Library Research Instruction For Doctor Of Ministry Students: Outcomes Of Instruction Provided By A Theological Librarian And By A Program Faculty Member, Charles D. Kamilos, Rodney Birch Jan 2014

Library Research Instruction For Doctor Of Ministry Students: Outcomes Of Instruction Provided By A Theological Librarian And By A Program Faculty Member, Charles D. Kamilos, Rodney Birch

The Christian Librarian

At some seminaries the question of who is more effective teaching library research is an open question. There are two camps of thought: (1) that the program faculty member is more effective in providing library research instruction as he or she is intimately engaged in the subject of the course(s), or 2) that the theological librarian is more effective in providing library research instruction as he or she is more familiar with the scope of resources that are available, as well as how to obtain “hard to get” resources.

Library As Place: Being Human In A Digital World, Amanda C.R. Clark Jan 2014

Library As Place: Being Human In A Digital World, Amanda C.R. Clark

The Christian Librarian

Despite the increasingly digital nature of information retrieval, both users and computers continue to occupy physical space, and the library – as place – offers an essential location for inspiration. In an age when one might assume that the digital negates the physical, a finite place can root the individual within space regarding both composition and information retrieval. In this seeking for the essentially human element of the physical book within space, we may also discover a need for the library as place.

"Doing Good With A Slice Of Pi: Ideas For Using The Raspberry Pi As A Low Cost Information Platform In Libraries", Michael Wells Jan 2014

"Doing Good With A Slice Of Pi: Ideas For Using The Raspberry Pi As A Low Cost Information Platform In Libraries", Michael Wells

The Christian Librarian

In the last decade, librarians have been under pressure to cut costs at every level. These cuts often occur in acquisitions, while other areas such as technology demand fiscal expansion just to meet user demand. In the last few years, University of Cambridge computer science researchers have developed a credit card-sized computer, affectionately known as the Raspberry Pi. Intended to serve as an educational platform for children learning Python programming, the project has far exceeded its original scope. At $35, this small computer can now serve as a creative solution in various areas of librarianship.

Investing In The Student Staff Development Process, Jeremy Mcginniss, Joshua B. Michael Jan 2014

Investing In The Student Staff Development Process, Jeremy Mcginniss, Joshua B. Michael

The Christian Librarian

This paper argues for the need for librarians to invest in the student staff development process, particularly in the context of biblical higher education. The foundational pieces of hiring, training, development and assessment which inform the student staff development process are defined and explored to see how they should fit into the library context. Examples from the library literature coupled with practical experience provide a framework that encompasses theoretical and pragmatic application. This paper narrates how a particular library worked through this process while providing principles from which libraries of varying sizes of collections and staff can benefit.

Navigating The Information Highway: A Multilayered Approach For First-Year Graduate Students, Lana J. Wilson, Ashley N. Chu Jan 2014

Navigating The Information Highway: A Multilayered Approach For First-Year Graduate Students, Lana J. Wilson, Ashley N. Chu

The Christian Librarian

Taylor University’s Zondervan Library developed a multifaceted approach of engagement with graduate students of the Master of Higher Education and Student Development program, utilizing a variety of venues and courses relating to advanced research and writing. Regular assessments provided feedback for improvement within the embedded program structure. A second component of this model involved an archival project, which facilitated student research with primary documents in the university archives. Overall, graduate student understanding and ownership of the research process increased, and teaching faculty noticed improvement in the quality of research-based assignments as well as the program’s thesis project.

The Effect Of Library Orientation On Library Knowledge, Lilli-Anna Baca Jan 2014

The Effect Of Library Orientation On Library Knowledge, Lilli-Anna Baca

The Christian Librarian

Previous research shows that the anxiety of not knowing how to use the library is a major factor in the decline in library attendance. In this study, the hypothesis was that the knowledge and attitude of students who participated in the library orientation would positively increase. A survey was emailed to 150 students of John Brown University (JBU) measuring their pre and post library orientation knowledge and attitudes of the library. The results of the study showed an increase in library knowledge, t (53) = -10.01, p = 0.007, d = 7.33, an increase in confidence in using the library, …

Marketing Stadiums As Event Venues: Modified Balanced Scorecard (Mbsc) Evaluation Of Minor League Baseball Websites As An Emarketing Tool, Charles Parrish, Seungwon "Shawn" Lee, Ji-Ho Kim

