Peers are a huge part of life and affect people in many different ways. In adolescence and adulthood, peers have different kinds of impacts. The researchers chose to research how peer influence can affect the decisions, performance and attitudes of adolescents and adults. Specifically, researchers analyzed how lifestyle decisions influenced by peers affect mental health and how the effects differ from gender and age. Participants of the study were selected to fit the three age groups needed for this study and responses were collected via electronic survey. Throughout this study, the relationship that peer influence has with mental health, positive …

Throughout universities around the world, every day, the mental health of college students is tested. Specifically, collegiate athletes may feel uncomfortable, or uncertain seeking out resources to assess their overall mental health. There are numerous reasons athletes may be either comfortable or uncomfortable seeking out these resources. Some reasons can include being seen as a sign of weakness, there being no resources for athletes, or they are uncertain about what resources are available to them. The researchers chose to investigate the mental health of two different sports teams at a university. Specifically, the researchers explored these athletes and their mental …

Impact Of Coping Styles On Perceptions Of Grief, Marissa Providence
Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Abstract
Human and pet bereavement tend to have contrasting views as pet loss still has yet to be acknowledged and has caused some pet owners to grieve in isolation. This is commonly called disenfranchised grief. Bereavement can, in turn, involve a variety of symptoms such as loneliness, hope, and in most cases prolonged grief disorder. Given the substantial impact of loss as well as potential differences in perceptions of grief for different types of losses, the current study sought out to examine how perceptions of grief are impacted by the type of loss and coping style. Participants viewed an online …

Abstract
Depression is a serious mental illness which is becoming increasingly prevalent among college-age individuals and the general public. Depression and other mental illnesses have come under increasing concern in the United States overall and on college campuses in particular. Given concerns regarding depression among college students, it is important to examine college students’ perceptions of depression among college students versus non-college students. The current study examined and compared college students’ perceptions of depression among college students versus non-college-attending individuals. Participants viewed an online survey which included one of two versions of a vignette which described “Sam,” a “hardworking individual” …

Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Religiosity is an area of the human psyche that can establish peoples’ perceptions of the world. Most people in the world believe in a higher power, and there are many psychological benefits to this. According to literature in the field, some of these benefits include constructive coping strategies (DeRosset et al., 2021), high self-efficacy (Florin et al., 2021), improved academic performance (Henning et al., 2015), and better overall mental wellbeing (Tamkeen et al., 2021). The goal of this study was to explore the potential correlations between Religious Strength/Affiliation and Academic Performance and Religious Strength/Affiliation and Mental Wellbeing. Another purpose that …

Examining The Connection Between Sibling Relationships And Empathy Development, Alicia Joswiak
Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Humans are social beings who shape their lives through relationships. The ability to understand the mental status of others, or empathy, is a critical determinant to successful social relationships. Few studies have explored how older siblings influence the development of empathy in younger siblings. The current study examined an aspect of positive sibling relationships to understand what interactions and/or behaviors between siblings foster empathy development. The primary hypothesis was that a positive correlation exists between physical affection among siblings and empathy development in the youngest sibling. This study included 100 adult participants who are the youngest sibling. An online survey …

Parenting approaches have a huge influence on communities in this day and age. Everyone falls into a group of individual communication styles and parenting influences where they land. Parenting styles have been studied thoroughly in the past and in multiple contexts. This study aims to determine if there is a correlation between parenting styles and people’s individual communication style. Authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved parenting styles encapsulated the range of styles most parents use. These are the four consistently used throughout the study to measure what outcomes came from which styles. Passive, passive-aggressive, assertive, and aggressive were selected as suitable …

How Communication With Parents Affects The Psychological Well-Being Of Traditional First-Year University Students, Jena Thormodson, Hannah Torkelson, Benjamin Diers
Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Traditional first-year university students are experiencing one of life’s greatest transitions. For many students, they are learning how to live independently for the first time, navigate relationships and support, and deal with new experiences that happen in college. Since traditional first-year students are not considered developmentally as adults, this study sought to determine how parental communication can influence how students feel during this time of transition of both college and emerging adulthood. More specifically we measured how the frequency of communication and type of parental support can affect the student’s psychological well-being. A survey was used to gather this data …

