Disability Status, Disability Type, And Training As Predictors Of Job Placement, Jessica Stahl May 2015

Disability Status, Disability Type, And Training As Predictors Of Job Placement, Jessica Stahl

All Dissertations

Human Capital Theory was used as a means to formulate predictions regarding the placement rates for disabled and non-disabled individuals who participated in job training programs at a non-profit agency in the Southeast. Research suggesting that disabilities are viewed as an economic liability by employers was reviewed, along with empirically based rejoinders to this stereotype. The first goal of this study was to address flaws in the existing categorization systems of disabilities, and to justify a categorization system that was more detailed than the typical psychological/physical disability distinction in the I/O and vocational rehabilitation literature (e.g., Ren, Paetzold, and Colella, …

Values Assigned To National Parks By Hispanics In The United States: Castillo De San Marcos And Fort Matanzas Nm And Great Smoky Mountains Np, Carla Mora-Trejos

All Dissertations

The integrity of Parks and Protected Areas (PPA) depends on management that acknowledges their position as part of the socio-cultural context and demonstrates awareness and attention to ethnic and racial dimensions of the communities adjacent to these areas. The Unites States National Park Service has dedicated resources and effort to determine ways to keep units in the national park service relevant in a changing world. The fastest growing and second largest demographic in the Unites States is the Latino or Hispanic population. Very little has been published about this rapidly growing population of Latin Americans residing in the United States …

Three Essays On Corruption And Government Finance, Yukun Sun May 2015

Three Essays On Corruption And Government Finance, Yukun Sun

All Dissertations

There are three chapters in my dissertation. In chapter one I study the impact of government corruption on tax avoidance by corporations with tax liability in China. I begin by developing a model of a firm's choice of tax avoidance based on the level of corruption in the firm's province. I show that a higher level of government corruption and a higher tax rate are predicted to increase a firm's tax avoidance. My empirical estimates show that a one-standard-deviation increase in government corruption corresponds to a 6% increase in tax avoidance by firms, based on data from nearly 600,000 firms …

Estimation Of Procurement Auctions With Secret Reserve Prices, Di Wu May 2015

Estimation Of Procurement Auctions With Secret Reserve Prices, Di Wu

All Dissertations

The first two chapters of my dissertation are essays on estimation of procurement auctions with secret reserve prices. In the last chapter, I develop a test on strong disposability versus weak disposability for non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) estimators. In auctions with secret reserve prices, the possibility that the item goes unsold in the first round generates a particular form of multi-round auction in which information on bids is revealed after each round. If bidders have an imperfect estimate of project costs, the information revealed by observing the bids of others in the previous round can mitigate the classic winner's …

Re-Shaping Our Vision Of Intimate Partner Violence: A Qualitative Analysis Of Survivors' Reaction To Existing Campaigns, Erin Alexandra Neal May 2015

Re-Shaping Our Vision Of Intimate Partner Violence: A Qualitative Analysis Of Survivors' Reaction To Existing Campaigns, Erin Alexandra Neal

All Theses

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2003), an estimated 5.3 million incidents of intimate partner violence (IPV) occur each year in the United States, resulting in nearly 2 million injuries, and approximately 1,300 deaths. Additionally, The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (2011) found that 1 in 3 women (35.6%) have experienced sexual and/or physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner. More attention has been paid to IPV in the past two decades, resulting in an increase in the number of prevention and intervention mass media campaigns; however, very few campaigns report consulting survivors …

Skating For Strength: The Experiences Of Skating In Women's Flat Track Roller Derby, Jerrica Ty Rowlett May 2015

Skating For Strength: The Experiences Of Skating In Women's Flat Track Roller Derby, Jerrica Ty Rowlett

All Theses

Feminists are continually seeking methods of improving the lives of women, whether that is through fighting for women's rights, promoting embracing aspects of being a female, or discovering new methods of female empowerment. This research looks at the last of these by exploring the experiences of women who are within their first year of competitively playing women's flat track roller derby through a qualitative phenomenological study. In order to do this, eight women were interviewed from two competitive teams located in the southeast region of the United States. From these interviews, five categories of experience emerged as significant aspects of …

