Service Quality Of Mhealth: Development And Validation Of A Hierarchical Model Using Pls, Shahriar Akter, John D'Ambra, Pradeep Ray
Service Quality Of Mhealth: Development And Validation Of A Hierarchical Model Using Pls, Shahriar Akter, John D'Ambra, Pradeep Ray
Shahriar Akter
Advancing research on service quality requires clarifying the theoretical conceptualizations and validating an integrated service quality model. The purpose of this study is to facilitate and elucidate practical issues and decisions related to the development of a hierarchical service quality model in mobile health (mHealth) services research. Conceptually, it extends theory by reframing service quality as a reflective, hierarchical construct and modeling its impact on satisfaction, intention to continue using and quality of life. Empirically, it confirms that PLS path modeling can be used to estimate the parameters of a higher order construct and its association with subsequent consequential latent …

Trajectories Of Family Processes Across The Adolescent Transition In Youth With Spina Bifida, Barbara Jandasek, Grayson Holmbeck, Christian Delucia, Kathy Zebracki, Deborah Friedman
Grayson Holmbeck
The current study investigated change in family processes, including conflict, cohesion, and stress, across the adolescent transition, comparing the developmental trajectories of youth with and without spina bifida. Individual growth curve modeling procedures were utilized to describe the developmental course of family processes across 4 waves of data collection, from ages 9 to 15 years, and to test whether illness status (spina bifida vs. matched comparison group [N=68 for both groups at Time 1]) would significantly predict individual variability in family processes. Potential moderators (child gender, socioeconomic status [SES], and child verbal ability) of the association between illness status and …

The Development Of An Internet Attitudes Scale, Brendan Morse, Nicole Gullekson, Samantha Morris, Paula Popovich
Brendan J. Morse
The popularity of Internet use has generated a need for reliable and valid Internet attitude assessments. Current practices in the development and validation of Internet attitude scales have raised several methodological and practical issues. The purpose of this study was to develop general Internet attitudes measure as well as to explore the psychometric and methodological concerns surrounding the construct validity of existing Internet attitude scales. A three-study sequence was conducted that included the development and refinement of the Attitudes Towards the Internet Scale (ATIS), an investigation of differences between Internet and paper-and-pencil administrations, and differential item and person functioning. The …

Housing First: Documenting The Need For Permanent Supportive Housing (Executive Summary), Susan Burkholder, Kathryn Hexter

Five years ago, very few people would have believed that it was possible to end homelessness for the most marginalized Americans. Today, the idea that we can end the cycle of homelessness and institutionalization for vulnerable Americans is so mainstream that the Bush administration declared in its 2003 budget proposal that it considers “ending chronic homelessness in the next decade a top objective.” The key to this turnaround in thinking is supportive housing, an approach that is both smart and compassionate” according to a recent editorial in the New York Times. It is a concept that is proving to be …

In the fall 2009 semester, the Syracuse University Library launched a pilot program to test two Kindle DX e-book readers as content delivery devices. The pilot objectives included exploring additional options for access to curricular resources that are cost-prohibitive and frequently requested by library users, testing a new technology, i.e., Kindle DX, for delivery of ebooks, gauging user reactions to e-book readers, and using Kindle statistics and user feedback to develop or modify services and technologies. Through the pilot, the Library gained practical experience with a new technology and attempted to determine whether an e-book reader loan program would interest …

Responding To Foreclosures In Cuyahoga County: Program Year Three Evaluation Report, March 1, 2008 Through February 28, 2009, Kathryn Hexter, Molly Schnoke
Kathryn W. Hexter
Cuyahoga County, Ohio is at the epicenter of the foreclosure crisis. With close to 13,000 foreclosure filings a year since 2005, more than 10,000 vacant and derelict structures and thousands of homeowners losing their homes, the effects of the crisis will be long lasting and far reaching. In Ohio, County courts, agencies and departments have some level of authority and responsibility for virtually every step of the foreclosure process. So it is not surprising that the fifteen mayors of the First Suburbs Consortium2 turned to Cuyahoga County to help them address this crisis. In response, in August 2005, the Cuyahoga …

While the current economic climate is challenging, it provides an opportunity to assess critical workforce and talent issues facing the manufacturing community. In March 2009, Dr. Joel Elvery of Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs released the Employment and Wage Trends of Manufacturing Occupations in the Cleveland-Elyria PMSA analysis. The analysis identified occupations that appear to be “pain-points” for employers - or open positions that are hard to fill and thus, in high demand.

