Pornography Use And Dating Patterns Among Young Adults, Bonnie Young, Brian Willoughby
Pornography Use And Dating Patterns Among Young Adults, Bonnie Young, Brian Willoughby
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Pornography use is known to be disruptive in relationships by creating unrealistic expectations for intimacy and partner image (Daneback, Træen, &Mansson, 2009; Yucel & Gassanov, 2009). This is significant because as emerging adults are searching for potential marriage partners, dating practices may be negatively influenced by attitudes and practices rooted in pornography exposure. By understanding the relationships between dating and pornography viewing behaviors, we will be able to understand the best way to help individuals struggling to date because of pornography related behaviors and more generally how pornography is generally influencing the dating culture among young adults. This will lead …
Depression, Suicide, And Performance Monitoring: Identifying Neuroelectric Markers Of Suicidal Behavior, Kaylie Carbine, Michael Larson
Depression, Suicide, And Performance Monitoring: Identifying Neuroelectric Markers Of Suicidal Behavior, Kaylie Carbine, Michael Larson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
From 2000-2009, suicide mortality rates increased by 15% (Rockett, et al., 2012) and 98% of individuals who complete suicide have diagnosable psychopathology (Bertolote, Fleischmann, De Leo, & Wasserman, 2003). Individuals at risk for suicide exhibit cognitive impairments in decision-making and problem-solving abilities (Pollock & Williams, 2004; Jollant, et al., 2005). These cognitive deficits may be related to deficits in performance monitoring. Performance monitoring is the ability to continually assess behavior in order to make adjustments and improve performance. Performance monitoring is mediated by the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which is related to cognitive control abilities. Furthermore, suicidal thoughts and behaviors …
Cultural Compromises: Effects And Perceptions Of Formal Education Among The Himba Of Namibia, Jessica Andrus, Greg Thompson
Cultural Compromises: Effects And Perceptions Of Formal Education Among The Himba Of Namibia, Jessica Andrus, Greg Thompson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Himba of Namibia have only recently been introduced to formal education within the past 20 years. Previously, formal education was not as readily available to them. This has led to a major cultural shift among the Himba. Traditionally, the Himba do not count, read, or speak English, but formal education is changing that. Through an ethnographic study in Otutati, Namibia, I found that the reasons the Himba are more positive towards education is because they have found ways to reconcile the traditional culture and formal education, enjoying the benefits of both lifestyles.
Motivating With Media: Early Language And Literacy Skills Through Digital Learning, Kalan Andersen, Barbara Culatta, Phd
Motivating With Media: Early Language And Literacy Skills Through Digital Learning, Kalan Andersen, Barbara Culatta, Phd
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A strong relationship exists between acquiring early literacy skills and attaining proficiency in reading (Catts, 1999, National Reading Panel, 2000). In order to create this connection with young readers, early success can be found through systematically teaching skills and motivating children’s interest in reading. When used appropriately, the digital delivery of early literacy activities may give teachers a practical and cost-effective way to systematically teach skills and engage children in learning (Moses, 2013).
Skill Acquisition In The Identification Of Symptoms Associated With Autism Spectrum Disorders Among Three Pre-Professional Groups, Kristi Hoover, Blake Hansen
Skill Acquisition In The Identification Of Symptoms Associated With Autism Spectrum Disorders Among Three Pre-Professional Groups, Kristi Hoover, Blake Hansen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study was to train three groups of pre-professional students on identification of behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorders. Johnson (2008) emphasized that “an increased awareness of early signs of autism can facilitate surveillance and enable [Professionals] to play a key role in early recognition that, when coupled with earlier access to appropriate interventions, could improve outcomes markedly” (p. 86). The study taught undergraduate students from nursing, early childhood education, and special education how to identify some of these behaviors that are red flags for autism.
The Grovecrest Project: Analyzing Sociable Behavior In Children With Language Impairment Following A Social Understanding Intervention, Maille Coombs, Martin Fujiki
The Grovecrest Project: Analyzing Sociable Behavior In Children With Language Impairment Following A Social Understanding Intervention, Maille Coombs, Martin Fujiki
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The link between social communication and Language Impairment (LI) is an emerging topic in the field of speech pathology. It is known that children with LI struggle to produce and comprehend language, but it has recently been shown that these children also have notable difficulty communicating and interacting appropriately in social situations. A number of recent studies have documented that children with LI have deficits in emotion understanding (Fujiki, Spackman, Brinton & Illig, 2008). Children with LI struggle with affective theory of mind, recognizing and labeling facial expressions, and understanding emotion through prosody changes (Delaunay-el Allam, Guidetti, Chaix & Reilly, …
Strength-Based Assessment For Children With Autism And Related Disabilities In Bosnia, Mckenzie May, Blake Hansen
Strength-Based Assessment For Children With Autism And Related Disabilities In Bosnia, Mckenzie May, Blake Hansen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Bosnia was the center of conflict during the war in Yugoslavia from April 1992 to December 1995. In post-war Bosnia, where there are limited resources, families of children with special needs bare the burden of care on their own. Caring for a child with significant disabilities on a daily basis places immense pressure on Bosnian families (Hastie, 1997). Steiner points out, “For parents of children with autism, identifying positive characteristics of the child and the relationship may be particularly beneficial because the stressors associated with the disability are likely to be chronic, and cannot be easily mastered.” (Steiner, 2010)