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Maximizing and gaining access to stadium related revenue streams, including non-game day social and corporate event rentals, is a critical factor for the financial viability of professional sports teams. Minor League Baseball (MiLB) teams and Independent baseball league (Indy) teams are no exception and franchise owners strive to maximize ancillary business opportunities, including stadium usage year-round. Currently, teams are marketing their venues through various mediums, including their websites. Considering the implications of eMarketing on MiLB and Indy teams’ ability to target and solicit social and corporate event customers it is critical to evaluate current eMarketing efforts. This study employs the …

The Relationship Between Sensation Seeking, Psychopathy, And Deception, Ashley D. Dickey Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Sensation Seeking, Psychopathy, And Deception, Ashley D. Dickey

Modern Psychological Studies

Psychopathy has many implications for society at large. These individuals are likely to commit violent crimes, manifest other antisocial behavior, and make up a large portion of the prison population. This study aims to establish a relationship between sensation seeking, psychopathy, and deception. A sample of 100 undergraduate students enrolled in psychology courses in a southern university completed three questionnaires assessing their level of sensation seeking (SSS-V), deception (MACH-IV), and psychopathy (TriPM). Each of the three distinct phenotypic constructs measured by the TriPM were also correlated with total SSS-V and MACH-IV scores. Pearson and Spearman correlations revealed significant relationships between …

Effects Of Disability Exposure On Implicit Association Test Scores, Jordyn R. Moon Jan 2014

Effects Of Disability Exposure On Implicit Association Test Scores, Jordyn R. Moon

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of exposure to counter-stereotypical information about physical disabilities on implicit attitudes. Ten undergraduate students completed a mental imagery task relating to physical disabilities while the other ten students were given a filler task prior to the measurement of their implicit and explicit attitudes using an Implicit Association Task (IAT). It was hypothesized that both groups would have equally negative implicit attitudes. However, results revealed that the implicit attitudes of participants who completed the counter-stereotypical task showed significantly more negative implicit attitudes than the no imagery group whose attitudes were also …

Who Trusts Twitter? Openness To Ideas As A Predictor Of Trust And Interest In News Of An International Disaster Presented In Twitter And Traditional On-Line Journalism Formats, Emily J. Dunn, Greg Feldman, Alandra Klove, Christine Lowery, Kelly Pelham Jan 2014

Who Trusts Twitter? Openness To Ideas As A Predictor Of Trust And Interest In News Of An International Disaster Presented In Twitter And Traditional On-Line Journalism Formats, Emily J. Dunn, Greg Feldman, Alandra Klove, Christine Lowery, Kelly Pelham

Modern Psychological Studies

Twitter is an increasingly utilized tool for communication during major events including natural disasters; however, there is little research investigating this topic and how individual differences might predict reactions to information in this medium. The current study seeks to understand how the personality trait of openness to ideas predicts perceptions of a Twitter source's trustworthiness and interest relative to a journalistic source. Participants were randomly assigned to read a simulated account of a flood presented either as a Twitter account or a journalistic account and then rated perceptions of the sources. Results indicate that Twitter is trusted less than a …

The Relationship Of Religiosity To Psychopathy: The Predictive Ability Of Religious Orientation For Stress And Depression In College Undergraduates, Robert B. Arrowood, J. Brian Pope, Thomas Harlow Jan 2014

The Relationship Of Religiosity To Psychopathy: The Predictive Ability Of Religious Orientation For Stress And Depression In College Undergraduates, Robert B. Arrowood, J. Brian Pope, Thomas Harlow

Modern Psychological Studies

Evidence supports that different levels of religiosity are related to mental health outcomes. This study examines the relationship between religiosity and measures of psychological maladjustment. The current study compared participants' scores on several measures of religiosity with scores on Locus of Control, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Obsessive-Compulsive tendencies. Multiple regressions analyses were conducted suggesting that Indiscriminate Proreligiousness, a measure of overall religiosity, was found to be negatively correlated with stress. Highly religious people were found to have more of an intrinsic religious orientation than either extrinsic or quest orientation.

A Review Of The Models Of Schizophrenia: And A Putative Novel, More Unified Model, Michael Vogel Bronstein Jan 2014

A Review Of The Models Of Schizophrenia: And A Putative Novel, More Unified Model, Michael Vogel Bronstein

Modern Psychological Studies

Schizophrenia is a debilitating disease state which causes immense pain to sufferers and to their families. Although some proximate causes of symptoms of the disease have been identified, no ultimate cause has been uncovered which can explain all of the symptoms. This paper presents a novel theory of the ultimate cause of some forms of chronic schizophrenia with the potential to explain many (if not all) symptomologies associated with the disease. In addition to its explanatory power, this putative model may also give rise to new early diagnostic tools and treatments for schizophrenia. After the model is fully explained, suggestions …