Friendships Of Children With Disabilities In The Home Environment, Cheryl Geisthardt, Mary Jane Brotherson, Christine Cook
Friendships Of Children With Disabilities In The Home Environment, Cheryl Geisthardt, Mary Jane Brotherson, Christine Cook
Christine C. Cook
Friendships are a valued aspect of life. Understanding the family and home aspects of friendships can help special educators to develop a broader understanding of issues supporting friendships for young children with disabilities. In this exploratory study, family interviews and home observations were used to examine friendships of children with disabilities (3 to 10 years old) at home. Results suggest many children with disabilities spend limited time with friends or peers in the home environment. In this sample, children with the greatest amount of contact with friends had disabilities that were mainly physical in nature, while children with behavior problems …

Grey Gold: Do Older In-Migrants Benefit Rural Communities?, Nina Glasgow, David Brown
David C. Brown
Older Americans retiring to rural areas quickly integrate in their new communities and bring significant social and intellectual capital to those communities, finds a new issue brief from the Carsey Institute. The brief is among the few studies to consider social rather than economic impacts of older in-migration to rural areas.

Farm To School: Strategies For Urban Health, Combatting Sprawl, And Establishing Community Food Systems, Mark Vallianatos, Robert Gottlieb, Margaret Haase
Mark Vallianatos
Farm-to-school is a new, innovative strategy with multiple planning-related objectives. The article evaluates the significance of farm-to-school in relation to improving the health and nutrition of school-age children, particularly low-income youth; strengthening the capacity of local farmers, particularly those engaged in sustainable practices; adding to the toolkit of strategies designed to contain and ultimately reduce sprawl-inducing developments by helping preserve farmland; and helping establish a community food systems approach no longer entirely dependent on the global food system that has come to dominate food growing, processing, distribution, and consumption patterns around the world.

Responding To Foreclosures In Cuyahoga County 2011 Evaluation Report, Kathryn Hexter, Molly Schnoke
Kathryn W. Hexter
The foreclosure crisis hit Cuyahoga County earlier and harder than the rest of the nation. The crisis continues to weaken the County’s already weak housing market, as evidenced by declining property values, increasing numbers of vacant and abandoned properties and the continuing high rates of foreclosure filings. In 1999, there were 4,900 residential foreclosure filings in Cuyahoga County. That number doubled to about 10,000 by 2005 and peaked in 2007 at close to 14,000. In 2011, the County had just over 11,000 residential foreclosure filings. In total, an estimated 68,000 homes in the County have been “touched” by foreclosure. The …

Policing Identities: Cop Decision Making And The Constitution Of Citizens, Trish Oberweis, Michael Musheno
Michael Musheno
Examines police decision making by focusing on stories from 10 officers & drawing together contemporary thought about identities & police subculture. The inquiry suggests that police decision making is both improvisational & patterned. Cops are moral agents who tag people with identities as they project identities of their own. They engage in raw forms of division or stereotyping, marking some as Others to be feared & themselves as protectors of society, while exercising their coercive powers to punish "the bad." Due, in part, to the many ways that they identify themselves, cops also connect with people as unique individuals, including …

Penal Culture And Hyperincarceration: The Revival Of The Prison, Alex Steel, Chris Cunneen, David Brown, Eileen Baldry, Melanie Schwartz, Mark Brown
David C. Brown
What are the various forces influencing the role of the prison in late modern societies? What changes have there been in penality and use of the prison over the past 40 years that have led to the re-valorization of the prison? Using penal culture as a conceptual and theoretical vehicle, and Australia as a case study, this book analyses international developments in penality and imprisonment. Authored by some of Australia’s leading penal theorists, the book examines the historical and contemporary influences on the use of the prison, with analyses of colonialism, post colonialism, race, and what they term the ‘penal/colonial …