Plant Microfossils Recovered From Dental Calculus At Casas Grandes, Mexico, Daniel King, Michael T. Searcy, Kyle Waller
Faculty Publications
Microfossil analysis is a technique used to better understand prehistoric diets. As part of a larger multinational project, we gathered and analyzed 112 samples of dental calculus (fossilized plaque) from human remains discovered at Paquimé and other sites in the Casas Grandes river valley to identify various microfossils still present in the silica matrix. With this information, we are able to better understand the flora present during ancient times and how it was used (food, processing, etc.).

Ilhan, his wife Nura, and their children resided near Kabul, in a region where both the Taliban and ISIS were active. As Shias, Ilhan’s family faced numerous menaces, including threats from ISIS that they would be beheaded if they did not display ISIS flags. Ilhan’s sister Radwa, who is deaf and mute, was forced to marry a regional leader. In addition to being threatened on religious grounds, Ilhan’s family was also threatened by an elder of their town. Out of desperation, Ilhan’s family sold their house appliances, escaped Afghanistan, and arrived at the …
At What Cost? Discrepancies Between Women's Legislative Representation And Effective Policy To Protect Women From Violence In Argentina, Madeline Gannon
At What Cost? Discrepancies Between Women's Legislative Representation And Effective Policy To Protect Women From Violence In Argentina, Madeline Gannon
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
The first country to institute a national-level quota law for the inclusion of female candidates was Argentina in 1991 (Franceschet and Piscopo 2014, 86 ). In a basic sense, "A substantial increase in the number of women in political legislatures is expected to strengthen women's unity and political advocacy, leading to changes in policy content'' (Sacchet 2008, 369). Exactly how the policy content is likely to or ought to change is debated. Both expectation and research has shown that, "Women legislators are more likely than their male colleagues to represent women's interests and to support legislation that is beneficial to …

How Partisan Identification On The Ballot Affects Individuals' Vote Choices, Jennica Petersen, Rebecca Shuel
How Partisan Identification On The Ballot Affects Individuals' Vote Choices, Jennica Petersen, Rebecca Shuel
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
Political parties are both praised and criticized in our society. People acknowledge that parties serve important functions as they organize the electorate, simplify voter choices, and help voters elect leaders that will carry out their desired policies (Dalton, Farrell, and McAllister 2011). However, other people blame political parties for the increasing polarization and gridlock in our government, and some people claim that individuals rely too heavily on partisan cues and not enough on information about political candidates when determining their vote choice. Because political parties perform such important tasks, we expect individuals to vote differently in the absence of party …
Immigrants And Voting: How A Personal Relationship To Immigration Changes The Voting Behaviors Of Americans, Mandi Eatough, Jordan Johnston
Immigrants And Voting: How A Personal Relationship To Immigration Changes The Voting Behaviors Of Americans, Mandi Eatough, Jordan Johnston
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
In the last thirty years the number of immigrant voters, in the U.S. has increased from less than 5 percent of the population to more than 13 percent. With such an unprecedented increase in such a short amount of time, immigration reform has become one of the most significant and controversial issues in elections nationwide. Since the 1980s, the U.S. has faced consistently increasing levels of both legal and illegal immigration, an issue that is personally relevant to all immigrants regardless of legality (Tichenor 1994). This influx of immigrants has made immigration policy more important for politicians. Understanding the attitudes …