The energy level in the room is high. Students work together diligently, examining their computer screens and sharing ideas to try to solve a problem. When the instructor asks them to share their findings, several students raise their hands and offer insightful observations. After the session is over, a couple of students take the time to tell the instructor the value of what they learned in class and how helpful it will be to them. This scenario is what we instructors strive for—that our students will be engaged in our sessions and leave feeling their time was well-spent.

Universities expand their online graduate programs daily, which challenges academic librarians to maintain research support and information literacy instruction for the growing number of online students. Performance support offers a scalable solution to the problems of limited time and staffing that academic librarians face. When embedded in the learning management system throughout a course or program, performance support provides point of need research help and scaffolds students’ information literacy development. Librarians are able to focus their limited time helping students with their more advanced research needs.

Given the importance of perspective taking and the associated constructs of empathic concern and personal distress, together with the interest in the varying associations of these constructs with different forms of self-evaluation, a systematic exploration of the correlations of self-esteem and self-compassion with elements of interpersonal reactivity is valuable. In this meta-analysis, I investigate the correlation of these constructs to both self-evaluation frameworks.
Views Of Meaning In Life: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Francophone And American Cultures, Erin A. Mueller
Views Of Meaning In Life: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Francophone And American Cultures, Erin A. Mueller
CUP Faculty Research
The concept of meaning in life is existential in nature; essential to being human yet elusive at times. As Frankl (1959) wrote, “Man’s search for meaning is the primary motivation in his life…This meaning is unique and specific in that it must and can be fulfilled by him alone” (p. 121). Grasping what, exactly, it is composed of can be challenging. Moreover, the question of the universality of what goes into each individual’s meaning in life likely connects with culture. Culture is an inherent part of being human, and it has considerable impact on development. Thus, could there be differences …

Cypherpunks: Freedom And The Future Of The Internet And The Snowden Files, Judy Anderson
CUP Faculty Research
The continuing saga of WikiLeaks and the fate of Edward Snowden remain a story of conflicting viewpoints. Those interested in exploring the reasoning behind such hacking and exposure will find that Cypherpunks supplies the background and philosophy of the techies who feel strongly that the Internet must remain a free zone for privacy in communication, economic activity, and movement/ travel. The Snowden Files shows another, more reserved, approach but with the same end—to alert people to the government’s invasion of their personal privacy that, legally, it is only permitted access after proper procedures are followed against specific individuals.

Innovative Uses Of Social Media In Emergency Management, Space And Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic
CUP Faculty Research
Information sharing between public safety organizations and communities is critical in emergency situations, especially large-scale events such as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes. In recent years, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), “Social media and collaborative technologies have become critical components of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.” Through the use of social media, members of the public who witness incidents can provide public safety organizations with timely, geographic-based information. This information can be used by decision-makers in planning response strategies, deploying resources in the field, and, in turn, providing updated and accurate information to the public.

Short-term study abroad experiences have been found to increase cross-cultural awareness and overall student growth and decrease ethnocentrism, though studies are lacking. The benefits of short-term experiences may only surface through qualitative measures, not quantitative. The goals of this study were to assess the impact of a short-term study abroad experience on students’ ethnocentrism and views of meaning in life. Six undergraduate students from Portland, Oregon, studied in Cape Town, South Africa, in the spring of 2012, and participated in this study. They took a 3-credit course, Global Perspectives on Psychology, as well as completed 3 credits of practicum through …

When it comes to social media practices within the realm of homeland security and emergency management, one thing is clear: There is no “one size fits all.” Every organization could be charted to fall on a different point along a diverse spectrum of possible goals, strategies, and tactics. But it may likely be an organization’s attitude, culture, and structure (not the complexity of their approach) that best determines the success rate of their efforts.