There are a number of professionals in a variety of occupations who make decisions regarding coastal and environmental policy issues. These individuals include those within the coastal resources …
A Client-Based Description Of Reflecting Team-Work In Family Therapy , David Brown
A Client-Based Description Of Reflecting Team-Work In Family Therapy , David Brown
David C. Brown
Though the practice of reflecting team-work has a strong theoretical base there has been little research examining its actual use. What has been written is primarily based on the therapist's and/or supervisor's experience, rather than the client's. This dissertation describes clients' perceptions of two different strategies of reflecting team-work that emerged from interviews conducted and analyzed using a moderately structured ethnographic interview methodology. The primary results suggested that reflecting team-work was helpful in providing clients with different perspectives; that in-room teams should be used sparingly during early therapy; that teams should reflect at least twice in-session; and that a three-person …

Classroom Activities And Off - Task Behavior In Elementary School Children, Karrie Godwin, Ma. Almeda, Megan Petroccia, Ryan Baker, Anna Fisher
Ryan S.J.d. Baker
Maintaining focused attention in the classroom is considered an important factor for successful learning. Loss of instructional time due to off-task behavior is recognized as a significant challenge by both researchers and practitioners. However, there has been little research into the factors contributing to off-task behavior. This paper reports results from the first large-scale study investigating how elementary school children allocate their attention in classroom environments and how patterns of attention allocation change as a function of gender, grade level, and instructional format. The findings indicate that instructional format is related to off-task behavior in elementary school students. These findings …

Acute Effects Of Whole-Body Vibration On Lower Extremity Muscle Performance In Persons With Multiple Sclerosis, Kurt Jackson, Harold Merriman, Paul Vanderburgh, C. Brahler
C. Jayne Brahler
Background and Purpose: Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a relatively new form of exercise training that may influence muscle performance. This study investigated the acute effects of high (26 Hz) and low (2 Hz) frequency WBV on isometric muscle torque of the quadriceps and hamstrings in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Participants and Method: Fifteen individuals (mean age = 54.6 years, SD = 9.6) with MS and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores ranging from 0-6.5 (mean = 4.2, SD = 2.3) participated in this randomized cross-over study. Following baseline measures of isometric quadricep and hamstring torque, subjects were exposed to …
Political Polarization As A Constraint On Corruption: A Cross-National Comparison, David Brown, Michael Touchton, Andrew Whitford
Political Polarization As A Constraint On Corruption: A Cross-National Comparison, David Brown, Michael Touchton, Andrew Whitford
David C. Brown
Efforts to explain corruption have increased dramatically in recent years. The interest stems from the increasing weight economists assign to corruption when explaining economic growth. Much research focuses on how political institutions influence perceptions of corruption. We move this debate in a new direction by addressing a previously ignored dimension: ideological polarization. We contend perceptions of corruption are determined not only by specific institutional features of the political system–such as elements of voting systems, ballot structures, or separation of powers–but by who sits at the controls. We employ panel data from a broad variety of countries to test our theoretical …

In 1998, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland began a program-related initiative to increase the availability, affordability and quality of permanent, affordable housing units for low-income and underserved families and persons in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. The Affordable Housing Initiative will award approximately six million dollars to community organizations over a five-year period. As part of this initiative, the Foundation funded more than 25 grantees to undertake a variety of non-capital projects. The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University was asked to evaluate the overall initiative and the projects of each of the grantees.

Artists' Papers In The George Arents Research Library: Sources For The Study Of Twentieth-Century American Art, Mark Weimer, Donna Cook
Mark F. Weimer
For nearly thirty years the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University has actively acquired primary materials to support research and study in the field of art history including, as outlined in an internal collection development statement of 1961, "the papers of architects, artists, sculptors, industrial designers, cartoonists, photographers, art critics, educators, and the records of professional associations and galleries". Beginning with the gift of the papers of sculptors James Earle Fraser, Laura Gardin Fraser, and Anna Hyatt Huntington in the 1960s, and continuing to the recent acquisition of collections relating to Diego Rivera and Philip Evergood, …