Identifying The Importance And Performance Perceptions Of Positive Youth Development Features In Camps Worldwide, Chelsea Marie Schwabe May 2015

Identifying The Importance And Performance Perceptions Of Positive Youth Development Features In Camps Worldwide, Chelsea Marie Schwabe

All Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine international camp professionals' perceptions of the importance and performance of Eccles and Gootman's (2002) Eight Features that Maximize Positive Youth Development. Members of the International Camping Fellowship, ages 18 and older and of different demographic backgrounds, were asked for their perceived importance and performance ratings of the eight features on a five point Likert scale. The data were used to create importance-performance matrices using Martilla and James' (1977) Importance-Performance Analysis technique in order to create visual depictions of the recorded perceptions. This cross-cultural, cross-sectional study utilized Importance-Performance Analysis to create a snapshot …

New Americans' Perspectives On Retention And Adaptation Of Childrearing Practices In Vermont: Building Intercultural Relationships, Julie Richards May 2015

New Americans' Perspectives On Retention And Adaptation Of Childrearing Practices In Vermont: Building Intercultural Relationships, Julie Richards

All Dissertations

With the prevalence of global migration, many communities are becoming increasingly diverse. However, along with the benefits of diversity, cultural divides can emerge. Members of the dominant culture may not be familiar with, nor understand, cultural practices of the newly arrived community member, and vice versa. This dissertation research sought to identify various cultural childrearing practices as well as New Americans' perspectives on childrearing within Vermont. Barriers and supports for cultural retention and adaptation were identified, along with potential contributions that New Americans can offer their communities in understanding who they are and what they bring to the childrearing experience.

Administrative Relationships, Agency Theory, And The Summer Work Travel Program: 2012-2013, Mark Reardon

All Dissertations

This study discusses the ability of the Summer Work Travel Program (SWTP) to meet the objectives outlined in its authorizing legislation, the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. These goals include educational exchange between participants and the U.S. community, cultural exchange between participants and the U.S. community, and the promotion of peace exemplified by SWTP operators and the U.S. community. The study adopts agency and transaction cost theory to guide its discussion of the administrative relationship between the U.S. State Department and those designated as Summer Work Travel Sponsors. This study's findings include instances of informational and preference …

The Agreeableness Of Conscientiousness: The Effects Of Personality Facets On The Curvilinear Citizenship Behavior And Task Performance Relationship, Stephen Robertson May 2015

The Agreeableness Of Conscientiousness: The Effects Of Personality Facets On The Curvilinear Citizenship Behavior And Task Performance Relationship, Stephen Robertson

All Theses

Recent research has highlighted that the relationship between organizational citizenship behavior and task performance is nonlinear such that the occurrence of task performance behaviors will decrease as more time and resources are devoted to organizational citizenship behaviors. This occurs because of the restrictions of resource allocation theory which posit that employee resources are finite and limited, thus, there will be some tradeoff between engaging in various performance behaviors. The current study examined the potential moderating effect of specific facets of agreeableness, conscientiousness, and their interaction. Results showed that, as employees engaged in more individually focused citizenship behaviors, increasing levels of …

A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, Phill Jones, Andrew Wesolek, David Scherer, Charles Watkinson

Presentations

Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. In this session, you will hear from three successful library publishers who have embraced this external facing aspect of publishing. …

Does Defensive Medicine Reduce Health Care Spending?, Scott Barkowski Feb 2015

Does Defensive Medicine Reduce Health Care Spending?, Scott Barkowski

Publications

The medical community often argues that physician fear of legal liability increases health care spending. Theoretically, though, the effect could be positive or negative, and empirical evidence has supported both cases. Previous empirical work, however, has ignored the fact that physicians face risk from industry oversight groups like state-level medical licensing boards in addition to civil litigation risk. This paper addresses this omission by incorporating previously unused data on punishments by oversight groups against physicians, known as adverse actions, along with malpractice payments data to study state-level health care spending. My analysis suggests that health care spending does not rise …
