, Laurie J. Van Leuven
Optimizing Citizen Engagement During Emergencies Through Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies, Laurie J. Van Leuven
CUP Faculty Research
Emergencies and disasters create hardships for citizens. To speed up recovery, local governments need to engage with citizens in an interactive information sharing system to convey information while the incident is still developing and to help mitigate and recover from damages. Lack of effective communication can decrease public trust and engender stress and anxiety of the survivors. As service delivery becomes more complicated during an emergency, responders can also benefit from additional information from the public to increase situational awareness and better understand the challenges facing citizens. This thesis examines emergency information needs, emerging information sharing trends, and the potential …

Introduction To Special Issue: Grants, Judy Anderson

America’s founding fathers decided that is was not in the best interest of its citizens for the federal government to be directly involved with social welfare, but recognized a duty to assist its less fortunate. They made provisions for non-profit organizations to distribute money to aid those in need. Universities considered it unseemly, before World War II, to accept tainted monies from the government, since it might bear undue influence over pure scientific research. This pattern has evolved. Today non-profit, corporate, and government grant monies are available to be used by thousands of persons, organizations, and state governments for research, …
Parental Involvement In Education Among Low-Income Families: A Case Study, Jane Graves Smith
Parental Involvement In Education Among Low-Income Families: A Case Study, Jane Graves Smith
CUP Faculty Research
In order to explore parental involvement among low-income families, a case study was conducted at a public elementary school in the Pacific Northwest. In 2002, a new school replaced an outdated structure. During the planning stage for the new school, community members and agency professionals, along with educators, developed and implemented programs to both support families and engage them in their children’s education. Utilizing qualitative research methods, interviews, observations, and document reviews were conducted with the intention of investigating the impact of efforts undertaken to involve parents at the new school. The study found that the development and implementation of …

Deconstructing Parental Involvement In Education: A Review Of De Carvalho's Work, Jane A. Smith
CUP Faculty Research
In Rethinking Family-School Relations: A Critique of Parental Involvement in Schooling, Maria Eulina Pessoa de Carvalho (2001) addresses the many complexities and implications involved when policy makers attempt to engage parents in their child’s education. By offering a critique of parental involvement policies, this book provokes thought and challenges current rhetoric among educators. In the first pages, the author places herself in direct opposition to current educational research and policy that presents parental involvement as a remedy to educational problems (Swap, 1993). Even though de Carvalho (2001) can see parental involvement as a “sensible idea” (p. 4), she opposes a …

Ideas. How has our society come to think we can put a price tag on them and when does using the idea of another become theft?
This work permits the exploration of many facets of plagiarism and the theft of intellectual property. The four-part Introduction summarizes and dissects the many currents of the present situation (late 1997). It includes definitions, cases, the underlying sense of "follow the money" that seems to permeate this ethereal realm, and the means used to prove or disprove the accusations of misconduct.
