Hong Kong Happiness Index 2007 香港快樂指數 2007, Lok Sang Ho

Hong Kong Happiness Index 香港快樂指數調查

A survey on Hong Kong Happiness Index conducted by Lingnan University's Centre for Public Studies (CPPS) shows that Hong Kong people in 2007 are less happy than they were in 2006.

The survey has recorded a 4.8% decrease in the overall happiness index from 70.6 in 2006 to 67.2 in 2007. The declining happiness index goes against the general expectation that happiness index will increase under ongoing economic recovery.

Putting All The Pieces Together: Developing A Cyberinfrastructure At The Georgia State University Library, Doug Goans, Tim Daniels

University Library Faculty Presentations

Like many libraries over the last several years we have been developing or purchasing technologies such as a Content Management System, an Open URL Link Resolver, an Ask a Librarian System, and a Blogging System that not only support internal functions and communications but also deliver current information and access to resources to our user's desktops. As we begin to explore developments for our next generation of services we realized that the most effective way to deploy these web based services was to integrate our technology and staff into a cross-departmental cyberinfrastructure and collection of working groups that allows us …

Art Imitates Life: Violence And The Music Of Metal And Rap, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

The purpose of this presentation is to explore the similar evolution's of Black Metal and Gangsta Rap musical genres. The authors argue the following similarities exist: 1) different cultures and statements being made, but violence is a common thread (outcomes of violence and societal responses), 2) the music and lyrics in both reflect their cultures, histories, and lives, and, 3) there is a strong musical and lyrical expression of violence related to the behavioral expression of violence among the artists and the fans in both genres. Finally, the authors question whether art imitates life or life imitates art.

Open Access And Conscious Selection, Kitti Canepi, Andrea Imre, Harold Way May 2006

Open Access And Conscious Selection, Kitti Canepi, Andrea Imre, Harold Way

Conference Papers and Presentations

Open Access resources (OA) are becoming more important in all types of libraries. Recent discussions on OA have focused on ILS access and availability of MARC records with little attention to a selection process for deciding whether or not to provide access to OA.

The presenters will outline some of the concerns with by-passing conscious selection, show how some services and systems are providing bibliographic access, offer information collected on the availability of finding aids for a group of OA titles, present selection criteria used by some database aggregators that include OA resources, and suggest possible selection process models.

Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

The spread of sophisticated computer packages and the machinery on which to run them has meant that procedures which were previously only available to experienced researchers with access to expensive machines and research students can now be carried out in a few seconds by almost every undergraduate. Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the basis for gaining an understanding of what these analytic procedures do, when they should be used, and what the results provided signify. This comprehensive textbook guides students and researchers through the transition from simple statistics to more complex procedures with accessible language and illustration.

Working With Your Whole Campus To Create An Institutional Repository, Jane Costanza, Beatrice L. Caraway

Library Faculty Research

This session demonstrates various uses of an institutional repository: showcasing student work, archiving images from student theatrical productions, scanning and archiving the student newspaper, and providing campus-wide access to the university s policies, for example. Such projects respond to and shape the changing role of paraprofessionals in the library, but success requires collaboration with other campus units.