The Systematic Stretching And Contracting Of Ideophonic Phonology In Pastaza Quichua, Joseph A. Stanley, Janis B. Nuckolls, Elizabeth Nielsen, Roseanna Hopper
Faculty Publications
This paper analyzes systematic differences between sounds used in ideophones and sounds used in the non-ideophonic or “prosaic” lexicon of the Pastaza Quichua language of Amazonian Ecuador. We compare a digitized corpus of vocabulary items with a list of ideophones identified from field observations. We find that if a sound, syllable structure, or stress pattern is distributionally restricted in Pastaza Quichua, it is likely to be normalized and expanded within ideophones. The overall system is also stretched among ideophones by the addition of new sounds to the obstruents. These expansions are complemented by an overall contraction among sonorant sounds within …
Marginal Models: An Alternative To Mixed-Effects Models In Sociolinguistic Research, David Eddington
Marginal Models: An Alternative To Mixed-Effects Models In Sociolinguistic Research, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
Sociolinguistic studies generally gather multiple instances from a single speaker. This introduces repeated measures that need to be taken into account when carrying out statistical analysis in order for the outcome to be statistically valid. One way of doing this is to apply a mixed-effects model. In the workshop, I present a lesser-known, but equally valid method for dealing with repeated measures—marginal models.
How Inflection Class Systems Work: On The Informativity Of Implicative Structure, Jeffery R. Parker, Andrea D. Sims
How Inflection Class Systems Work: On The Informativity Of Implicative Structure, Jeffery R. Parker, Andrea D. Sims
Faculty Publications
The complexity of an inflection system can be defined as the average extent to which elements in the system inhibit motivated inferences about the realization of lexemes’ paradigm cells. Research shows that systems tend to exhibit relatively low complexity in this sense. However, relatively little work has explored how structural and distributional aspects of the inflectional system produce this outcome. In this paper we use the tools of information theory to do so. We explore a set of nine languages that have robust inflection class systems: Palantla Chinantec, French, Modern Greek, Icelandic, Kadiwéu, Nuer, Russian, Seri, and Võro. The data …

Laboratory Exercise- Mapping The Risk Of Structural Failure In Schools Due To An Earthquake, Joel Barker, Kimberly Sowards, Casey Webb
Engineering Applications of GIS - Laboratory Exercises
Utah’s present geology has been greatly dictated by tectonic stresses that have occurred over the last 0.7 Ga. A determining factor in much of this Geology is the Hingeline that runs through Salt Lake County. Throughout the history of the western North America, this has been an important weak zone. It is no surprise that this same zone is now home to the Wasatch Fault System, which accommodates some of the extension of Western North America. The steep mountains facing west toward Salt Lake City were formed from the tectonic processes of the Fault. The Wasatch Fault is a normal …

Engineering Applications of GIS - Laboratory Exercises
Upon the successful completion of a college degree, many students (and their families) are offered job positions in various locations throughout the Unites States. As a result, these young families are tasked with the challenge of finding a suitable place to live in an area they are completely unfamiliar with. By using a model in ArcMap this task can be made much easier. In this lab a model will be created in ArcGIS Model Builder along with a corresponding map showing suitable locations.

Laboratory Exercise – Determining Evacuation Route For Deer Creek Dam Failure, Eleise Hinton, Matt Randall, Brian Packer
Engineering Applications of GIS - Laboratory Exercises
Deer Creek Reservoir holds a volume of approximately 153,000 acre-ft of water. All of this water is held back by Deer Creek dam. Below the dam, the Provo River flows through Provo Canyon and down into Provo before terminating at Utah Lake. While the chance of a dam break is considered unlikely, an extreme event such as a major earthquake could trigger a break. In the case of a dam break, residents of Provo who live in the flood path will need to know where to evacuate. This exercise will create a model to show the nearest evacuation sites for …

Some major factors in deciding where one’s family should live include relative safety of the neighborhood, available green space such as parks and schools, grocery stores, and other commercial retail in the area. With the legalization of marijuana in states such as Colorado, proximity of these marijuana dispensaries has become another factor. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) can be used as a measure of vegetation, and to determine areas with high levels of irrigated vegetation. Using ArcGIS Modelbuilder, the data from an NDVI analysis can be used to determine the proximity of marijuana shops to these types of greenspaces …
