The Relationship Of The Wechsler Preschool And Primary Scale Of Intelligence (Wppsi) To The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Duane Reeder

Correlational comparisons were made between the Stanford-Binet, Form L-M, and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence using children enrolled in a Head-Start program. The study was concerned with three hypotheses:

1.The correlations found between the I.Q. scores obtained on the WPPSI full scale, verbal, and performance scales and those obtained on the Stanford-Binet using Head-Start children as subjects would be significant at the .01 level.

2. The correlation between the WPPSI and the Stanford-Binet utilizing Head-Start children would not be significantly different from the correlation reported by Wechsler in the WPPSI manual.

The present study was designed to examine the relationship between Mednick's Remote Associates Test and Pettigrew's Category-Width Test. The sample was made up of 36 educational psychology students enrolled in the Utah State Summer School.

The correlation for males and females was made independently. Although the males showed a higher correlation between the two tests than did the females (males, .296 and females, .058), the correlations were not statistically significant.

An informational source where teachers and teacher-candidates could gain a functional knowledge of contingency management techniques had not been developed. A programed text was written to provide this source. Five teachers and teacher-candidates were exposed to the text for a period of three days. As a result of this exposure, learning gains, significant at the 0.01 level, were found in the students' abilities (a) to write behavioral prescriptions and (b) to write the principles of contingency management when presented with open-ended questions pertaining to these principles.

Previous research investigating the relationship between measured interests and expressed interests have reported correlation coefficients ranging from low negative values to +. 99. The present study was an attempt to discover the characteristics that distinguish those people who can accurately estimate their interests from those who cannot. It was hypothesized that the level of awareness index, as shown by differences between expressed and measured interests, would be higher for people with certain personality or intellectual characteristics or both and lower for people characterized by other personality or intellectual characteristics or both. Two experiments were performed to assess two roles commonly assigned response-produced (feedback) stimuli in learning theories by comparing the behavioral outcomes of these inferred events against a known property of external stimuli. The particular property chosen was transfer of discrimination because of its consistency and generality.

The first experiment was designed to determine whether feedback produced by preceding behavior guides ensuing behavior by facilitating transfer in much the same way as environmentally-produced stimuli. Practice And Transfer On A Varied Choice Psychological Refractory Phase, Victor Bogo

The practice and transfer effects were investigated for the 2–, 4–, and 6– -choice psychological refractory phase (PRP) which was equivalent too low, intermediate and high levels of complexity, respectively. Four subjects (Ss) in each condition were practiced for fifteen ten-minute sessions (days), until all groups leveled off. Two hypotheses are tested: (a) practice effects would be significant; (b) greater transfer would occur from a higher level of complexity. Also, the empirical observation that practice effects would be differential for the three choice groups was tested. The first hypothesis was confirmed. The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The Pacific Railroad ended Mormon geographic isolation and brought economic competition from the States. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Clark Hull (1952) proposed that nonreinforccd trials facilitate distinctive after effects and used this "aftereffect" theory to account for the PREE (the greater resistance to extinction of partially rewarded Ss as compared to continuously rewarded Ss). The theory proposed that stimulus traces of a nonrewarded trial (S^N) persist and are conditioned to the locomotor response (R_i) on trials which are reinforced and preceded by nonreinforced trials. If t he S^N_>R_i association has been established under partial reward conditions, and since S^N occurs during extinction, PREE is predicted.

The present investigation represents an attempt to further explore several parameters of short-term memory as a function of the relevance of appropriateness of the verbal materials utilized. It is the author's contention that due to changing patterns of interests and experiences accompanying chronological aging, certain types of verbal material vary with respect to their relevance for use with aging populations. The Relationship Between Beards And The Self Concept, Walter H. Nelson

This research investigated possible differences between the individual self concepts of bearded and non-bearded college men. Two groups of college men, 50 bearded (B) and 50 non-bearded (NB), were randomly selected, interviewed, and given the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS). Subjects were placed into appropriate categories by judges when they were present during testing times, and by the researcher when they were not. No significant differences in the self concepts existed between groups. These results may reflect what may be expected from other groups or college men.

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport

Rats were trained in 2 S^D-S^Δ discrimination experiments in which the effects of an S^D-postponement contingency during S^Δ and temporal regularity of S^Δ duration were assessed. Experiment I showed that discrimination is markedly facilitated by the presence of an S^D-postponement contingency of either fixed or variable duration. Experiment II showed that variable-duration S^Δ periods in a noncontingent schedule can also greatly enhance formation of an operant discrimination. These effects were attributed to differences in the probability of adventitious reinforcement of S^Δ behavior by S^D events.

Classical Conditioning Of Shock-Elicited Fighting Behavior In Paired Rats, Jerry T. Treadway

The present experiment investigated the effectiveness of two methods of stimuli presentation in classically conditioning shock elicited fighting behavior in paired rats.

The results indicated that fighting responses occurred to the unconditioned stimulus (shock), however, at no time did a fighting response occur to any of the tone-alone test trials.

Therefore, it was concluded from the data in the present study that shock-elicited fighting in paired rats did not appear to be a behavior which could be classically conditioned using either a simultaneous or a random method of stimuli presentation.

The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.
