A Beast In The Pews: The Autopsy Of Jane Doe - A Contextual Analysis, Jeff Salazar Oct 2018

A Beast In The Pews: The Autopsy Of Jane Doe - A Contextual Analysis, Jeff Salazar

Access*: Interdisciplinary Journal of Student Research and Scholarship

Steeped in ritual, The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) walks viewers through the (mediated) processes of a clinical autopsy. Beginning with the cataloguing of biometric information, the autopsy proceeds in three stages: external, internal and organ examinations. What starts as a routine procedure quickly turns into chaotic mania as dead bodies are reanimated, flash floods trap the inhabitants and a dead woman seems to have taken control of the building. Using a psychoanalysis approach, this paper illuminates major connections between the id, ego and superego while also identifying the preconscious, conscious, and unconscious functions of the brain. As expressed through …

Bridging Rhetoric And Pragmatics With Relevance Theory, Brian N. Larson Sep 2018

Bridging Rhetoric And Pragmatics With Relevance Theory, Brian N. Larson

Faculty Scholarship

In this chapter, I bridge rhetoric and pragmatics, both of which concern themselves with language-in-use and meaning-making beyond formal syntax and semantics. Previous efforts to link these fields have failed, but Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory (RT), an approach to experimental pragmatics grounded in cognitive science, offers the bridge. I begin by reviewing Gricean pragmatics and its incompatibility with rhetoric and cognitive science. I then sketch RT, but importantly, I identify revisions to RT that make it a powerful tool for rhetorical analysis, a cognitive pragmatic rhetorical (CPR) theory. CPR theory strengthens RT by clarifying what it means to be …

Law, Metaphor, And The Encrypted Machine, Lex Gill Sep 2018

Law, Metaphor, And The Encrypted Machine, Lex Gill

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The metaphors we use to imagine, describe, and regulate new technologies have profound legal implications. This article offers a critical examination of the metaphors we choose to describe encryption technology and aims to uncover some of the normative and legal implications of those choices. The article begins with a basic technical backgrounder and reviews the main legal and policy problems raised by strong encryption. Then it explores the relationship between metaphor and the law, demonstrating that legal metaphor may be particularly determinative wherever the law seeks to integrate novel technologies into old legal frameworks. The article establishes a loose framework …

Paving The Way For Merleau-Ponty’S Eye And Mind In Organizational Communication Studies, Johan Bodaski Aug 2018

Paving The Way For Merleau-Ponty’S Eye And Mind In Organizational Communication Studies, Johan Bodaski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The body is a sense-based medium that creates and interprets organizations. Bodies create organization. An aesthetic theory of organizational communication reveals the significance of the body to the organization. Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of aesthetics offers a theory of aesthetic organizational communication that is yet to be developed. Merleau-Ponty’s aesthetic essay on painting, Eye and Mind, describes the body as the medium through which painters turn the world into painting. His philosophy of painting builds bridges between aesthetics, the body, and organizational communication.

In chapter one, four theories of organizational communication are described: communication constitutes organization (CCO), text/interpreter, ventriloquism, and …

Establishing Influence And Authority In Ancient Civilizations And Modern Politics: The Rhetoric Of Oracles And The Oracular Maneuvers Of Political Action Committees, Michel C. Lacrue Aug 2018

Establishing Influence And Authority In Ancient Civilizations And Modern Politics: The Rhetoric Of Oracles And The Oracular Maneuvers Of Political Action Committees, Michel C. Lacrue

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While most animals communicate in order to convey environmental information such as danger or where food is located, humans have evolved and developed an articulated language for a myriad of uses, and our language is the basis for how we shape and maintain reality. Language can be used to teach, express an attitude or affiliation to a group, and give us a sense of our state of being, but it can also be used to manipulate a narrative in order to gain power over others. This project argues that Political Action Committees (PACs), and the language that they use in …

The Logical Fallacies In Political Discourse, Zilin Cidre Zhou Aug 2018

The Logical Fallacies In Political Discourse, Zilin Cidre Zhou

Summer Research Program

I examined the use of logical fallacies in political discourse. Logical fallacies are fraudulent tricks people use in their argument to make it sound more credible while what they really do is to fool the audience. Out of more than 300 kinds of fallacies, I focused on 18 common ones by analyzing their use in debates about political issues. During conducting my research, I noted that being aware of my mental state is very important if I want to accurately detect the fallacies. Furthermore, while watching two sides debating, being impartial is as significant as staying calm. I also need …
